Caitlin's Guardian Angel Part 66

And, though he hated to admit it, Iick.

They had gotten lucky.

Now, if only it lasted.

T.

"Show time," he announced, approaching Caitlin.

Caitlin tore off the middle copy from the charge plate receipt and handed it to the white-haired woman who'd sought Graham's silent fashion advice.

The woman's eyes flickered over Graham.

Caitlin had seen that same look before.

Women always looked at Graham that way, though he seemed completely

oblivious to the fact.

The older woman had a wistful smile on her thin lips.

Dreams were free, CaitUn thought, amused, as she turned toward Graham .

Except when you had to pay for them, she reminded herself.

She had dreamed of happiness with Graham once.

When it hadn't happened, the pain had been almost too much to bear.

"Show time?"

Caitlin echoed.

She couldn't begin to guess what he was talking about.

"Is that some sort of high-tech police jargon?"

The woman at the register was lingering, taking an inordinately long

time to tuck her charge plate into her wallet.

"You're a policeman. Her cornflower blue eyes widened in admiration." You know, there've been these wild, - 1) noisy parties in my neighborhood latelyCaithn expected Graham to

briskly brush the woman off.

She was surprised when he gave her a tolerant smile.

Surprised and pleased.

She looked lively, he thought, and in need of something to feed her

obvious zest for life.

"Why don't you knock on the door?" he suggested.

"And ask if you can join in?"

Her eyes fairly glowed at the prospect.

She grinned and Caitlin was struck by how pretty the woman still was.

And how lovely she must have once been.

"Thanks, maybe I will."

With that, she walked out, holding her package to her and humming.

"Well."

Caitlin turned from the doorway to look at Graham.

"You certainly brightened up her day. Now, exactly what did you mean by 'show time'?"

The slight curve of his mouth vanished and he looked serious again.

Caitlin felt a chill of anticipation creep over her on thin, spiked

heels.

This had to do with the killer.

Graham looked around.

There were only two other customers in the store.

There was no reason for Caitlin to have to put this off.

No reason except the fear of looking at her would-be killer again.

Compassion filled him, along with the impossible wish that she didn't

have to be subjected to this.

"Do you feel up to going down to the precinct and trying to pick the suspect out of a lineup?"

She couldn't believe it.

"They found the guy? So fast?"

He nodded.

"Sometimes fate and the police department work in strange ways."

"Apparently."

Something within her hesitated.

She'd have to look at the killer.

See those ice blue eyes that were filled with hatred and death.

Caitlin licked her lips.

They felt dry.

"Sure."

She took a deep breath.

"Why not? The sooner this man goes behind bars, the sooner I'll be able to get my life back."

Exactly what he was thinking.

The sooner this was wrapped up, the sooner she could return to her world, and he to his.

Worlds that had very little to do with each other.

"Just give me a minute."

She moved behind the .

counter and picked up her purse.

"Bankers' hours, Cait?"

Kerry asked, joining her.

"Gray says they've got the guy I, saw in the alley in custody."

Why was her heart'hammering like this?

She was going down to the police station.

Nothing could hurt her there.

And Gray would be with her.
