12 『Her Life Debt』

It gave him a more lax atmosphere despite the severity of the situation, especially as the elder supplied them with two cups of murky water from the well outside.

"To cut to the chase..." Jack uttered as he went to change the subject from the casual banter regarding the state of the village and the damages which covered the Villages of this region. "The Slane Theocracy has been asked to eliminate you," blatant and straight to the truth, Jack didn't bother sugarcoating it. "By your own n.o.bility."

"So… The Slane Theocracy is targeting me…?" The Head Warrior wasn't surprised by the news, regarding the n.o.bility of this Kingdom. They were truly corrupt. However to try and eliminate him because of his position, he found it despicable. "And they resorted to this?" He gestured with one hand towards the Villagers and the house they stood in.

Bringing his hand back to gasp the cup in both hands, he looked at the murky water. He was somewhat used to the cleaner water of the Capital. Yet he had seen many battles, and a lot of dirty water. It wasn't much different from what he used to drink as a Commoner.

A faint sight left his lips.

Jack tugged a smile across his own lips as he looked out towards the plains that were dotted with trees and some subtly wavy hills.

"What your people, your leaders, will sacrifice to get to you..." Jack shook his head slightly, "It is a pity that you serve such a Kingdom."

His hollowed eyes gazed upon Jack, as he saw the truth in his words. However he was not only bound by oath, but by the friends.h.i.+p he held with the King. The only reason he stood by the man was because of his resolve to change the Kingdom and that was enough for him.

"It has its moments, Graham-dono."

"Please, call me Jack," The Mirage couldn't help but lean against the wall by the window, looking at the warrior. He was a strong looking individual. With all that muscle, one would a.s.sume he could do so much more damage. Yet, he wasn't even at a memorable level, despite being considered the strongest.

"...Jack-dono," the Head Warrior nodded at the familiarity considering what was going to transpire. Though he was coming to believe that this man before him could take on even the strongest of what the Theocracy had to throw at him. "I would like to ask you, to hire you, for a job."

Jack's jaw rolled slightly at this.

"I don't have anything on me, but I may be able to give something you want. I am the friend of the King," He informed the dragon who was just looking over him for a moment before shaking his head.

"You can't give me what I want, because you nor does your King have it." Jack didn't snap at him, or give him a darkened voice or tone of malice. Instead he just spoke the truth with a casual tone. His eyes going back to wandering along the fields still as he did so just prior.

Hearing this man decline his offer, he became curious of what he wanted. A dragon who had been sealed beneath the ground for over a hundred years, believed he had nothing he wanted?

"What is it you want...?"

"Do you know of a Sylph with short black hair, pale peach toned skin and dark green eyes?"

The Head Warrior stared at him when he asked of a person with very specific traits. "Sylph?"

"Its a type of Wind Elemental, she has sigils lining her abdomen and shoulders." He was describing Lala's avatar for the most part. He was curious if she was around, and if she was, this man might just know.

For a brief moment, there was silence before he shook his head. "No," The Head warrior let out a dreaded sigh as he went to look outside along with Jack. "My Apologies, Jack-dono."

"No need, Gazef-dono..." He uttered as he too remained looking outside.

"Would you be willing to fight for me, against these b.a.s.t.a.r.ds?" The Head Warrior seemed to smile with hope at this, though a serious look was clearly in his eyes.

"..." Jack rolled his shoulder and pushed himself off the wall as he rested the cup flatly on the windowsill. He turned his head to look towards the villagers who were mostly huddled together.

If the Head Warrior fails to win a battle against the Theocracy, and Jack shows his back to these people, everyone here is dead. There was no ignoring that outcome, which was likely due to the elite troop surrounding the village. There was no escape without running through them.

"If you cannot defeat them, then I will step in on your behalf, otherwise this Village and your King will suffer." Jack compromised with what he wanted to do, at the same time offering something Gazef had to work for.

Gazef nodded slowly, taking in a deep breath before exhaling sharply. "You are a hard one to bargain with, Jack-dono."

He offered him just about anything he could, though it was mostly money on the table. It was his habit to save money, to not squander it. Yet this man asked for a person that he couldn't produce. He was sure he had nothing this Dragon wanted. This was the only option and he was sure it was the best choice left to take. Otherwise he would have to turn tail and run, leaving these villagers behind to be ma.s.sacred by the Theocracy and he wasn't about to just let that happen!

"The Theocracy is watching..." Jack huffed as he looked to the sky above as it was getting darker and stars becoming more prominent behind the weakly formed clouds that were moving in.

"Hm..." Gazef scratched his chin, stroking his facial hair, in thought. "I could have my men break through their lines and back to E-Rantel while I fight them one on one."

"That's quite the self-confidence..." Jack commented as he stared at the Head Warrior, as he knew he himself could handle all these pipsqueaks, but he highly doubted Gazef could do it on his own.

Even if he was super skilled, it seemed unlikely he'd win.

The Head Warrior laughed lightly as the Dragon didn't seem to have that much confidence in him. In truth, he knew he couldn't handle all of them. He just knew he'd take down plenty of them with him, if not the monsters that they've summoned.

Jack looked back out the window towards the direction of the Special Operations group outside the Village called the Sunlit Scripture. They seemed to be employing ArchAngel Flames, monsters from YGGDRASIL. They were weak compared to Jack or any of his NPCs, but they were a challenge for an average human to take care of due to being third tier summons.

"Then I will see you on the battlefield, Jack-dono," The Head Warrior, he was rather content with not having to kneel down before him. Though he seemed to have felt like Jack would feel the same.

"Aye..." Jack watched as Gazef made his way out of the building to return to his men and relay his orders. Once the Head Warrior was gone, he turned his gaze towards Enri who began to walk up to him.

Enri stopped right in front of him, a smile plainly set upon her lips. There was a light tinge of red on her cheeks, she was blus.h.i.+ng, she seemed anxious. "Are you not going to fight with the Head Warrior?"

Jack initially said nothing as he stared at the faint dimples by the corners of her smiling lips. They were cute. His gaze subtly traveled below her collar briefly, before moving back up to her face.

"I will join him on the plains should it seem that he is losing," his eyes remained on her as he didn't make much more of an expression, as for the time being, he didn't have an emotional response.

"Ah..." Enri's smile lessened slightly hearing this, rubbing her arm with her left hand, her fingers scratching against her skin covered by the st.i.tched orange right sleeve of her dress.

Jack's eyes flickered to Nemu for a second, who was watching them with her lips parted in a muted smile, then back towards Enri. "Are you worried about something? Or is there something else on your mind?"

If this was a confession, he'd want to outright reject it. At the same time, accept it. He didn't understand though how she could fall for him, if she even did in the first place.

His hand would reach forward, lightly fixing the b.u.t.ton on the collar of her dress. If this situation was different, he might actually have tried to unb.u.t.ton the rest of her dress.

This caused her to flinch slightly from the sudden movement, believing he was going to take her chin into his hand. Her face had turned even redder at the very idea of his touch.

Pursing his lips at her reaction, he let his hand fall down to his side. "So?"

She tensed slightly when he spoke up again, she had never felt this nervous in her life! It was just because of this… Dragon right? She was saved by him, he risked himself to save her and her sister.

She had never courted anyone. She had never dated anyone. She always had the single status.

Had it been a risk? Or had it been a calculation? She didn't think of these, she already set her mind on the former a.s.sumption.

"I… I don't know… It's just..." Enri swallowed shallowly, she'd flex the collar of her dress trying to take it from the surface of her neck, feeling an itch from her nerves. "You saved my life, and my sisters life. I'd do anything to save my sister… And not only that, but you gave me an expensive potion without even knowing who I am! I want to be able to repay you for your generosity."

Jack generally found that the potions couldn't be refined with the Gold from YGGDRASIL anymore. So technically his potions were rare now and irreplaceable, making them expensive.

Though he was pretty sure she thought it was expensive because he said it was advanced, while it was really a Lesser Healing Potion. A small smiled poked across his lips.

"Then let us call it... a Life Debt," Jack called upon the belief that a victim who is saved, owes their savior forever. Or in another case, when someone is saved by someone, they become the other person's servant forever.

"L-life debt?" She had an inkling of what he meant.

"You will be mine, if or until I relinquish you of your service to me."

Enri bit her lower lip as it was exactly what she thought. He wanted her as a servant, or a slave, in some manner of speaking. Though at the same time, he could claim the entire Village due to saving all of their lives even. "I see," she still had a hint of a smile across her lips as she nodded, "Life Debt."

In a way, she wanted to accept this in order to protect her sister and the Village. She could only a.s.sume that he'd continue to protect her life thanks to the debt, which would mean in turn, he'd protect those around her. At least, that is what she hoped.

Jack's gaze lingered towards Nemu, then back towards Enri. "Good," a mischievous grin appeared across his lips, the tip of his tongue briefly poking out. "We'll talk after everything is resolved..."

Enri nodded as she clasped her hands together, a half-smile across her lips as she watched him with a weak gaze as he walked out the door. The battle could be heard raging from the fields, the Horses charging through the Sunlit Scripture to retreat to E-Rantel and the Head Warrior fighting on foot after losing his mount.

Soon enough, everything was met by a brief silence. The Warrior Troop had retreated, Gazef was alone on the field. By far, it was clear who would be the losing party.
