16 『A Golden Trumpet』

Enri closed her eyes for a few seconds before opening them again, her big brown eyes engulfing him. "A small group of farmers and the village elder went out to check some herbs as the sun was rising and haven't come back."

Jack could hear the shakiness in her voice, even though she was trying to hide it the best she could. "Why were they checking herbs so early in the morning...?" He asked blatantly, though he sounded apathetic, her complexion noticeably became just a little better in health.

"One of them thought they saw a blight developing, the others went to check it out to make sure it wasn't…" Enri glanced aside towards the dirt a several paces away.

Jack frowned visibly as he was given this information. So a group of people had went out to the forest and surrounding area to check the known patches of herbs? While that may not be abnormal, he was sure there was definitely something more going on.

Perhaps there were goblins, or even ogre, nearby. Though what made him curious was that the Village itself seemed rather calm, in the sense that it wasn't being sieged or directly a.s.saulted.

He drew in a deep breath, before releasing it in one go, looking her over. He was hoping to get something out of her, but that didn't seem like it would be the case just yet.

"And the Guards have seen nothing?" He'd ask as he looked towards one of the Honor Guard members which were walking around.

Anika raised a brow as she looked to each member as they were walking about the perimeter of the village main habitation area. All of them could be sighted at least once before disappearing behind other buildings. None of them were missing and they didn't seem all that worried.

Enri shook her head.

"Did you say anything to them?"

"No, I haven't spoken to the guards. I was waiting for you, as I wasn't sure they'd answer me." She raised her big brown eyes to look at him again.

His amethyst hues stared down through her for a few seconds before nodding, "Fair enough." He didn't sound amused, nor happy. Even though he made it sound like he understood, he didn't, considering Teetle hadn't reported disappearing villagers.

Could it have slipped the Overlord's mind? Or had the Overlord a.s.sumed it wasn't important information compared to the other developments? In a sense, it wasn't important, not in the long-term anyways. Jack would cross his arms slightly as he began to think to himself. The Village desperately needed a wall around it, or some form of protection.

It wouldn't take long for them to build a concrete wall around this place. At most it would take a few weeks as long as they could get a hold of the material. He was sure there was plenty of clay and rocks in the area, even water from the lake or the well.

However the one thing they didn't have an abundance of was sand, one of the primary ingredients of making concrete and gla.s.s. However there was also the fact that he could have them make a cement wall, which was even cheaper. Iron or Steel Cement made from the material found in the mineral deposits nearby. All they had to do was eliminate the current inhabitants.

The question was, how large was that wall going to be? If he squared it around the village rather then encircle it, he'd have access to plenty of the forest for expansion. He could also move the entrance to the underground city, into the center of the Village, like a hidden escape hatch.

He remembered that there had been some ancient walled cities which had underground pa.s.sage ways for the inhabitants to hide while the city itself was being sieged. Though once their entrances were found, they were essentially trapped.

Oddly enough, seeing the pondering face of the man in front of her, Enri seemed to smile a bit more. She was under the belief he was thinking about the situation at hand, not the long-term solutions.

Reaching into his item box, he would take out what looked like a trumpet.

Enri who's eyes immediately widened, was shocked by the revelation that he had pulled an instrument out of thin air. He hadn't even tried to hide his use of might be perceived as spatial magic.

"This is a magic item that will summon monsters to your aid, they can help you protect the village or even help you with the daily tasks and ch.o.r.es."

Blinking several times looking at the gold casted trumpet, she wasn't quite sure what to say. Though she was curious, what kind of monsters was he referring to? There were many in this world, and not all of them were known to her.

"It's called the Trumpet of the Kobold Dragon King." Essentially this item summoned forth small humanoid lizard people related to that of Dragons. Just like dragons, their scales came in various hues. They were about as tall as Goblins, and probably just as mischievous. Due to the name of the trumpet, it could be a.s.sumed that the Kobolds which were summoned through this trumpet, were winged.

Enri stared at the item for a few moments, a.s.suming the relation to the Dragons, she would take the thing into her hands.

"They will look to you as their leader and will follow your commands. Use them wisely." Jack would state before looking off towards the direction of the herbs the men had probably gone off towards.

Sniffing the air, he could smell a coppery scent, blood. However it was faint, hardly there. Could they have been killed and dragged off? Or had then been drawn into the woodlands and gotten lost?

Enri held the trumpet in both hands before holding the mouthpiece to her lips, turning it to the eastern sky and blew. A loud and unruly sound blasted from its bell end.

In the second that the trumpet vanished from her hands upon its first and only use, seven beings appeared. Each one having a different color set of scales. One green, one blue, one white, one brown, one black, one pink and one red. All of them had bat-shaped wings and a crocodile-like snout.

They wore black hooded tunics with silver scale mail overtop, at their hips were sheathed weapons.

Based on their appearance, Jack could a.s.sume they were over level thirty and at most fifty.

"Hm?" They all looked around as little bulbs of light floated through the air, fading into the sky above. Their eyes then s.h.i.+fted towards Enri and almost immediately knelt before her.

"Our Queen Mother!" The Kobolds shouted as they were all now in a semi-circle around the fair maiden.

Enri and Nemu, along with the rest of the Villagers present, stared at the monsters that had been brought into this world from what seemed to be nothing and nowhere.

"What are your orders, Queen Mother!?" They'd look up to her with their green s.h.i.+ning reptilian eyes, they were ready to serve without any information. Though it was clear, they were eying everyone and everything, outlining friend and foe.

The shortest of the group was two feet, and glanced up towards Jack who was standing close to the woman. Immediately they snapped their attention back to Enri when Jack made eye contact.

"Enri… Call me Enri," she didn't like the strange t.i.tle of Queen Mother.

"Yes Enri-dono!" They immediately switched to using honorifics with her newly learned name attached.

Enri stared down at the reptiles as their wings flexed. Her eyes darting to Jack for a split second before looking to the miniature Dragonoids. "Please, be at rest and stand for me."

The Kobolds all looked at one another before looking to her, curious of what she had in store for them. They stood as they were told, standing on their two feet.

The way they stood was elegant and powerful, reflecting that of a Dragon's pride and dignity. They were pint sized knights and thanks to being summoned by the trumpet, were loyal to a fault.

"What are your orders?" Jack smirked asking this question with a slightly antagonistic tone, trying to push her into action. He knew what she wanted, but they didn't.

Enri blinked at his tone, looking at him for a split moment wit h her lips parted. Then she returned her gaze to the dragons who were looking up at her with a glint of light in their eyes. "Villagers have disappeared from the village earlier today to the East. I want you all to find out where they are, and report back here with news of them."

"To the east..." The Kobolds looked around before all turning their heads in the direction of the scent Jack had picked up moments ago. "Smells of blood… Faint. Not a lot." They were all making the same observation, taking turns saying words or even finis.h.i.+ng each other's sentences.
