43 Call To Damien

She eyed the phone and Vixen, his smile worrying her, "what do you want in return?"

"You know the usual," Vixen grinned.

"Anything for entertainment huh?" Regan chuckled.

She stared at the blank screen of the phone before turning it on with her shaky fingers. Slowly, she swiped across the screen and stared at the phone icon on his homescreen. Her fingers trembled as she clicked on it, all of her courage she had seemed to crumble into pieces as she clicked on the icon and stared at the dial b.u.t.tons. She pressed the numbers and revealed a number that was embedded so deep into her heart, it was an anthem. The call b.u.t.ton stared at her, teasing her to call up the downfall of her life, to bring up emotions that should have been left behind, to talk to someone she had been yearning to see.

Vixen watched as she wavered. Looks like this birdie needs a little push, he thought to himself. He leaned in close to Regan, invading her personal s.p.a.ce.

"What are yo-" Regan began, pulling away from him.

Vixen locked eyes with her, distracting her with his eyes and reached for her hands, tightly squeezing it first before taking one of her fingers and pressing down on the call b.u.t.ton. "Oops."

"What the?" Regan gasped realizing what he had done, "what are you doing? Why would you do that? I wasn't ready yet!"

"So? If he is as sneaky as you make him out to be, he would have gotten rid of the phone and won't even pic-"

"h.e.l.lo?" A voice rang out from the phone silencing the two, "who is it?"

Regan's eyes widened as she realized who was on the phone, "Damien," her words slipped out hoa.r.s.ely, her throat clogging up and tears stinging her eyes. He picked up, he is speaking to me… my Dammy… She looked away from the phone and locked eyes with Vixen who stared at her with an incomprehensible expression. Was he teasing her? Was he mad? Sad?

Hurry up and start the drama, Vixen mouthed.

Ha, Regan thought to herself, that was the Vixen she knew. She almost let out a chuckle as she wiped her tears away.

"Regan?" Damien called out, "is that you?"

Regan turned back to the phone, remembering the person on the line, "that's right, it's the person whose life you destroyed."

"Regan…I-" Damien began.

"Don't even try it," Regan replied, stopping him.

"I'm sorry, it was for your safety," Damien sighed.

"Ha," Regan laughed, her chuckle forced and trembled as if with just a little push they would crumble to dust, "All for me? What a lie."

"You don't get it, Regan. You can't get it and you can't know," Damien argued, "if you hate me, I honestly don't care, as long as you are fine."

"What do you think this is? A drama? Do you expect me to accept my faith when I'm the one stuck in this h.e.l.l that holds me?" Regan broke, her voice slowly rose as tears started to fall again, "do you think my life is yours to play with? Is this a cruel joke on me?"

"I HATE THIS TOO!! Do you think I want to do this to you?" Damien growled.

"Apparently yes, seeing as I am here," Regan laughed.

"Regan… if I didn't feel bad or want any more connection with you, don't you think I would have gotten rid of this phone too?" Damien asked, "I still love you."

"Alright don't lie, this is not the time to be wrapping another one of your blindfolds around my eyes right now, Damien," Regan sighed. Despite her shutdown to his words, a part of her wanted to believe him… to wait for him again for him to come back. Maybe he was saying the truth, maybe he didn't mean to do it and still misses her...but that was a long stretch. Making her kill others? Almost killing her with a gun by another person's hand, not looking for her and labeling her as dead to the public… those were things that couldn't be done, they were incomprehensible acts for someone who claims they love the person after doing it.

"Regan, seriously I still love you. I know I may sound unbelievable.."

"So you know,"

"And maybe even like a liar,"

"Looks like you know that you were wrong, what are you trying to prove again?"

"But, I honestly still love you," Damien pressed, "all of my actions were for a reason, they were going to protect you in the long run, so maybe I took the wrong turn but I really meant to do good. I.. can't tell you why I did them, or what is going on right now, but just hearing your voice really makes me feel happy. Knowing that you are somewhere safe right now is the highlight of my week."

"No.. stop lying," Regan refuted her voice wavering as her heart thumped harder and tears started to fall again. Could she believe him, was he right? Did he really miss her? And what if he was right, when could she leave? Could she go to him now? Slowly the walls around Regan were breaking as she began to believe his words, to accept that he may in fact still love her… to believe that maybe all he took was the wrong turn when trying to do something for her. "You made me like this, you put me in this h.e.l.l, you frowned my voice out and locked me away. You… ruined my life, and used me to take the life's of my best friends."

"I'm not lying right now, I could never lie about my feelings for you Regan, I really miss you," Damien continued his voice barely above a whisper as he spoke.
