76.10 Jesus Heals Bartimaeus, a Blind Man, as He Enters Jericho

MK 10:46-52

46 And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great mult.i.tude, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" 48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

49 So Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." And they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; rise, he is calling you." 50 And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" And the blind man said to him, "Master, let me receive my sight." 52 Then Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.

LK 18:35-43

35 As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 And hearing a mult.i.tude going by, he asked what this meant. 37 They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is pa.s.sing by." 38 And he cried out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" 39 And those who led the way rebuked him, telling him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" 40 So Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, 41 "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, I want to receive my sight." 42 And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." 43 And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying G.o.d. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to G.o.d.

77.10 Jesus and Zacchaeus

LK 19:1-10

1 Jesus entered Jericho and was pa.s.sing through. 2 Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pa.s.s that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." 6 So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." 9 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."

77.20 The Parable of the Ten Pounds

LK 19:11-27

11 As they heard these things, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of G.o.d was to appear immediately. 12 Therefore he said: "A certain n.o.bleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. 13 So he called ten of his servants, gave them ten minas, and said to them, 'Do business till I come.' 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' 15 And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading. 16 Then came the first, saying, ' Master, your mina has earned ten minas more.' 17 And he said to him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, be in authority over ten cities.' 18 And the second came, saying, 'Master, your mina has earned five minas.' 19 Likewise he said to him, 'You also be over five cities.' 20 Then another came, saying, 'Master, here is your mina, which I have kept laid away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man.

You take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.'

22 He said to him, 'I will judge you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a hard man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?' 24 And he said to those who stood by, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.' 25 And they said to him, 'Master, he has ten minas already!' 26 'I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.'"

78.10 Jesus Heals Two Blind Man as He Leaves Jericho

MT 20:29-34

29 And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him.

30 And behold, two blind men sitting by the roadside, when they heard that Jesus was pa.s.sing by, cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" 31 The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be quiet; but they cried out all the more, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" 32 And Jesus stopped and called them, saying, "What do you want me to do for you? " 33 They said to him, "Lord, let our eyes be opened." 34 And Jesus had compa.s.sion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

79.10 I and the Father are One

JN 10:22-42

22 Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple, walking in Solomon's Porch. 24 So the Jews gathered round him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." 25 Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me; 26 but you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one shall s.n.a.t.c.h them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to s.n.a.t.c.h them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one."

31 The Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" 33 The Jews answered him, "For a good work we do not stone you, but for blasphemy, and because you, being a man, make yourself G.o.d." 34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, you are G.o.ds'? 35 If he called them G.o.ds, to whom the word of G.o.d came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of G.o.d'? 37 If I do not do the works of my father, do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father." 39 Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped from their hands.

40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there he stayed. 41 And many came to him and they said, "John performed no sign, but all that John said about this man was true." 42 And many believed in him there.

80.10 Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead

JN 11:1-57

1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was this Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, he whom you love is sick." 4 When Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of G.o.d, so that the Son of G.o.d may be glorified through it." 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when he heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again." 8 The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?" 9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him." 11 These things he said, and after that he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to wake him up." 12 His disciples said, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will recover."

13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 So then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead; 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." 16 Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."

17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary sat in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask of G.o.d, G.o.d will give you."

23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24 Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" 27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of G.o.d, who is to come into the world."

28 And when she had said this, she went her way and called Mary her sister, saying, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." 29 When she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was and saw him, fell at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 And he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see."

35 Jesus wept.

36 Then the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" 37 But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"

38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone."

Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been dead four days." 40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of G.o.d?" 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing by, that they may believe that you sent me." 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with grave clothes, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come to Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation." 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all! 50 You do not understand that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish." 51 He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for that nation only, but also that he would gather together into one the children of G.o.d who were scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they plotted to put him to death.

54 Jesus therefore no longer went about openly among the Jews, but went from there to the country near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim; and there he stayed with his disciples.

55 Now the Pa.s.sover of the Jews was at hand, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Pa.s.sover, to purify themselves.

56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?"

57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, so that they might arrest him.

Part 11 - PALM SUNDAY

81.10 Mary Anoints Jesus for His Burial

MT 26:6-13

6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive perfume, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. 8 But when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste? 9 For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and given to the poor." 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. 12 For in pouring this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.

13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."

MK 14:3-9

1 It was now two days before the Pa.s.sover and the feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth, and kill him. 2 But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people."

3 And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly. And she broke the flask and poured it over his head. 4 But there were some who said to themselves indignantly, "Why was this ointment wasted? 5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they criticized her sharply. 6 But Jesus said, "Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you will, you can do good to them; but you will not always have me. 8 She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial. 9 And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."

JN 12:1-8

1 Then, six days before the Pa.s.sover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, said, 5 "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief; and as he had the money box, he used to take what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, "Let her alone, she has kept this for the day of my burial. 8 The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me."

81:20 Public Excitement with Regard to Jesus and Lazarus

JN 12:9-11

9 Now a great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, and they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus also to death, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

81:30 Jesus Makes His Triumphal Entrance into Jerusalem

MT 21:1-11

1 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If any one says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,'

and he will send them immediately." 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying: 5 "Tell the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your King is coming to you, lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. 8 And a very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went before him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

Hosanna in the highest!"

10 And when he entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, "Who is this?" 11 So the crowds said, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee."

MK 11:1-10

1 And when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, 2 and said to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' say, 'The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.'" 4 They went away and found a colt tied at the door outside in the open street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those who stood there said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and they let them go. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their garments on the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed cried out, "Hosanna!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
