Part 8

6 [6:35]And when much time had already pa.s.sed, his disciples came to him and said, This is a solitary place, and much time has already pa.s.sed; [6:36]dismiss them, that they may go to the farms and villages around, and buy them something to eat. [6:37]And he answered and said to them, Give them something to eat. And they said to him, Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii [$28] worth of bread, and give them to eat?

[6:38]And he said to them, How many loaves have you? go and see. And knowing, they said, Five, and two fishes. [6:39]And he commanded them to cause all to recline in companies on the green gra.s.s. [6:40]And they sat down in squares, by hundreds and by fifties. [6:41]And taking the five loaves and two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them.

And he divided the two fishes to all. [6:42]And they all eat, and were filled; [6:43]and they took up of fragments twelve traveling-baskets full, and of the fishes. [6:44] And they that eat the bread were five thousand men.

7 [6:45]And he immediately constrained his disciples to go into the ship, and to go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the mult.i.tude; [6:46]and having dismissed them, he went away to the mountain to pray. [6:47]And when it was evening, the ship was in the midst of the lake, and he alone on the land. [6:48]And seeing them troubled to proceed, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them walking on the lake, and wished to pa.s.s by them. [6:49]And seeing him walking on the lake, they thought it was an apparition, and cried out, [6:50]for they all saw and were troubled. And immediately he spoke with them, and said to them, Be of good courage; it is I; be not afraid. [6:51]And he went up to them into the ship, and the wind ceased, and they were astonished in themselves above measure, and wondered; [6:52]for they understood not concerning the bread, for their heart was hardened.

8 [6:53]And crossing over they came to the land of Gennesaret, and came to anchor. [6:54]And going out of the ship, they immediately knew him, [6:55]and ran about through that whole country, and brought those that were sick on beds where they heard that he was. [6:56]And wherever he went, in villages, or cities, or country places, they placed the sick in the markets, and besought him that they might touch the fringe of his garment, and as many as touched him were cured.

CHAPTER VII.

CHRIST'S DOCTRINE OF DEFILEMENT; CURING A GENTILE DEMONIAC, AND A DEAF AND DUMB PERSON.

1 [7:1]AND the Pharisees and some of the scribes having come from Jerusalem came together to him, [7:2]and seeing some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, unwashed hands, [they found fault].

[7:3]For the Pharisees and all the Jews eat not unless they wash their hands with the fist, holding the tradition of the elders. [7:4]And from a market, unless they baptize they eat not; and there are many other [customs] which they have received to hold; baptisms, of cups and s.e.xtuses [1 1-2 pint measures], and bra.s.s vessels, and beds. [7:5]And the Pharisees and scribes asked, Why do not your disciples conform to the tradition of the elders; but eat bread with defiled hands?

2 [7:6]And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophecy of you, hypocrites, as it is written; This people honors me with the lips, but their heart is far from me; [7:7]but in vain do they worship me, teaching for teachings the commandments of men; [7:8]for leaving the commandment of G.o.d, you hold the tradition of men.

3 [7:9]And he said to them, Well do you reject the commandment of G.o.d, to keep your tradition; [7:10]for Moses said, Honor your father and your mother, and, He that reviles father or mother, let him surely die.

[7:11]But you say, If a man says to his father or mother, It is a corban, which is a gift, by whatever you might be profited by me, [he shall be free]; [7:12]and suffer him no longer to do any thing for his father or his mother; [7:13]making the word of G.o.d of no effect by your tradition which you have delivered; and many such things you do.

[7:14]And again calling all the people, he said to them, Hear me, all of you, and understand. [7:15]Nothing which being out of a man entering into him, can defile him; but those things which proceed from the man, these are the things which defile the man.

4 [7:17]And when he had gone from the mult.i.tude into the house, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. [7:18]And he said to them, Are you also so without understanding? Do you not understand that nothing which enters into a man from without can defile him, [7:19]because it enters not into his heart, but into the stomach, and goes out to the earth, purifying all aliments? [7:20] But he said, that which comes out of the man, this defiles him; [7:21]for from within, from the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, fornications, [7:22] thefts, murders, adulteries, covetousness, malice, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. [7:23]All these evil things proceed from within, and defile the man.

5 [7:24]And he rose up, and departed thence to the regions of Tyre. And entering into a house he wished no one to know it; and he could not be hid. [7:25]But immediately, a woman whose little daughter had an impure spirit, hearing of him, came and fell down at his feet; [7:26]and she was a Greek, a Syrophenician by race; and she asked him to cast the demon out of her daughter. [7:27]And he said to her, Suffer the children first to be filled; it is not right to take the children's bread, and cast it to the little dogs. [7:28]And she answered and said to him, Yes, Lord; for even the little dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. [7:29]And he said to her, For this speech, go; the demon has gone out of your daughter. [7:30]And departing to her house, she found the little child laid on the bed, and the demon gone out.

6 [7:31]And again going out of the bounds of Tyre, he came through Sidon, to the lake of Galilee, in the midst of the bounds of Decapolis.

[7:32]And they brought him a dumb man that stammered, and besought him to put his hand on him. [7:33]And taking him from the mult.i.tude by himself, he put his fingers in his ears, and spit, and touched his tongue, [7:34]and looking up to heaven he groaned, and said to him, Ephphatha, which is, Be opened. [7:35]And immediately his ears were opened, and the cord of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke correctly.

[7:36]And he charged them to tell no one; but as much as he charged them, so much the more they proclaimed [his works]. [7:37]And they were astonished above measure, and said, He has done all things well; he makes both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

CHAPTER VIII.

CHRIST FEEDING THE FOUR THOUSAND, REFUSING TO GIVE A SIGN FROM HEAVEN, WARNING HIS DISCIPLES AGAINST THE PHARISEES, CURING A BLIND MAN, CALLING FORTH PETER'S CONFESSION, AND PREDICTING HIS OWN DEATH.

1 [8:1]IN those days, again a very great mult.i.tude being [around him], and not having any thing to eat, calling his disciples, he said to them, [8:2]I have compa.s.sion on the mult.i.tude, because already they have continued with me three days, and have nothing to eat; [8:3]and if I send them fasting to their homes, they will faint by the way, for some of them are from afar. [8:4]And his disciples answered him, Whence will one be able to satisfy these with bread here in a wilderness?

[8:5]And he asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven.

[8:6]And he commanded the mult.i.tude to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, and giving thanks, he broke and gave them to his disciples to set before them, and they set them before the people.

[8:7]And they had a few small fishes; and having blessed them, he commanded to present them also. [8:8]And they eat and were filled; and they took up of the fragments that remained over, seven store-baskets; [8:9]and they were about four thousand. And he dismissed them.

2 [8:10]And entering immediately into the ship, with his disciples, he came into the parts of Dalmanutha. [8:11]And the Pharisees went out and questioned him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, to try him.

[8:12]And groaning in his spirit, he said, Why does this generation seek a sign? I tell you truly, there shall no sign be given to this generation. [8:13]And leaving them, he entered again into the ship, and went away to the other side.

3 [8:14]And they forgot to take bread, and had but one loaf with them in the ship. [8:15]And he charged them, saying, Observe and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. [8:16]And they reasoned with themselves, because they had no bread. [8:17]And Jesus knowing it, said to them, Why do you reason because you have no bread?

Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart hardened?

[8:18]Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?

And do you not remember? [8:19]When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many traveling baskets of fragments took you up?

They said to him, Twelve. [8:20]And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many store-baskets of fragments took you up? And they said, Seven. [8:21]And he said to them, Do you not yet understand?

4 [8:22]And they came to Bethsaida; and they brought him a blind man, and besought him to touch him. [8:23]And taking the hand of the blind man, he brought him out of the village, and spitting on his eyes, and putting his hands on him, he asked him, Do you see any thing? [8:24]And looking up he said, I see men, as trees walking. [8:25]Then he put his hands on his eyes again, and he looked, and was restored, and saw all things clearly. [8:26]And he sent him to his house, saying, Go not into the village.

5 [8:27]And Jesus went away, and his disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, saying to them, Who do men say that I am? [8:28]And they spoke to him, saying, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others still, One of the prophets. [8:29]And he asked them, And who say you that I am? Peter answered and said to him, You are the Christ. [8:30] And he charged them to tell no one of him. [8:31]And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and the scribes; and be killed, and after three days be raised again. [8:32]And he spoke this word plainly; and Peter taking hold of him, rebuked him. [8:33]But turning round, and looking on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, Get behind me, Satan! for you regard not the things of G.o.d, but the things of men.

6 [8:34]And calling the mult.i.tude, with his disciples, he said to them, Whoever wishes to follow after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. [8:35]For whoever wishes to save his life, shall lose it; and whoever shall lose his life for my sake, and that of the good news, shall save it. [8:36]For what will it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his life? [8:37]for what is the exchange for his life? [8:38]For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father, with the holy angels. [9:1]And he said to them, I tell you truly, that there are some of those standing here, who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of G.o.d having come with power.

CHAPTER IX.

CHRIST TRANSFIGURED, CURING A DEMONIAC, AGAIN PREDICTING HIS DEATH, THE PRINCIPLES OF HIS KINGDOM.

1 [9:2]AND after six days Jesus took Peter, and James, and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves alone, and was transfigured before them; [9:3]and his garments became shining, extremely white, so that no fuller on the earth could whiten them.

[9:4]And Elijah appeared to them; with Moses, and they conversed with Jesus. [9:5]And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and we will make three tabernacles, one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah; [9:6]for he knew not what he answered, for they were afraid. [9:7]And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came from the cloud, This is my beloved Son; hear him. [9:8]And looking round immediately they no longer saw any one but Jesus alone with them.

2 [9:9]And coming down from the mountain he charged them to tell no man what they had seen, till the Son of man should have risen from the dead. [9:10]And they kept the word, inquiring with themselves what the rising from the dead meant. [9:11]And they asked him, saying, Why do the scribes say that Elijah must first come? [9:12]And he said to them, Elijah comes first, and restores all things; as also it is written of the Son of man, That he shall suffer many things, and be set at naught; [9:13]but I tell you, that Elijah has come, and they have done to him what they wished, as it was written of him.

3 [9:14]And coming to the disciples, he saw a great mult.i.tude about them, and the scribes disputing with them. [9:15]And immediately all the mult.i.tude seeing him, were highly pleased, and ran forward and saluted him. [9:16]And he asked, What were you disputing about with them? [9:17]And one of the mult.i.tude answered him, Teacher, I have brought my son to you, having a dumb spirit; [9:18]and wherever it takes him it convulses him, and he foams and grates his teeth, and becomes emaciated. And I spoke to your disciples to cast it out, and they could not. [9:19]And he answered and said to them, O faithless and perverse generation! How long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him to me. [9:20]And they brought him to him. And seeing him, the spirit immediately affected him with convulsions, and he fell on the ground, and rolled about, foaming. [9:21]And he asked his father, How long a time is it since this came upon him? And he said, From a little child; [9:22]and it often casts him into fire, and into waters, to destroy him; but if you are able, help us, and have mercy on us. [9:23]And Jesus said to him, If you are able? all things are possible to him that believes. [9:24]And the father of the little child immediately crying out, said, I believe; help my unbelief.

4 [9:25]And Jesus seeing that a mult.i.tude ran together, rebuked the impure spirit, saying to him, Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him, and enter into him no more. [9:26]And crying out and affecting him with many convulsions, he went out. And he was like a dead person, so that many said, He is dead. [9:27]But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him up, and he stood up. [9:28]And when he went into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could we not cast it out? [9:29]And he said to them, This kind can go out by nothing but prayer.

5 [9:30]And departing thence, he pa.s.sed through Galilee, and desired that no one should know him, [9:31]for he taught his disciples, and said to them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him. And when he is killed, on the third day he shall rise again. [9:32]And they understood not the word, and were afraid to ask him.

6 [9:33]And he came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house, he asked them, What did you dispute about on the way? [9:34]And they were silent; for they had disputed with each other on the way as to who was the greatest. [9:35]And he sat down and called the twelve, and said to them, If any one wishes to be first, he shall be last of all, and a servant of all. [9:36]And taking a little child, he put it in the midst of them, and taking it in his arms, said to them, [9:37] Whoever receives one such little child in my name, receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me, but him that sent me. [9:38]And John spoke to him, saying, Teacher, we saw some one casting out demons in your name, who follows not us, and we forbade him. [9:39]And Jesus said, Forbid him not; for no one will perform a mighty work in my name, and be able lightly to speak evil of me. [9:40]For whoever is not against us is for us; [9:41]and whoever gives you a cup of water because you are Christ's, truly he shall not lose his reward.

7 [9:42]And whoever shall offend one of the little ones having faith, it would be better for him if a millstone was put about his neck and he was cast into the sea. [9:43]And if your hand offends you, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life crippled, than having two hands to go away into h.e.l.l, into the inextinguishable fire. [9:45]And if your foot offends you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life lame, than having two feet to be cast into h.e.l.l. [9:47]And if your eye offends you, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of G.o.d with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into h.e.l.l, [9:48]where the worm dies not and the fire is not extinguished. [9:49]

For every man shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. [9:50]Salt is good; but if the salt has become insipid, with what will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace one with another.

CHAPTER X.

CHRIST'S DOCTRINE OF MARRIAGE, CHILDREN AND THE WAY OF SALVATION, HIS DEATH PREDICTED, AND SIGHT RESTORED TO BARTIMEUS.

1 [10:1]AND he arose and went thence into the bounds of Judea, and beyond the Jordan; and again mult.i.tudes came together to him, and again he taught them as he was accustomed. [10:2]And the Pharisees came and asked him, to try him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife?

[10:3]And he answered and said to them, What did Moses command you?

[10:4]And they said, Moses permitted us to write a bill of divorcement and put her away. [10:5]And Jesus said to them, Because of your hardness of heart, he wrote you this ordinance; [10:6]but from the beginning of creation, he made them male and female. [10:7]For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and the two shall be one flesh; [10:8] so that they are no longer two, but one flesh. [10:9]What G.o.d therefore has yoked together, let not man separate.

2 [10:10]And his disciples asked him again, in the house, concerning this. [10:11]And he said to them, Whoever puts away his wife and marries another, commits adultery with her; [10:12]and if a woman puts away her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.

3 [10:13]And they brought him little children that he should touch them; and the disciples rebuked those who brought them. [10:14]But Jesus seeing it, was displeased, and said to them, Suffer the little children to come to me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of G.o.d. [10:15]I tell you truly, that whoever does not receive the kingdom of G.o.d as a little child, shall not enter into it. [10:16]And he took them in his arms, and laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

4 [10:17]And as he was going on the way, one ran before and kneeled down to him, and asked him, Good teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? [10:18]And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good?

none is good but one, G.o.d. [10:19]You know the commandments; You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not testify falsely, You shall not defraud, Honor your father and mother. [10:20]And he answered and said to him, Teacher, all these have I kept from my youth. [10:21]And Jesus looking at him, loved him, and said to him, One thing you lack; go and sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have a treasure in heaven; and come and take up your cross and follow me. [10:22]And he was grieved at this saying, and went away sad, for he had great possessions.

5 [10:23]And Jesus looking around said to his disciples, With what difficulty shall those having riches enter into the kingdom of G.o.d!

[10:24]And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, Children, with what difficulty shall those who trust in riches enter into the kingdom of G.o.d! [10:25]It is easier for a camel to pa.s.s through the eye of the needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of G.o.d. [10:26]And they were greatly astonished, and said to themselves, Who then can be saved? [10:27]Jesus looking on them, said, With men it is impossible, but not with G.o.d; for with G.o.d all things are possible.
