Author's Note.

With A Single Kiss, I ran the risk of painting myself into two different corners at the same time. The first corner, as you can probably guess, is that being a child welfare attorney myself, I made a.s.sumptions about how well most readers understand the courtroom and the foster care system. To the extent I overexplained a legal concept or underexplained it, I do apologize. The courtroom is in a sense home to me, and it's hard to see home through the eyes of a neighbor. If you have questions about the legal aspects of the story, drop me a line and I'll answer as best I can.

The second corner any novel can end up in when legal details are involved is that my small, relatively collegial jurisdiction in western Maryland may do things much differently from anywhere else. Though most foster care law is based on federal statutes, states and even counties vary greatly in their application of that law. Then, too, the law changes significantly over time.

Maryland, for example, was slow to accept the concept of open adoptions, and has waffled regarding how children can be placed with fictive kin (shirttail cousins, to use my mom's term), or supported by foster care after age eighteen.

Specific legal aspects of the story may not exactly match up with your experience of the law, but I hope the love story between Hannah and Trent and their families (and the unicorns) works well enough for you that as you read their story, the legalities remain mere details.
