44 Happy Birthday

Eventually, only a handful remained still drinking over civil conversation.

"Hey, Famine, take a break," Trix said when he patted my shoulder and took over the serving duty.

I went to join my brothers on a leather lounge in the seating area near the wall of books and noticed they were talking to Ca.s.s and Saku.

"Ca.s.s!"

I warmly greeted the stylish man in a black and white double breasted business suit with a silk navy-white striped tie visible in the s.h.i.+rt and jacket's spread area. His hands were covered in sleek black gloves and feet in s.h.i.+ny loafers. His neatly cropped hair was slicked back with his fringe parted and combed across to one side to show more of his angelic, handsome features.

"Famine. You look good. I noticed you changed your bow tie to a regular red tie. I love the almost black waistcoat and sleeveless white s.h.i.+rt Louis picked for you. Makes your legs look longer in your smooth fitting slacks. Your spellbook looks smart against the waistcoat's bra.s.s b.u.t.tons too. It's a nice combination." Ca.s.s stood to appraise my look.

"Yeah, Dionysus picked these out. I was kind of worried about not wearing sleeves, but so light and airy when I take off my jacket and gloves." I innocently answered and yelped at the firm pressing Ca.s.s was giving my arms.

He was intensely testing and feeling for puppy fat by the looks.

"You're arms are skinny yet muscular." He mumbled his conclusion to my muscle strength.

"Um, okay." I raised my brows, not sure if I should take it as being felt up or having undergone something of a doctor's examination.

He released my arm and sat back down in his seat next to Saku. "You're not a man to slack off that's for sure. Unlike my partner, who should be here by now."

Ca.s.s's cordial expression become an irritable frown.

"Partner? As in business?" I sat in the spot next to Death and War on the three-seater.

Saku chuckled. "No, as in marriage."

I frowned, trying to picture Ca.s.s being married and the image of a pot-belly Louis came to mind. Was he married to that man? I guess everyone had their tastes.

War burst with laughter. "Famisto thinks dat yah married to Louis."

"Hey! Stop snooping in my mind!" I growled at War.

Ca.s.s smiled. "I guess he is my partner. Louis would be a business partner."

His voice sobered to a deadly seriousness. "No, my married partner is a knight and captain."

Our conversations changed to lighter topics that lifted Ca.s.s's mood again. We were in discussion about grabbing an order of drinks when Colin joined our group.

Ca.s.s abruptly rose to greet the stylish captain.

"You're late! You ask me to come here and dare arrive one hour late!" He snapped at Colin, his fingers rephrasing his complaints with a lot of rude gestures.

Colin didn't look unperturbed, rather he came up close to Ca.s.s and placed a kiss on his cheek.

_"Sorry Honey. I got caught up with some work out in the field."_ He apologised with a tender stroke to Ca.s.s's cheek.

My eyes were blinking madly at the lovey dovey couple scene happening before me, trying to fit two and two together.

_"Famisto. Dat be Ca.s.s's husband."_ War answered for me in my head.

Oh, s.h.i.+t. If Ca.s.s and Colin were married, that meant that Ca.s.s was the jealous wife Leinard had mentioned early.

"Um, I guess I better go tend the bar." I quickly rose from my seat and hurried back to be behind the bar counter again.

I shoved Trix out of the serving area who was all too happy to get back to his "happy hour" again and down drinks with the rest of his team.

"Break time over so soon?" Leinard smirked as he resumed his earlier seat before the bar.

"I met Colin's wife." I shuddered, thinking back to the fierce magic Ca.s.s wielded when I was Charlese, and we were escaping Marlo's mansion.

"A beauty isn't he." Leinard continued to smirk.

I frowned at his face, trying to determine what angle he was playing at. I noticed his eyes was a bit glazed over and lips were more relaxed than usual. Was he drunk?

"Yep!" Leinard answered with a hiccup.

He clumsily shuffled out of the seat and made his way around the bar. I yelped when he grabbed my waist and reeled me in.

"I heard, on good authority, today is your birthday. So, I'm giving you a gift." Leinard whispered, blowing the stench of sweet-smelling liquor into my face.

"Trix. Man the bar." Leinard ordered his brother, grabbed my hand and dragged me out of the bar area.

He led me past my brothers still seated on the lounge and ignoring my plea for help, and to a gla.s.s door in the corner of the book shelf walls, which had been hidden from view earlier.

We pa.s.sed through the doors and down a black-gold marble floor, white and brown paisley wallpaper hallway with silver floral scones and lamps lighting our way to a single black door at the end. The door s.h.i.+mmered with an oily light, making the bra.s.s k.n.o.b and silver keyhole obvious.

Leinard pulled out key and opened the door.

"Come on." He swung the door wide to invite me inside.

I was in awe by the sight beyond the threshold.
