Episode 40 – Capital of [Country of Industry] – Night

“Kaoru, wait”

Rachel called out to my name. Around us is the hustling and busy entertainment district at night, but her voice is echoing strangely clearly.

“What?”

I looked back at her and answered with cigarette pressed between my lips.

“This building. What kind of s.h.i.+p is this?”

“……I wonder?”

I finished my after meal puff and then threw out the shortened tobacco.

“……”

The building that Rachel pointed out is quite the mysterious one. All other buildings in the surrounding are suspicious looking shops that have their entrance facing toward the street, but only this building is showing its outer wall instead. The entrance door is nowhere to be seen.

“……”

I walked closer toward the mysterious building with mysterious s.p.a.ce. There is only one thing on the building outer wall, a completely empty square hole. After approaching close enough, I found out that there are stairs that go below toward a bas.e.m.e.nt entrance.

“……I think, it's a shop?”

I answered while voicing a doubt myself.

“I wonder if you're supposed to enter this building from that underground entrance”

“Maybe, but it also have another entrance at the other side doesn't it?”

Both of us are throwing our guess about this building's strange structure.

“……It sure is strange”

I muttered while trying to look at the stairs that leads to the bas.e.m.e.nt.

And then I noticed a bra.s.s plate embedded in the wall beside the staircase about 30cm high from the ground.

“What's this……?

Rachel also noticed it too.

I bent my knee to take a closer look at the plate. There's some of this world's letter together with the word『 BAR 』stamped on it.

“It's narrow……”

I could hear Rachel muttering behind me. The stairs going to the bas.e.m.e.nt are narrow and steep, it's impossible for 2 people to walk side by side in here.

“Yeah, indeed”

The stairs are finally over, I looked behind me while staying silent and stretched my right hand.

Rachel muttered after she saw my right hand.

With a lady-like manner, Rachel grasped my extended hand.

“You're welcome”

And then together with the -ton- -ton- sound on the stair, Rachel came down with a smile on her face.

I opened the heavy door of the 『 BAR 』, then inside the dark underground, light overflows and spread around me.

“Where will you sit?”

His voice can be heard clearly even from this distance.

“Is anywhere fine?”

I asked that to the onii-san. The inside of this 『 BAR 』is unexpectedly wide, but there are no other customers right now.

“Do as you like”

He said that while slightly loosening his tie with his right hand. This person is probably the master of this 『 BAR 』.

“Over there then”

I choose a round table near the wall that is facing toward the counter located in the right side.

I've been listening carefully since I arrived to this place, there's music of this world flowing at volume that won't disturb people's conversation.

Rachel sat quickly and called out to me with a small voice.

“What's wrong?”

I also sat on the chair and asked her while seated face to face, somehow she looks happy.

“It's my first time in this kind of shop”

I nodded and smiled a little. Everyone has their own first time right.

“This shop is a little strange isn't it”

“Is it?”

Rachel's had her eyes wide open and she's looking around the shop with a curious look. I wonder how to say this, apart from one thing, this shop is actually pretty normal.

When she heard my words, Rachel turned her eyes toward the other side of the shop. There's a small, really small, stage set up in there.

The master came to pick up the order. The sole of his shoes might be made of wood, it created a nice, crisps -tap- -tap- sounds every time he walks.

The master asked while acting in bad manner, he's resting his b.u.t.t on the table next to us.

“I like wine”

Rachel has choose to drink alcohol.

“I'm…… weak with alcohol, I'll have something that won't make a fool of myself”

I said that flatly.

“Kuku……, What was that”

The master laughed without opening his mouth, it sounds like he's chuckling by using the back of his throat.

“You, age?”

“24”

I answered the master's question quickly. Because it's a fact, I can answer it immediately.

“Sure doesn't look like one”

The master also responded to me quickly. Well, I guess I can see where that coming.

“There are some circ.u.mstances. I was rejuvenated by 6 or 7 years younger”

After that, while still acting nonchalantly, master walked away and returned to the counter.

Master put our drinks and also a menu on the table.

Rachel thanked him, received the menu, and looked over it. Meanwhile, I took the gla.s.s that is filled with amber colored liquor and sipped on it little by little.

My drink was just as I ordered, it seems to be a quite dense liquor that is diluted with water. I sipped more of it and tasted the feeling of alcohol thoroughly.

And then I turned my face toward the side and said that. My cute girlfriend is currently mulling over her choices and stares very hard at the menu.

Master said so while tapping the menu book against his shoulder from above.

He also added a very un-manager-like remark to his answer.

And then he said so while turning his eyes toward the entrance.

It's just as the master said. The shop's door opened and a drunk looking old man came through it.

Master greeted the old man with his low calm voice. One came, huh, that's a strange way of saying it. It feels as if master had been expecting the old man.

I nodded in agreement to Rachel's comment.

Rachel tried to peek at my face while also playing with my hair by twirling it around.

I left Rachel to her own device and continue to speak uncaringly.  I wasn't trying to grow my hair or anything, I just let it grow unattended and I don't have any attachment to it either.

“Don't. Kaoru have a suspicious atmosphere with this long hair, it suits you”

Rachel lifted her gla.s.s and tried to reconcile with me with a toast.

“So, what are we toasting for?”

Rachel then asked that to me. Do we really need a reason to do a toast?

That was Rachel's yell. She had become considerably drunk already.

While listening to Rachel's voice on the side, I start to look around shop's inside.

Master stayed behind the counter, he's having conversation with someone that looks like a regular. Ah, he's also drinking too, I wonder if that's alright.

More than half of the table seats were all filled, but most of them are located away from us. Those seats are the one that face the counter on the left, and also closer to the stage.

The seats around us, one that is located on the side of the wall opposite of the stage don't seem to be popular at all. There are hardly any people in here.

The only one in here is the drunk man from before who is sitting alone at the table seat next to us. This ojii-san sometimes laughed by himself, but the way he's laughing is somewhat disgusting.

In response to Rachel's question, I ordered my third gla.s.s of liquor.

While sipping the alcohol, I continue to talk about useless topic with my cute girlfriend. I love moments like this. It might be a minor thing, however this minor thing is a very important time to me.

While sipping the drink in my gla.s.s, I turned my attention toward the stage.

The other customers stood up while carrying their gla.s.s, and then they approached the stage one after another. It seems to be quite the popular event.

Not long after, a woman and a man appeared from the side of the stage. The other customers applauded grandly, and so we obviously clapped too.

I nodded to Rachel's remark. The onii-san is carrying musical instrument that is shaped like a guitar and gently sit down in the chair on top of the stage. If I'm not wrong, that pear-shaped instrument is called a lute.

Meanwhile, the onee-san moved toward the front of the stage, and after the audience cheered, she waved her hand in response. After the onii-san saw that, he held his instrument closer to his chest.

The inside of the shop instantly becomes quiet, and then the onii-san began to play the lute solemnly.

Together with the nostalgic lute sound, the onee-san starts to sing softly. I don't know about the song at all, however her singing voice is echoing strongly and beautifully inside the shop.

This onee-san is a good singer. I cannot explain the reason, but the moment I heard her singing voice, I immediately thought so. With bated breath, I take a better look at the singer onee-san.

While being overwhelmed with fear, I desperately tried to endure tears leaking from my eyes. My surrounding is clad in pure white and I couldn't see anything at all, however I know that there's something huge right in front of me.

An annoying -jiii- -jiii- sound is ringing inside my ears and my head is also hurting right now.

This existence called G.o.d is truly a cruel one. It trifles with human destiny without caring about the other side's circ.u.mstances at all.

Even though I was cowering in fear, an image of something still appeared in my pure white field of vision. This must be the G.o.ddess of Darkness' message. There's no way I can understand what It is thinking, so while enduring the pain in my head, I focused my attention on my eyes.

It's a room where the interior is made with plenty of wood. Both the wall and flooring are made of hard wooden board, and the room had a warm atmosphere. It was such a room that made me feel like I had seen it somewhere before.

However I refrained. I want to organize my thoughts regarding the message from the G.o.ddess of Darkness. There are too many information in my mind right now.

Rachel hesitated. I guess she wants to talk with the onee-san, but she also wants to stay together with me.

She looks somewhat dissatisfied with it.

I lay down my body next to Rachel while still being hugged. I could care less about bath or whatever right now, I'm far too sleepy already.

After I heard Rachel's sleepy voice, a quiet breathing sound followed. I think I heard something else too, but I already closed my eyes and let my consciousness sink into the darkness.

With my waning consciousness, I said my good night to Rachel. Her body is soft and warm. And so, while being enveloped in the sense of security from two people being together, I feel into a deep slumber.

That day, Yuela and Kerebryl didn't returned until morning.
