13 Talk! || Part 2

"Stop scaring the poor girl," I strictly banter not exactly realizing I'm saying something out of the ordinary.

Bee catches on, "Since when do you care?"

"I don't." I jab back. A glint pa.s.ses in Bee's eyes and I already know the answer. Instead of saying sorry to the new girl, as I probably should've, I walk away and head to our second period. Before all of that, the three of us were walking the girl to her French cla.s.s; Bee and I don't take foreign languages cla.s.s since we've completed them.

Her schedule was shown to us this morning and saw how she's in two out of our three AP cla.s.ses and just plain old history.

As I round about the corner to the left hallway, I now decide AP English is my most hated subject. Why? Because f.u.c.king Rennie is calling me over. Typically I would've ignored him but I got a feeling he would be bothering me all day if I do.

"Yo, Z!" I visibly groan upon approaching Rennie letting him know I don't wish to be around him. The smirk on his face, grows.

"What Rennie?" I question brashly whilst eyeing all the other guys around him, hoping my intimidating stoic glare was secretly having them p.i.s.s in their pants.

"Are you coming?" It's the same question he always ask me, every Friday and today is Friday. I always go to Rennie's bonfires but lately the reason has been different for the past month. I know making amends has been my main priority way before the thought was present; school year is almost over.

I go, but don't do much other than cheer on Bee.

"You know d.a.m.n well I'm not helping again." I elucidate pointedly, gripping on the strap of my black Vans bag. I begin to tap my foot lightly, highlighting my irritation. Some of the guys took notice and backed away from the circle enclosing around Rennie.

Rennie is oblivious as usual.

"Why do you a.s.sume that, Z? I asked if you were coming, not the other way around." His tone is badgering and I narrow my eyes in his pasty brown ones.

Rennie most likely has something under his sleeve, for someone oblivious to social cues - he can be quite smart. I could be wrong, I think he's still hung up on me helping him again. I don't know, I can't pinpoint this feeling of uncertainty.

Almost a bad feeling.

"Why a.s.sume the truth?" My voice feel it is slightly wavering, anxiousness starts to bubble up, darting my eyes to one of the guys around Rennie again. They unconsciously land on Dennison, Denny for short, hoping he got the hint before Rennie distracted me again.

"Well, are you?" I bit my lip then throw my head back to crack away the cricks in my neck. I look at Rennie again who has his - once crossed arms - hands in pockets.

"... Debatable," I leave a lingering answer rather than absolute. Give him time to doubt his thoughts - purposely.

But Rennie disturbingly grins and starts walking away backwards, the few other boys a bit further from his trail. "Bring that short one, will you, dude. Tell Beverly, I got her covered!"

I paused.  "Wait, short one?"

Rennie stops walking and looks at me, dumbfounded. "Seriously, Z? That girl with zebra hair?"

"Oh, yeah no - not happening." I shake my head violently. Mom would f.u.c.king kill me if I let her anywhere near Rennie's bonfires. Plus she doesn't even seem the type of girl to party. After seeing the way she reacted to those fireflies last night, I'm pegging her to be somewhat innocent.

"I'll be sure to cry in my sleep tonight." Rennie taunts, "Bring her. She might want to," he added hastily.

I lick my lip, taking what he said to thought. Okay, maybe she could be the type to go to parties like Rennie's.  Although, recalling to the s.h.i.+t Rennie and his boy toys that where yodeling earlier - I, myself, don't like the idea.

"Why so eager? Could just ask her yourself," I question, hoping he'd let the topic go.

"You and Beverly wouldn't let her near me. But knowing Beverly, she will make her come anyways." I wrinkle my nose at the blatant way he spoke of it. He's not wrong.

About Beverly - I could care less at the other elephant in the room, it's my mother who'd shoot me.

"Don't you have something to suck, Rennie?" I snark, my anxiousness died down but I'm still annoyed.

"Don't worry, I got breath mints," He exhales deeply for great measure.

"You're not helping," I deadpan.

"And you are?" He jabs back, crossing his arms again.

I hesitate. "No."

Why did I hesitate?

The late bell brings and I curse under my breath. All the while Rennie is just about out of my sight when he shouts,

"See you all tonight then, Z."
