18 Ambush

As they were mostly low ranking Deca.n.u.s soldiers they weren't given guns and had to scrounge for their own weapons. They were armored with an a.s.sortment of old revolvers, single action shotguns, and varmint rifles as well as throwing spears and fire axes.

Their squad was one of dozens that went out to patrol every day. Their mission was to keep a look out for any NCR spies and to loot and kill anyone they see and even take slaves if possible. Today they were patrolling the area south east of the camp. It was considered one of the safer routes as it was in Legion controlled territory. But, that didn't mean they slacked off.

Their backs were straight and they marched in perfect formation through the desert. They would stop at designated points and take out binoculars to scan the area before moving on. The Centurion in charge of their camp had warned them to pay extra attention on their route.

News had just come in that Vulpis Inculta had been killed in Nipton by a strange Courier.

This came as a shock to them as Vulpis Inculta wasn't just any ordinary Legionare he was the man in charge of the frumentarii. The frumentarii were one of the Legions most important a.s.sets. They were Caesar's spies and intelligence in the Mojave, and there wasn't a single thing the NCR did that would escape their ears.

So it went without question that Vulpis Inculta the man in charge of frumentarii was one of the highest ranking soldiers in the Legion. His death would cause chaos in the frumentarii and disrupt the Legions information network, something that was unacceptable to Caesar.

As soon as Vulpis's death was confirmed and the perpetrators identified. Kill on sight orders were given. Their targets were a dark haired young man who was the Courier in question traveling with an attractive woman and a small robot.

The squad continued their patrol as normal seeing nothing of interest in the desert beside the occasional gecko or coyote. They stopped at their next surveillance point and started taking a ten minute lunch after scouting the area.

They ate their rations in silence as one of their members stood on watch.

"Zip" a bullet flew out from nowhere and lodged itself in the lookouts head.

The Legionaries reacted instantly diving the ground as another bullet whizzed by striking another Legionare.

The three remaining members of the squad started returning fire in the direction the shots seemed to come from. But, their bullets were limited and they still hadn't spotted their enemy.

In the end they had no choice but, to charge they could stay or they'd eventually get picked off and they couldn't retreat either. They knew what wound be waiting for them back at camp if they couldn't even identify who was attacking them.

There was no mercy for failures in the Legion. They would rather die trying to defeat their unseen enemies than return home in shame.

They rushed forward and instantly another member went down.

One of the Legionares took a stick of dynamite out of his pack and prepared to throw it. But, it was struck by a bullet first and exploded in his hand.

The last Legionares gun jammed and he threw it to the ground and took out an axe. The last thing he saw while blindly running towards the gunfire was the shadow small robot floating in the distance.

"Zip" a silenced bullet flew straight through his eye and he died.

In the distance I wiped the sweat from my brow.

"Well that went better than expected" Ca.s.s joked while wiping the dust from her clothes.

I laughed and agreed.

Early in the morning ED-D detected five targets moving in a regular pattern. We knew it must have been the Legion.

We spent the next couple hours using ED-D to track their positions while staying far enough away to avoid being seen. Eventually we were able to predict their path and get ahead of them. Then we found a good spot to hide and waited. We even ended up getting lucky when they stopped for their lunch.

Ever since I reached 100 Guns I could remember missing a shot but, now that I had an amazing gun with a decent scope. It felt like my shooting had reached a completely different level.

I didn't use VATS once during the entire ambush. Not even when I sniped the dynamite from the guy's hand.

I stood up from ground and put Ratslayer away. It was time to go loot their corpses.

"d.a.m.n" Ca.s.s cursed when she saw their bodies "every single one's a head shot!"

"I don't know what your so surprised about, you saw what I did in Nipton."

"That was different" she shook her head. "They were less than a hundred feet away and you used explosives to kill half of them. But, this" she gestured to the bodies "was insane. We were easily a thousand feet from them and you took each of them out with a single in under ten seconds. I'm pretty sure that even the best NCR Rangers can even come close to matching that."

"Yep, I'm awesome" I made a goofy smile and put my hands on my hips.

She facepalmed "I get the feeling I'm going to regret saying all that."

"Oh, I'll make sure of it" I joke and lightly punched her shoulder. "Now come on their not going to loot themselves."

After searching the we found out they didn't have much on them. And we only ended up taking their food and water, some ammo, and a couple denarius and denarii (Gold and Silver coins that the Legion used instead of caps). It made sense they didn't have that much on them since they were basically just grunt soldiers.

As for their weapons they were all stuff we already had and the extra weight was worth the caps we'd get from selling them. So put everything in a pile and used the dynamite they were carrying to blow it all up. Because we didn't want to leave anything the Legion could use.

Once we were done we retreated to a safe distance and set up camp. We were going to stay the night to ambush who ever was sent to look for this squad.

We weren't worried about being attacked because ED-D was always on guard. The moment he sensed anyone in the area he would wake us up and we'd pack up camp and get into position.
