3 Chapter Three

He quickly introduced Steve to her as his colleague in the office, and as three of them were standing talking her friend excused himself to attend to some issues. Steve and Susan exchanged contact. This meeting would later lead to a relations.h.i.+p then a marriage in the future as these were the things Steve was also looking for.

After a few weeks they started dating, while hoping for the best, she was also expecting the worst because she thought Steve would be like others. While trusting G.o.d to make things work out for good and it seemed Steve was different from others, Susan was still careful not to build her hope on him because human beings can fail at times. She was always prepared to face the worst because the tortoise says that the reason why it carries its sh.e.l.l along anywhere it goes is due to the fear of the unknown and in case of any eventuality it would find a shelter.

When Susan found out Steve was not interested in s.e.x like others but love, she made up her mind to love him unconditionally. She started thinking of how to be the best wife to him when Steve told her about having a future with her. She knew he was real and he was not using marriage proposal as a means to get in between her legs. Many occasions, Susan had seen where men used marriage proposals as a way of getting in between a girl's leg especially if the girl tells them she's keeping her body for her future husband, and once the guy gets what he's looking for, he would dump the girl leaving her broken.

Susan can't forget the night Steve proposed to her. It was one of the happiest days in her life. He invited her in his house and when she knocked on the door, Steve gently opened it knowing full well she was the only visitor he was expecting. Wow, she couldn't believe what she saw. It was a red-carpet ovation that led to his room and she majestically walked on it as a queen; Both sides of the red carpet were garnished with the different colors of the roses, but the most interesting one was the red rose he used to form the symbol of love on the center of his bed. The room was well decorated with the different colors of light, (almost the seven colors of the rainbow were represented). Everywhere was scenting heavenly.

He ushered her to his bed, brought a bottle of champagne and served. While she was sipping hers, Steve quickly lowered his gla.s.s of wine on the table and reached for a little box. When he opened it, it was a sparkling diamond ring. He gently knelt before her and said, "Susan, would you marry me?"

Susan's eyes widened, "Wow, could this be real or my imagination?" she said to herself. She did not utter a word but looked at the ring over and over again; she was not looking at it because she had never seen one before, but because a lot was going on in her mind. Susan was asking herself if it was real or hallucination because she knew what she had been through in the hands of the wrong men she met before finally meeting Steve.

Steve asked her the second time, "Susan, would you marry me?" Susan nodded in ecstasy like an agama lizard that saw a female lizard entering into its area of authority; She whispered in an angelic voice, "Yes, yes, yes, I will marry you, Steve." Overwhelmed with joy, Susan stood up and hugged him. She could see the joy that filled Steve's heart because it was written all over his face. That was when Steve drank his wine and tuned up the volume of the background love song that made the atmosphere cozy. The smile on his face reminded Susan how the b.u.t.terfly celebrates and caresses the rose at the rising of the sun in a blue sky after so many days of storm.

It was getting late and he had to drop her off. As Susan got up to leave, Steve held her hand and whispered in her ear "When I hug you, I want you to know how much I love to be with you. When I hold you, I want you to understand how much I never wanted to let you go. When I kiss you, I want you to feel how much I miss you. When I look into your eyes, I want you to see how much I want you. In your arms, I want you to feel how much I need you. In your heart, I want you to know how much I need you. In my breath, I want you to feel how much I want you." After saying these, Susan remembered what Steve told her on how he had been in wrong relations.h.i.+p before meeting her. Susan believed Steve treasured the relations.h.i.+p because of his past experiences with girls.

Susan was very happy to hear the little poem Steve whispered in her ear. She thanked him and reaffirmed her love for him. She looked straight to his eyes and said, "I fell in love because you made me believe in love. I see so much beauty in the valley when you took me down the pathway of love. In the ocean of doubt, you made me swim in trust. You cleared all my fears when I was afraid to love again. Love becomes so real to me when you planted it in my heart. Days of loneliness are over because you held my hands and took me to the shelter of your love.

I see more reality than fear; More trust than doubt. I see lighter than darkness; More joy than sadness. In your words I see trust. In your promises I see hope. In your arms I found strength. In your eyes I see the future. In your heart I feel love; In your love I found peace. In your peace I found rest; In the rest I feel like I am home. In my darkness you turn to moon; In the cloud you are my blue sky.

When I was in a sad mood you appeared like an eraser and wiped off my sad memory and became a pencil that drew my joy. In fear, doubt, and emotions you were able to read those unsaid words in my silent heart. When I was wandering in confusion in the lost world of love you opened your heart for me."

Steve later took her home. As they started planning for the wedding, it dawned on them that they have not checked their genotype. They scheduled an appointment to do it. After running the test, Susan asked herself, "What if both of us are (AS)?" She took a deep breath and mumbled, "Hmm, Lord have mercy." They were asked to come back later to collect the result.

The day they went to collect the result, Susan did not go in with Steve because she was afraid what the result would be. She was in the car waiting for him. Steve, too, was also afraid what the result would be. As Susan was waiting for Steve to come out with the results, anxiety and tension seized her. When the two envelops that contained the result were given to Steve, he did not check them; he went straight to the car where Susan was waiting. When Steve gave Susan her own, she closed her eyes and prayed, "Lord, have mercy on me." Gripped with tension, Susan gave Steve her envelop back to check the result. When Steve saw Susan was (AS), his eyes widened, "What!" he exclaimed.

He closed his eyes and opened them again. He did not believe what he saw. Steve quickly opened his, "Jesus!" he shouted again. Sweat rolled down his thigh as he s.h.i.+fted closer to Susan to wipe away her tears.
