17 Ratslayer

"There's something inside here that I need" I told her. "You can keep watch while I'm inside so we don't get ambushed by the Legion."

"Fine, whatever" she rolled her eyes "just do whatever it is your doing so we can get out of here. Being so close to a Legion Camp is freaking me out."

I said nothing and entered the cave once again thankful for my night vision.

It's been five days since we left Nipton and not much has happened. Other than when we were attacked by a gang called the Vipers on the second day. They might've been dangerous if the all charged us at once but, they chose to try a hid on top of the hills and take pot shots at us. Unlucky for them I was a much better shot then they were and the retreated once I started taking them out.

After that we followed the road for another two day I told Ca.s.s we were changing course east into Legion territory. She was against it at first but, angrily followed we once she was sure I wasn't going to chang my mind.

Another day of traveling and we were finally back on flat terrain whet ED-D's sensors would work again. And we were easily able to avoid Legion patrols and move around their camp to Brock Flower Cave.

My anger at the Legion hadn't lessened since we left Nipton if anything it got worse. And I was dead set on taking out the Legion Camp a couple miles from here.

Unfortunately after a bit of scouting on ED-D's part we found out there were at least 300 Legion soldiers at the camp. So I wouldn't be able to go in guns blazing. I wasn't sure I'd be able to do something like that even if I was level 50.

So my only option was gorilla warfare, and to do that I needed the Ratslayer.

The Ratslayer was easily one of the best early game weapons in Fallout New Vegas. It is a fully modified Varmint Rifle with 3.5x night vision scope, an extended magazine that can hold up to 8 bullets, and the option I was most interested in a silencer.

I wanted to be able to take out a squad of Legionnaires before they could even tell they were under attack.

That gun combined with having 100 in Guns and ED-D's sensors would make me their worst nightmare! But, of course I had to actually get the gun first.

I drew the .357 Revolver that I replaced my old 10mm Pistol with and was ready to clear the cave.

The enemies inside weren't particularly difficult there were just a lot of them. There were molerats and RUS(Rodents of Unusual Size) everywhere.

I took this as an opportunity to try and test out a new combat style I thought of.

I would activate VATS but, not actually selected any targets. I would use it to identify all of the nearby enemies and while time was stopped plan out my next move. With the extra time I had to think the second I released VATS my arm would move in the most efficient way to aim at my target. And once I fire I would stop time again and repeat the process.

It was a bit tedious but, I was mowing through them like it was nothing. It honestly felt like I was cheating.

The only time I actually used VATS was when I was out of bullets and didn't think I would have time to reload the normal way. If you select a target in VATS but, your gun is out of bullets the you'll spend a couple more AP and reload your gun in VATS in half the normal time.

It only took ten minutes to clear the cave and reach the room where Ratslayer was held. It was on a ledge overlooking the largest room in the cave. Apparently someone was camping here trying to get rid of all the rats. I don't know what happened here or if they were still alive because there was no body.

The Ratslayer itself was lying on a table. It had a black aluminum frame as opposed to a normal Varmint Rifles wood one. And had a picture of a rat skull on the stock next to 69 tally marks one for each rat it's killed.

I dropped my old Varmint Rifle the one Sunny gave me all the way back in Goodsprings aside, and slung my new gun over my shoulder.

After I left the cave Ca.s.s tried to punch me in the face. Apparently she didn't like the fact that we came all the way out here for a single gun. And she only calmed down once I explained my plan to her and why I needed a gun with a silencer.

"That has got to be the stupidest plan I have ever heard" she repeated for the thousandth time as we were setting up our camp for the night.

"And yet your still going along with it" I mocked her.

"Yeah! Because I promised to join your stupid little group and I'm a woman of my word! Besides if I left and you ended up dying that be one more thing I'd have on my conscience."

"Tsundere" ED-D beeped.

I burst out laughing "You tell her buddy!"

Ca.s.s grabbed me by the collar "What did he say!"

"N-nothing important" I waved her off while still giggling.

She growled at me then let go and shot a glare at ED-D "just wait until I get the hang of that stupid norse code stuff, you stupid hunk of junk!"

We went to bed not much later after a large helping of fresh molerat.

As dangerous as the next couple of days would probably be I couldn't help but, look forward to it. Not just because I wanted to stick it to the Legion but, because I was finally getting the hang of this world. Don't get me wrong it still sucked but, It didn't feel like I was at the mercy of the world anymore. I was taking things into my own hands.

I turned in my sleeping bag to look at the city of New Vegas in the distance.

When you live in a world full bright lights and skysc.r.a.pers you tend to forget how beautiful all that stuff is. Now after living here for as long as I had. I could really understand while everyone was willing to put their lives on the line to get a piece of that city.

I sighed my thoughts were begging to get away from me. I rolled back over and closed my eyes to sleep. Because tomorrow was probably going to be a long day.
