2 Chapter 2 - Run And Run Again

Eventually, the boar was just about to touch his tail, Zaro spun around as his back legs sprung back and he shot towards a bush. While he was running out of options, he decided to hide as it was the most rational choice even though he was still just delaying the inevitable.

The boar stopped the second he lost sight of Zaro and began smelling the ground for traces of him. Seeing this large and aggressive looking animal, he couldn't help but hold his breath as the boar's tusks became closer to him.

Time pa.s.sed and it seemed like the boar was unable to find him even though he thoroughly sniffed out the entire bush which the little pup was sitting in. The boar began screeching as it furiously rampaged through the forest eager to find its enemy away from Zaro's sight.

In his previous life, he was a henchman working under an extremely dangerous mob boss and his task was to infiltrate buildings and collect intel. In fact, he was so good at it that he was labeled as 'Ghost'. Unfortunately, he managed to get caught exiting a enemies headquarters which resulted in him escaping into another world altogether.

The boar running away furiously didn't surprise Zaro as much as it should've and it wouldn't be a lie if Zaro actually expected that to happen. That is when he realized that upon entering this world he managed to obtain an ability which could hide him from plain sight, although he couldn't avoid the boar by running, he easily lost it by just sitting in place silently.

After thinking about the matter, he decided to keep hunting for those gems which appeared on animal's heads and also because he was now a wolf, he needed his own hunting territory which was away from other wolves. Thus he began traveling through the forest looking for some more prey. He was getting more and more engaged in his wolf attire!

He eventually approached a bright green rabbit which was chewing on some plants and walked up extremely cautiously from the front. His theory was true as the rabbit couldn't detect his presence whatsoever!

Due to his own curiosity, he walked up as close as he could to realize what his limits were and surprisingly he managed to stay an inch away from the rabbit's head!

This was simply amazing, the rabbit couldn't detect his presence at all but could notice leaves bending as he walked through them. The rabbit glanced once more before returning to eating, only to have its head dismembered by Zaro's fangs.

This rabbit oddly didn't have a gem on its head but rather a spherical crystal wedged inside its torso which was in a slightly red color. Thinking back, the boar had a green color gem but this one was a light shade of red and it seemed considerably stronger.

Without Hesitation, Zaro quickly tore out the core and swallowed it whole! Just like the one before, this gem tasted equally as good! However, this time his body seemed to grow even stronger and his back legs seemed much more powerful?

He guessed this had to do with the rabbit's trait of being exceptionally agile on its hind legs. Suddenly, amidst the dense green forest, Zaro sensed another creature nearby and it was staring directly at him!

With fear of being attacked, Zaro spun around to face the enemy but soon he realized that it wasn't just one creature but at least seven or eight!

"Well, well, well... look what we have here... a pup lost in the wilderness!" A dark grey wolf emerged from behind a tree as it released a strong murderous intent at Zaro. It's hide had stands of green hair sticking out around its neck and its eyes were a striking lime green color.

"Oh? It seemed to have caught a Spirited Forest Rabbit too! Aren't we lucky?" Suddenly more and more wolves emerged and surrounded Zaro in an organized fas.h.i.+on. These wolves were equally as threatening as the alpha and released a comparable killing intent.

"Hey pup, give us a reason not to tear you to shreds." The alpha asked with a hint of bloodthirst lingering in his eyes.

Without hesitation, Zaro immediately said, "I'll give you this rabbit I caught!"

The wolf eyed the rabbit and then looked back at Zaro, "This rabbit is worthless... the core has been removed? Why would I need it?"

"I'll catch you something else! I swear!" After saying this all of the other wolves began to chuckle and then eventually the alpha wolf began laughing along with them.

"A pup like you won't be even able to survive much longer... you know what? I'll let you run for a bit and if I can't detect you anymore... I'll let you live! But if you don't make it out in time... let's not mention such things."

Although he knew the wolf wanted him dead, he still felt as if there was some truth behind those words and thus without delaying the situation any further, he fled once again.

Zaro felt slightly enraged because he ended up running again after finding some food! "I have already died once, next time I'm going to attack whatever comes at me! I'm done with running!"

With his heart boiling with rage, he had begun hunting once again regardless of the dangers attached to it. With his ability to merge with his surroundings and become invisible, Zaro kept running into those 'Spirited Forest Rabbits' and other medium-sized boars and since he was no longer hungry, he focused on just eating the cores.

Time had pa.s.sed and night had fallen, Zaro was now much stronger than he was before! He had probably consumed up to fifteen cores and felt a large amount of strength surging around his body as if he was going to explode due to the power!

Even though he kept eating the cores, he couldn't help but feel tired after constantly pouncing and clawing his prey. He guessed that he probably could have continued hunting throughout the night but decided to rest. Since he had a camouflaging ability, he could sleep wherever he wished!

Before he slept, Zaro began deciphering the rules of this world. The strong governed everything as they claimed hunting grounds and controlled the fate of others due to their greater strength. Since he was a wolf, he naturally had an advantage due to being higher up on the food chain but still suffered as he was extremely weak compared to other wolves.

All animals seemed to have these gems which appeared either on their head or inside their chest and the alpha wolf referred to them as "Cores". Once these cores were eaten, you received a bunch of power which flowed around your body and could only be explained as some sort of an essence.

Zaro knew that if he were to grow in power, he would need a lot more cores but in order to get more, he would need his own hunting grounds because hunting randomly in the forest brought a huge amount of risk with it regardless of the prize.

Zaro vowed to get stronger and stop running away, so, with a goal in mind, Zaro shortly fell asleep as he was gathering energy to govern his own share in the forest.
