10 Let's Make A Bet!

The carpenter was working on wooden planks and was pretty focused on his job.

"Good morning." Aron greeted him and the person stopped the work immediately and looked at him.

"Good morning, kid. What brings you here?"

"The same reason as before. I am looking for work. The previous time, I was weak but this time it's a different case."

He appraised the carpenter.

[Name: John]

'He is pretty average in most of the stats. Little more agile than a normal person.'

"I am not sure, kid. You probably don't know anything about my line of work. Just give up, stop wasting my time, kid."

'It won't be easy, yet let's rely on his greed.'

"Let's make a bet. You will let me work for a week, and if after a week of work. I will be still useless, I will get you chicken from Roger. However, if I will be useful to you after week, you will let me work here and give me some planks. How does it sound?"

John was greedy and getting chicken was a good deal. The boy will help him for free for the entire week, additionally, he will get chicken for free.

"Ok, kid, your bet intrigued me. Don't go back on your word. I don't care how will you get this chicken." He exclaimed while dreaming about chicken's meat, little of his saliva escaped his mouth.

The woodworking wasn't complicated in Aron's eyes, the only thing he needed was to see it once and rest was repeating and perfecting the technique.

They began to work, Aron was mostly moving things and doing the stupid task. John was actually shocked by the strength of this boy and his eyes sparkled. Having a strong person to carry around things for you wasn't a bad deal.

Aron observed and did mental notes after John left to eat. He picked up the saw and started repeating the procedures. It didn't take long until skill was generated.

[Woodworking skill was generated. Woodworking lv.0(1/100)]

[Carpenter profession was generated. Do you wish to activate it?]

'Yes. It will be useful.'

The carpenter requirement of unlocking the profession was easier than a farmer.

[Profession: Farmer lv.3(566/10000), Carpenter lv.0(1/5000)]

'The first level requires 5000... It will take some time to level up.'

[Carpenter]

[Desc: The profession related to woodworking. Unlocks knowledge and woodworking related skills.]

[Grade: Mortal]

[Boost: DEX+0.1 per level.]

'DEX? Dexterity, not strength nor agility. Interesting.'

[Generating dexterity stat.]

[Dexterity: 1.5]

'It's even better than John's. I am perfect for this job. HAHA'

'Ohh, what's this mortal grade.'

[Skills and profession related to mortal materials and the mortal world are graded mortal. There are higher grades but the host doesn't need to know it yet.]

During work, sometimes boy asked questions about some job and John answered most of them with annoyance. This allowed leveling up woodworking quite fast. It was the fifth day but John noticed that Aron is more than useful and said.

"You win, kid. You can take a few planks but don't take too much. It's enough for today, I think we can discuss the terms of your working here." It was quite hard but he lost the bet and waiting to the full week would be useless.

During these few days, Aron finished harvesting the farming area. At least, he didn't need to move the crops to storage, this process could be done with thoughts and items teleported to the storage by the system.

The new problem arose, the wheat needs to be processed into grains. The rest of the plant is mostly used to feed cattle. There are not many cattle in this village, it was weird. There are some plains in the west of the village.

'I need to visit the village chief, the problem is convincing him to teach me how to read and write.'

He started from repairing his hut, with some knowledge about carpentry. It wasn't really hard.

'The entire design sucks but it's more than enough for an ordinary villager. Many things can be improved but I won't help these people. Only Rose and Roger deserve my attention and the rest of these people can go die.'

The carpentry wasn't most important for him, so he promised to come once a week to work. Most important was to get recognition of the village, even if he didn't care about these people much. They could teach him, some useful skills related to different things.

Day after day, he visited many households and offered help. This time people didn't chase him and accepted his a.s.sistance. Time to sow crops was slowly coming to end, so they became desperate.

Despite his previous useless existence, he was actually better at sowing than many of them and thanks to him. They could finish sowing in time, some of them changed opinion about him and started to treat him like an insider.

Thanks to slow acceptance, he learned how to handle animals on one of the farms. This experience was interesting for him as living animals are definitely more interesting than crops.

There were few households without men, so he offered help for free. In exchange, some women taught him how to weave the clothes and cook.

It was time to visit, the village chief. His reputation changed and the only blacksmith wasn't talking to him.

The house of the village chief was in the middle of the village. It had a big herbal garden around the building. Aron recognized some of these herbs and it would be nice to absorb them to s.p.a.ce, yet he didn't do it. He approached the doors and knocked. Old man with white hair and wrinkled face came out.

"Good morning, the village chief."

"Welcome, little Aron. What brings you here?" Asked curious old man.

"I am very young and I like learning new things. Could you teach me how to read and write?"
