17 Regre

He brought the spear above his shoulders, right next to his right ear, aligned straight with his eyes. He'd watched the Olympics before, imitating javelin throwers to the best of his memory.

While taking a breathe to prepare his throw, the beasts eyes opened. It was lazy, almost lifeless. But to Zhao Wei he felt the atmosphere get heavier. His breathe was stuck, but the spear had flown.

By all accounts it should have failed, he didn't finish his throw, his body wasn't in it, he wasn't even far enough for the spear to generate speed and even he felt he had fumbled the throw by a large margin. But it hit dead on into the beast's throat and only met a little resistance from it's fur before entering and exiting from the other side.

But there was no great victory, the beast didn't even let out any death throes. Instead it let out a small gurgled grunt as if it showed both grat.i.tude and pity towards Zhao Wei before lightly closing it's eyes.

Now Zhao Wei felt something was wrong, there was no fight, no struggle, it was too easy. His eyes finally landed on the wound, suddenly he turned pale and cold sweat ran down his back. Usually with wounds like this blood would gush out by the buckets, but here, a small puddle could barely form under it's body. It was already dying before Zhao Wei had struck it, the question in his mind however is from what?

Just as this thought flashed across his mind, the beasts body rumbled left and right. The undergrowth that covered the rest of it's body before made way under this movement only to reveal a gaping hole under it's abdomen. Finally, Zhao Wei noticed the rotting stench of flesh and blood coming off from the beast.

Immediately, Zhao Wei prepped his other spear and loosened the pole, bracing his legs to run at a seconds notice. The beast's body stopped moving, but Zhao Wei wasn't relaxed yet.

Just as he was about to flee, he felt something watching him. Turning to his right, a single eye stared at him. A single slit of darkness covered by patches of yellow and gold covering none of it's malicious intentions. This eye rested on the right side of a lizard like head, it's lips were shut tight but it couldn't cover the grinding of the fist-sized teeth underneath. Dark green and yellowish scales adorned the head peeking out from a bush next to him.

Zhao Wei wanted to step back slowly before he heard another crackle to his left. This one wasn't hiding as Zhao Wei could see the muscled body threatening to break out of it's scales. It was propped on two large hind-legs which were solidly planted on four clawed toes on the ground. The things which caught Zhao Wei's attention the most however, was the one inner toe on each leg which was directed upwards, propping a crescent knife like claw.

This one was standing quite upright, on it's torso two smaller forearms were spotted two thirds up, they were shorter than it's legs but did not forget it's menacing claws. A long slender neck curved upwards holding it's unnerving head forward in Zhao Wei's direction, which released a rattle from it's throat like the sounds of death's footsteps.

Zhao Wei was extremely nervous of his chances, he slid his foot back to the noticeable attention of both reptiles as they tilted their heads as if confused by their prey's continued expectations of escape. The one to Zhao Wei's right emerged out from it's hiding, revealing it's no less ma.s.sive body. The one to his left, bent down to as if to brace itself to begin the chase, it's forelimbs dangling just above the forest floor as it's tail balanced it's body into a horizontal position over it's legs.

Though both were standing this way, they were still three quarters of Zhao Wei's height each and no less intimidating. With every step Zhao Wei took back wards, they also took a step forward. Suddenly, the right one turned it's head towards the beast's body and opened it's mouth to let out a sound between a howl and a rasp. It had finally revealed it's teeth which we're covered in an almost unholy yellowish sheen of liquid.

The beast's body rumbled again. Zhao Wei's brain as well as his senses were already on overdrive to try and figure a way out, but this had crushed his hopes into the dust. From under it, slid out a third of these reptilian monstrosities. This one was different. In it's eyes radiated a sinister intelligence and on it's head, a jutting yellow scale ran from it's forehead to the top of it's neck. It's forelimb claws sc.r.a.ped one another as if a butcher was sharpening his knives each one personally coated with the same pungent liquid they held near their tongues. Bent down, it's mouth was perfectly aligned to take his head and it's arms to hold him in comfort while it was doing so.

It let out a rattle towards both of it's companions who immediately showed nothing but greed in their eyes. It was obvious to Zhao Wei now that before, they had moved towards him to test his reaction, if he'd stood his ground, they'd have watched his actions a little longer and perhaps tested his capabilities. But now there was no room for regret, they were sure of what he was, and he was sure, that the hunt had begun.
