108 Father Figure

"Hey, Sean," Matt asked his younger brother as he lit his cigarette.

"What's up?" Sean replied whilst juggling a football.

"Why do you always ask me to come play in this park with you?"

"Hmm. Because it's fun. Isn't it?"

"I mean, you're the only one who ever does anything. I just sit around watching." Matt said under his breath.

"Plus, I enjoy talking to you."

Sean and his brother Matt were as close as brothers could be. The two were almost opposites, but this could be down to the way they were raised. Matt was raised with his dad who abandoned them when Sean was born and had to grow up to look after him whilst his mum worked. Whereas Sean, he grew up with the support from his mother and brother who would do anything for him.

"Was there anything you wanted to talk about?" Matt asked.

"Hmmm, well, mum did tell me to try and get you to stop smoking."

"Ha, like that'll happen."

The two of them sat in the cold filed as the sun set early. The wind blew around Sean's hair but it wasn't enough to stop him from kicking the ball around.

'Why do I feel like he wanted to talk to me?' Matt thought as the cold wind continued to pick up.

"How is school? Enjoying Sixth Form?" Matt asked.

"It's alright. Seems fine so far. From what my teachers are saying it gets a lot harder."

"Welcome to life. It ain't easy from here on."

Sean looked over to Matt started lighting his next cigarette.

"You seem surprisingly relaxed these days?" Sean said

"How strange of you to be observant? But I guess that is true. I'm hoping to get promoted soon."

"Wow, congrats. Are you at work tomorrow?" Sean asked.

"Yup. All-day tomorrow just like today. Such is life."

"Wow." Sean was amazed at his brother who he looked up to for his whole life. The two of them both lived their lives for one another. Sean wanted to succeed to make Matt happy and Matt wanted Sean to be proud of him.

"I'm going out tomorrow," Sean said.

"Oh? With Owen and Ethan?"

"No, with Lily."

"Lily, huh?" Matt said getting more and more interested in his brother's private life.

"Is this your lady friend? A girl who is a friend perhaps?"

"What are you talking about. We are just friends. She's a nice girl but we don't see each other that way."

"Aw, boooooooo. Mum is waiting for us to get married. She wants grandkids already."

"Isn't that up to you?" Sean said kicking the ball into Matt's hands.

"Well, it's not always easy meeting girls outside of school."

"Really? Are you sure you aren't just socially awkward?"

"What was that?" Matt said kicking the ball back only for Sean to start juggling it again.

"Haha. Do it again!" Sean kicked the ball back and the two of them kicked it back and forth for a few minutes before their mother called them for dinner.

"Seems like we have to go back," Sean said.

"Yup, let's go."

The two of them walked back, although it was a short distance Matt insisted that Sean go back on his own.

"I'll be back in a bit. Just going to finish this cigarette."

"Oh, alright." Sean ran back leaving Matt alone in the damp air.

"I was against this, but since mum insisted I couldn't go against her," Matt said to a figure that stood behind him. "G.o.d, I hate how much Sean looks like you. I wish he took after his mother more."

"Good to see you, Matt." His father said standing closely in front of him.

"You saw him, so now you can leave. Right?" Matt said.

"Yes. I shall never see you two again. The divorce is finalised. Although I do wish I could speak to him.

"You didn't want him. Sean has no father. Don't forget that." Matt said clenching his fists.

"Calm down. I love Sean just as much as everyone else."

"Don't f.u.c.k with me," Matt said grabbing his dad by the collar. "You don't love him. If you loved him you would have stayed. You wouldn't have hit us. You would know all about his life. But you don't and you never will. No get out of my face."

Matt released his father who fell backwards but quickly corrected his collar.

"You grew into a fine man, Matt. As did Sean."

"f.u.c.k off," Matt said as his cigarette burnt out. "Stay out of our lives."

Back at home, Sean played in his room just like usual. Matt and his mum sat in the kitchen, helping finish dinner.

"Did you see him?" his mother asked.

"Yeah, I was this close to hitting him."

"Well, he knows he can't do anything anymore. If he comes near us we will take him to court."

"We can't afford that," Matt whispered to himself.

"Oh, who cares." His mum said hitting him. "We are fine how we are. I've got two amazing sons and hopefully some grandchildren soon."

"Maybe not from me… but Sean…"

"HA!" his mother let out a sharp laugh. "As if! Now call your brother. Dinner is ready."

This family was just like this. They will always love each other and never forget about one another. The future was what kept them going. The thought of grandkids kept the mother working at 100% all the time. It was hopefully something she would be able to witness before she pa.s.sed.
