26 Outside World

Tang Ling climbed the stairs and went to the main street, the only path to one of the two gates of the city.

On the gate, there was a guard who looked over the people who entered and left the city. His job was to record the names and purposes of the people who wished to enter or leave and depending on the situation, he had the authority to reject. Actually, his job was very easy as there were few visitors and merchants who wished to visit or do business with the city and fewer in the city who wished to go outside. Most of the time, he would greet hunters and that was it and the pay was very good too.

"I got this position through boot licking but it's worth it !" He murmured.

He then saw a boy who looked very mature, he had a black raven bow on his back.

"Halt !"

Tang Ling stopped. He looked at the guard on the tower, he looked quite old around 30 or so.

"Name ?" The guard inquired.

Hearing, Tang Ling let out a sigh of relief. Thank G.o.d the guard here was a 'safe'. He had heard in the slum that there are a few corrupted guys that made things difficult for people who wished to leave.

"Tang Ling from the slum, sir."

"Motive ?"

"Hunting, sir."

The guard raised a brow, "Don't you know that you need to have a license to pa.s.s the gate and hunt ?"

This. He already knew but he didn't any money left to buy the so-called license but he remembered a moment with Ducke when he had a bad day... It was two years ago.

"Hey Tang Ling !"

"What ?" Tang Ling lifted his head from his phone and looked at the drunk Ducke laying on the wall.

"I really wish to become a hunter... Hunting beasts, gaining a huge amount of money so that I can live off as an average family with stable job which gives a hundred credits income monthly... A good wife could be good too ! Maybe I could live in the inner city..."

Tang Ling looked at him strangely, "You're drunk."

"No ! I'm serious !" the young man

"Yes, you are. Do you know how much investments you need to meet the basic requirements of a hunter. Strength and money ! Even strong men in Black Tiger aren't qualified, maybe the boss is but your physical fitness doesn't meet the requirements. Second, you need money to buy equipment! Guns, bows, traps... You need at least one of them and the cheapest cost 100 at the very least. Just to let you know, it's at least two years of saving; that is if you stop drinking. You may also need health supplements and vitality booster from the pharmacy and..."

"But Tang Ling ! If I'm lucky..." Ducke interrupted.

"Shut up ! Let me finish. Hunting is like gambling but the stakes are much higher than you think. It needs a lot of preparations, it's luck in every moves. Luck to track, luck to aim and shoot and luck to loots. This is a common proverb from experienced hunters in the industry, you need luck to locate and find tracks, you need luck to slay it without any complications and you need luck for the loot you gain can offset the money burnt."

"OK. OK. I didn't just get this idea from being just drunk. If I can't do it, 'might as well give it to you" Ducke touched his pocket and got out a green card with silver contours.

Looking at the card, Tang Ling's almost popped off !

Boa Bao Access Card !

Despite its silly name, this card was the lowest cla.s.s card to get pa.s.s the gate (exceptions like hunter licence not included) and the only function of it was to pa.s.s the gate at anytime the user wants. Costing a thousand credits, the owner could leave the city at anytime and could take with him two more persons.

This card had authoritative power than a simple hunter licence. The licence required the hunter to return in three days or a fee would be charged; around 25 credits a day with a limit of 10. It also cost 5 credits for each use and the Ben Gorge a.s.sociation would get a 2.5% of the reward and would also benefit to the fact that they would buy cheaper (10%-25%) the goods and sell higher to the rich since it was the only Hunter a.s.sociation in the city. Of course, this practise wouldn't work if it was in any other inner cities and some special cities where there would be compet.i.tion with other groups. In fact, the Ben Gorge wouldn't even dare to set such unfair rules if it wasn't the fact that they were in a outer city and that the mayor and the officials silently accepted these unfair treatments to the hunters with bribes; the Brokang Empire had laws that punished such behaviours and doing so could lead to judicial pursuit against them but n.o.body even tried to denounce these conditions. The a.s.sociation could banish them but also stop the complaint before it get out of the city; it was useless and it was an act that have no avantages but only disadvantages no matter how you looked at it.

That's why this card was so beneficial to hunters as it would allow them to keep the profit to them without sharing to anyone. Unfortunately, only rich people could get them, it cost a thousand credits to get it and middle cla.s.s people or hunters didn't have enough money to get it, they needed money to pay their daily necessities and food and the only function of this card was to pa.s.s the gate which wasn't worth the trouble getting it.

"Hmmm... Ducke, this thing has some value to it. It cost a thousand but the retail price is like 30 credits. Not worth much."

Yeah. Despite its use, only hunters would buy it but it was very difficult to see them. Most of them were very mysterious and finding them in the city is like finding a needle in a haystack. Heck, even if a hunter was standing before him, he wouldn't even recognize him !

Ducke sighed : "Knew it."

They finally agreed to let Tang Ling keep it just in case.

Now this agreement would let Tang Ling exit the city without much problems.

The guard definitely knew that this card wasn't his but he still let him go after he saw the card. It wasn't his job scope anyways. Why bother putting himself in a difficult position, at the most, he will be accused of negligence and that's it. It was no worth the trouble.

The guard pushed the lever and slowly but surely the gate opened, revealing the outside world to Tang Ling...
