5 Sorrow And Scree

Through a floating, circular shaped rift in s.p.a.ce itself, Sorrow could see a dozen or so people in cloaks, dancing frantically around a horrible looking statue.

The statue depicted a large, featureless, human shaped being, adorned with iron shackles. Its naked androgynous form desperately reaching for the sky as its body melted and fused against the ground, like a wax figure placed upon a hot surface.

One of the figures then began to speak, "behold, the visage of Sorrow, our beautiful G.o.ddess of-!"

"That's slander!" Sorrow screamed in frustration, the rift immediately vanis.h.i.+ng in response, "in what way do I look like that!?"

Indeed, the statue was apparently meant to be a depiction of herself, painstakingly made in secret by some her more 'eccentric' followers, ironically, all in the hopes of gaining her favour.

Her followers always made things like this for her.

"Haa..." she sighed bitterly, hanging her head in her hands as she did so.

She had been feeling stressed ever since her encounter with Crystal.

Then, a moment silence later, another voice spoke.

"Why so glum, sugarplum?" The teasing tomboyish voice of a young woman asked casually, "you've been acting odd ever since you returned from earth."

"I'm fine, Scree" Sorrow stated standoffishly as she lifted her head to see the owner of the voice,"I'm the G.o.ddess of sorrow... of course I'm glum."

Floating mid air, directly in front of her, was the transparent image of a roughly seventeen year old girl. She had short messy hair, pointed ears, and a long thin tail with an arrowhead shaped tip.

As clothing she wore nothing more than a light looking t-s.h.i.+rt, and a loose fitting pare of silk pants.

Her appearance was not only transparent, but completely white as well, giving no hint towards the colour of her body or apparel.

The ghost-like ent.i.ty seemed to casually rest atop the air itself, legs crossed and back seemingly supported, as if she were laying atop a reclined chair.

Sorrow then continued speaking. A futile attempt to change the subject. "So, um, how is Crystal doing, did her soul take to her new body properly, any issues?"

Just as Scree could not see the events prior to Crystal becoming her chosen, as she lacked the power to do so, Sorrow could not see anything which was unrelated to herself, or the forces she governed over. Thus both had missing knowledge regarding Crystal.

Unfortunately, for Sorrow at least, Scree's response was less then helpful.

"I don't talk to liars," Scree replied so with a wry smile on her face.

"I-I'm not lying to-," Sorrow began, however the index finger of Scree, who now had abandoned her reclined posture, was suddenly pressed against her lips, silencing her.

"If you don't want to tell me something, that's fine," she said calmly, the wry smile suddenly gone, "but don't lie to me."

There was a moment of silence in which Sorrow was stunned by Scree's sudden s.h.i.+ft in demeanor. After which, somewhat reluctantly, Sorrow began to speak.

"Crystal... was really, really, scared of me... despite how hard I was trying to not be scary," she muttered, as she looked downwards timidly.

"Ah..." voiced Scree, having understood the situation from just that one sentence.

Scree knew the truth about Sorrow after all, that despite her appearance, name, and status as an evil G.o.d, Sorrow was actually a genuinely nice person. She was awkward and bad at suppressing her natural instincts, but she always had the best of intentions.

The only reason that Sorrow's realm was full of scary looking things, was due to the fact that they were the only things ever offered to her... and she could never bring herself to throw away a gift that was earnestly made just for her... regardless of it's appearance.

Sorrow continued, "I said the wolves were cute and she leapt away from me. I told her I wasn't the grim reaper, and she started stuttering from fear. I tried to calm her nerves by suggesting that she'd already be dead regardless of whether or not she accepted our offer... but she just thought I was threatening her. I tried to act cute by catching and licking her tear, but it somehow made everything even worse... *sniffle, I- I just wanted to-"

"I understand," Scree then said while brus.h.i.+ng the top of the pouting G.o.ddess' head, "Don't worry, I'm sure it'll go better next time."

'...Such a failure as a G.o.ddess of despair,' both deities thought simultaneously.

"Also, if your next meet up does go poorly, you could always just have me show her the video I've been recording of you for the last thirty seconds," Scree said in a cheerful tone.

"That's right, you could always-..." Sorrow began, but then froze as she processed the words, "...what did you just say?"

Sorrow then slowly raised her gaze to meet Scree's, immediately noticing that latter's eyes were glowing faintly silver in colour, a clear indication that recording magic was likely being used.

A short while later...

'Hmm... as I thought,' thought Scree, as she dodged yet another ball of concentrated darkness being thrown at her by Sorrow, 'she looks much cuter angry then when she's sad.'
