5 The Flash Back 5

"start with bad news first," Walker said with a feign confidence.

"Okay, the results of the MRI show that's your spinal cord got injured after that last play of the game and because of that injury, and one of the nerves in your back got damaged. and the nerve that got damaged is the one how has a direct connection between your lower back and your brain so that damage cut the link between your brain and your legs" the doctor explains.

"I didn't understand, will you give me a simple explanation"Walker was confused with all the medical terms.

the doctor saw that Walker was confused, then he realizes that he used terms that wouldn't be easy to understand.

"sorry I got carried away for a second," said the doctor.

"mmm..."Walker noded with nervousness in his eyes.

"so to put simply, you wouldn't be able to use your legs anymore," said the doctor.

Walker when he heard that he wouldn't be able to use his legs again, he sensed that his life started to get dimmer.

the doctor saw that Walker was in a daze he sighed, then he said "Don't lose hope already the good news is that you would have surgery on your back to decompress the pressure from the spinal cord and if you are lucky you could get back on your legs once more " the doctor said.

walker's eyes brightened when he heard that there was a possibility to get back on his leg.

"if my legs got healed is there is a chance for me to play basketball again," said Walker with antic.i.p.ation.

"If you could walk normally after the injury that already good enough, as for playing a sport it's far fetched, " said the doctor.

"I would be back after a while to talk to your mother, about the surgery" add the doctor and then he walked out of the room.

Walker was in deep thought, he knows what the doc said was similar to a sentence to his goal that he was unwilling to part away with his dream.

After a while, he calms down and adjust his thoughts and decided to focus on the situation he is in. Then hope that he will get back on his legs, even if he will not get to play basketball anymore at least he wouldn't be a burden to his mother. Then he starts thinking of an easy way to tell his mother about the surgery.

Meanwhile in the ward of the hospital.

"Doctor, wait for a second," Sophia said.

he doctor turn his head and saw Sopfia calling him.

"I want to ask you about the results of the MRI that Walker took, " said Sophia with distress in her face.

"Mrs. Hamilton I was looking for you, let's go to my office and talk," the doctor said.

"ok, let's go," said Sophia.

IN THE DOC's OFFICE

Sophia was shocked by the news of the possibility of her son being in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

"What is the success rate of this surgery and what are the chances for him to be able to live like a normal person," said Sophia her eyes start to get moist.

"the surgery is a most here to help him live normal even with a wheelchair, and if we don't do the surgery quickly the injury just going to be more complicated. As for the ability to walk again is up to his will power and luck.and because he was an athlete there is more chance for him to recover," explained the doctor.

"do the surgery and what happens next is up to fate," said Sophia with a pained expression.

"Okay, the surgery will be done in a few hours, be strong your son didn't want me to deliver the news to you because he was afraid that it will be too much for you to handle, " said the doctor.

"so I give him a little bit of confidence considering the surgery because the rehab is going to be hard for him so he should be optimistic for the results, so don't talk to much detail with him," adviced the doctor.

"Okay I will take my leave now," said Sophia.

she walked out of the doctor office and went to the restroom to wash her face because she didn't want her son to see her like this the least she could do is help him raise his morale.

after was.h.i.+ng her face and controlling her emotion she entre and saw Walker was asleep she sits next to him and starts brus.h.i.+ng his hair.

Walker was not asleep but was just pretending because he didn't know how to break the news to his mom .and when she starts stroking his hair he felt the affection of his mother, he was guilty of making her go through this.

"The doctor was here, and he stated that I would need an operation to complete my recovery there is nothing to worried about," Walker opened his eyes and told her.

Sophia heard her son trying to sugar coat his words.because he was worried that she wouldn't be able to handle the news.

" I know the doctor told me about it, it's not going to be hard, so don't worry about it, "said Sophia with a rea.s.suring look.

"Don't you worry, I wouldn't fall that easy," said Walker while holding his thumbs up.

"I know My son is the best out there," Said Sophia lovingly while stroking his head.

"is the surgery fee expensive," asked Walker.

"silly child think about your health first money isn't that important, the school has coverage for their players, so the cost of the surgery is already paid in advance, so don't worry with that," said Sophia with a smile.

Walker started gaping after he was a.s.sured that his mother wasn't worried.

"Get some rest your surgery is after a few hours, " said Sophia.

Walker noded and start to fall asleep.

After a Few Hours.

"Are you ready Walker? Don't be nervous, everything going to be okay," said the doctor.

Walker noded with confidence written all over his face.

after getting ready, they moved walker to the operation room.

Sophia waited for outside, and uneasiness was written all over her face.

Inside the operation room when the doctor saw the nerve that got damaged he face change.

"this surgery will take between 6 to 7 hours so everyone should be focused." said the doctor

the a.s.sistant was baffled for a minute and asked: " wasn't just a 1st-degree spine injury it took two and a half hours normally?"

"That because what was shown in the MRI scan and what is in front of me are different the nerve is more damaged than what was shown in the MRI this is a 3rd-degree spine injury, he should be fortunate if he could stand up on his legs once again and it may not be enough," said the doctor.

The surgery continues, outside the surgical room, Sophia was getting more anxious by the hour.

wasn't this supposed to be two and a half hours, it's been four hours, could it be that something happened to Walker" thought Sophia.

"what am I thinking I should be positive my son will be ok," Sophia started to rea.s.sure her self.

After 2 hours the door of the operation room opened.

Sophia runs towards the doctor to ask him about her son.

"How's Walker," said Sophia.

"the operation is a success, but the damage that his nerve receive was critical Now he wouldn't feel any problem, but he was unfortunate because the degree of damage was more than what was expected, so the chances for him to stand up again is slim, " said the doctor to Sophia directly.

She was shocked by the answer "The chances are slim, are you saying that he is going to be on a wheelchair for the rest of his life" said Sophia.

" More likely but he should start the rehab programme, It would be good for him even if the chances are slim there is no need to lose hope, " said the doctor.

"although it's better to find a way to tell him.because if he couldn't stand on his leg or have any developments in three months after rehab. You should tell him the truth," added the doctor

"I... will...think ....about it," said Sophia sobbing

Sophia chooses not to tell him first, and if there were no improvements, then she is going to tell him the truth.

The days pa.s.s by, and it was 2 month since the surgery it was hard and exhausting for Walker, but he never gave up.

Today was the day for the evolution he does every end of the month.

Sophia was nervous because she knows that this month will be a deciding factor for the future of her son.
