21 Book 2 Chapter 17

A man wearing casual clothes walked through the front entrance. The linen clothing threatened to rip apart from his compact steel muscles. Most striking was his chiseled jaw. His brown eyes swept through the first floor of the restaurant.

"c.o.c.kroach, up here!" Roy's voice came from the second floor. Jason glanced up, finding Roy waving him over while hanging over the balcony.

With a twitch of his eyebrow, Jason made his way over to the stairs while greeting his fellow guild mates as he pa.s.sed them. When he arrived on the second floor, he found Roy pointing to an empty seat across from him.

Peter, the guild master of Skyfall, called out. "Jason, we already ordered your favorite meal. Come, come, come!"

Jason smiled as he made his way over and sat down. "Thanks, bro. Sorry I'm late. I had to go to the barber."

As Jason dug into his meal, Roy slapped the table as Peter roared with laughter. "You are so obsessed with your looks."

"He goes once a day." Roy shook his head. "This pretty boy loves keeping up appearances."

"Hmph." Jason rubbed his jawline with a charming smile. "If you had this face, you would understand."

The ascender on Jason's left suddenly wrapped her arms around his shoulder. If compared with other women, she would undoubtedly be the most beautiful one in the world. Her hair was ill.u.s.trious and seemed to glow with light, while her face was something out of a fairytale. "Big brother c.o.c.kroach, won't you date me?""

Jason snorted and pushed the woman away. "Who would date you, you pervert!"

The woman pouted before suddenly transforming into a thin black man. "Ah, how did you know?"

Roy shook his head. "Andy, you need to transform in moderation. Moderation! Anybody could figure out your illusions if they're too perfect!"

Everyone at the table nodded repeatedly. "Right, right!"

Andy clenched his hands as he complained. "Alister, that schmuck, said the same thing. n.o.body understands my vision!"

Peter whistled at Andy. "d.a.m.n, you got b.a.l.l.s to call your G.o.d names."

Andy snorted. "He's the real pervert, not me!"

"Doubtful." Jason retorted.

Everyone at the table burst into laughter. They were all familiar with one another, and as such ragged on each other any chance they got. Their bonds were forged through life and death battles, through victory and loss.

After multiple meals, Jason glanced around the table, focusing on each person for several moments. Waves of pain and sadness flashed through his eyes. Roy noticed this and asked. "What's wrong, Jason?"

Jason shook his head with a sigh. He gathered his resolve and stood up. "It was nice to see you all again, but I must go."

Roy was confused. "Go where? We are your family. Where else do you want to go?"

"Ashes to ashes, dust to dust." Jason raised his hand and clenched tightly. A wave of battle energy flew out from his body, cutting everything to pieces. Before Jason's very eyes, the entire world suddenly cracked before shattering into pieces. In the next moment, he found himself standing in the middle of a foggy world. In front of him was a blue portal.

A screen appeared before him.

As you have already unlocked the Willpower stat, you have instead gained +5 Willpower.

With a wave of his hand, the screen disappeared. Jason stepped forward, unwilling to look back. He was afraid that if he did, he would be stuck in this illusion forever. When he arrived on the other side of the portal, he found Cheslov not far away. "Yo."

"That was fast." Cheslov glanced over and commented.

"Mm." Jason moved away from the portal and sat down on a boulder. Ten minutes later, Jason received a message from Olivia. "I- I failed."

Jason was surprised. He knew that Olivia's will was one of the best. If she failed, what exactly did she fear? Although impolite, he asked. "What did you see?"

Olivia didn't respond for a moment. Jason added. "The illusion targets what you fear most. You don't have to explain if you don't want to."

"What I fear most, huh?" Olivia sighed. "It was my father. I- I couldn't face him."

Her father? Jason had already felt in the past that he didn't quite know Olivia as well as he thought he did. It was even more so now. A moment later, Jason responded. "Do you know what you have to do to complete the floor?"

"Yes… but I don't know if I can do it. I'm sorry I disappointed you." Olivia ended the call.

Jason stood up and prepared to run over to the thirty-ninth floor, but a notification stopped him in his tracks.

Humanity has been upgraded from a Tier 2 to a Tier 3 Trial Taker. Changes will now occur. Many previously locked mechanisms and rewards have been unlocked. To adjust to this transition, take caution.

Roy appeared before the portal, grinning from ear to ear. He hopped over to Jason and exclaimed. "Jason, guess what?! I just got accepted as Piety's champion. Isn't that amazing!?"

Jason was unresponsive. Only when Roy waved his hand in front of Jason's face did he react. Jason's face was grim. "Why is this happening?"

Roy tilted his head in confusion. "Huh?"

Cheslov arrived next to Jason and waved his hand, sending his notification over to Roy. As Roy read through it, his jaw fell. "What does this mean?"

Jason covered his face with his hand. No, what is this? Why is this? What is going on? The first major divergence from Jason's alternate past had occurred. He had never seen this message before. Tier two? Tier three? What did they mean?

A new notification appeared in front of Jason.

G.o.d Aros' is summoning you.

Accept / Decline

Before Cheslov's eyes, Jason suddenly disappeared. He turned to Roy. "Where'd he go?"

"Uh, he's fine." Roy raised his hand. "I'll be right back."

In the next moment, Cheslov was alone. He scratched his head. "Strange things happen around this Jason fella."
