199 How They Came To Be Part 1

Year 7. The start of Secondary School life. Not even 2 weeks in. For Owen, Sean and Ethan, this was a strange time. The three of them were separated, as was everyone else. At the start of the year, no one knows each other. They all stayed by themselves and didn't interact in hopes that they would naturally make friends.

"Alright, Cla.s.s." The teacher spoke. "As you are all aware the trip is this weekend. Make sure you have everything on the list I've handed out as this will be an important event that you'll never forget."

At opposite ends of the cla.s.s, Ethan and Owen both with their heads in their hands doubted the words the teacher said. Unsure of what she was referring to when she said 'event you'll never forget'.

"The groups will be announced this week, so make sure you all know who you are with." the teacher continued.

"H-hey…" Ethan said approaching a dead-eye looking Owen who refused to lift his head fulling and waited for Ethan to go away.

"Sniff… sniff." Ethan began crying as he was ignored. "alright…"

Owen watched as Ethan walked away crying, wondering what was going on and confused as to who approached him. He looked at him as he crushed his head with his bag to drown out his tears so he wouldn't bother anyone.

"H-hey…" The following day Ethan tried again. Only to be met with the same fate. "Sniff… O-ok…"

He walked away back to his desk but this time part of the cla.s.s was looking at him. The cla.s.s laughed to themselves and all pointed whilst both of them had no idea what was going on around them.

"Hey, are you ok?" Sean went and asked the crying Ethan.

"Y-yeah…" Ethan looks up and notices the boy in front of him and recognises him as they were in the same cla.s.s.

"You're Ethan, Right?" Sean said with a smile across his face. "I'm Sean, nice to meet you!"

Sean held his hand out to which Ethan cautiously accepted. After asking Ethan what happened he didn't say anything but pointed to Owen who was s.p.a.cing out with his head on the desk.

"Right!" Sean said determinedly. "I'll go do something!"

Sean ran up as fast as he could dragging Ethan over his desk and in front of Owen.

"Owen!" Sean screamed causing him to focus as someone said his name. "What did you do to Ethan?"

Owen looked at the crying child next to Sean and just learnt his name for the first time in two weeks they've been there for. Owen continues to stare without saying anything and shrugs his shoulders.

"Are you mute?" Sean said dumbfoundedly.

"No!" Owen retaliated. "I can speak!"

Owen's shouted alerted the cla.s.s to his presence, the invisibility cloak that he spent two weeks building was gone in a second. All Sean could do was burst out laughing whilst Ethan awkwardly chuckled next to him.

"Now go away," Owen said, stopping them from laughing as they walked away.

The following day was the same. Ethan approached Owen and started crying. Sean would go up and help but get shot down again. Eventually, Owen gave in and let Ethan talk.

"So as I was saying…" It was his biggest regret as Ethan didn't stop talking. "So back to my great aunt's cat's second sister…"

Owen face-planted for the whole day and somehow said less than when he was alone.

"ALRIGHT EVERYONE!" The teacher screamed in excitement one morning. "WE HAVE THE GROUPS!"

She went around reading off all the groups for the upcoming trip. It was a weekend trip in the middle of a forest. The students, and some teachers, camped out for one night and would return the next day. They would do several activities like a talent show, tree climbing, kayaking. All with the idea of building a bond.

"GROUP A!" The teacher started reading off 3 or 4 kids that were in groups together. The teacher started with A but Owen was eagerly waiting to hear his own name.

"And finally, Group J: Owen, Ethan and Sean."

Owen looked behind him after hearing his group to see Ethan with a dorky look on his face, holding up his thumbs at how happy he was to be with his friend. He looked over to Sean who was doing the same. They both had smiles that Owen would describe as torturous.
