She slipped on her coat, fidgeting, and shoved her hands into her pockets. The corner of what felt like an envelope scratched her knuckles. She pulled it out. Mom and Dad was scrawled on the front, and she tugged at Rocco's shirt.
He turned from crowd-watching, bottleneck-waiting duty, and she waggled it in front of him.
"What is that?"
"I don't know."
"Well, open it."
She did, unfolding the paper, and he read over her shoulder.
Dear Mom and Dad, My entire life, you pushed me past what I thought I could accomplish. Today, all that paid off. The best of the best. That's been drilled into me. By you. By the US Army. And now by my peers. Special Forces. Thank you for everything you gave, sacrificed, believed in, and fought for to get me here because I know I didn't do it alone.
Love, Jacin Arrio Savage Jacin Arrio. His name meant a warlike healer, and it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Their baby gave her peace, healed her from the inside out, and as he turned into a man, was everything she'd ever hoped for. Exactly like his father. That was it. She was done. Her heart seized up. Her throat ached. Happy tears spilled down her cheeks. When she looked at her husband, even he was a little misty. That'd be her secret. No one as tough and manly as Rocco would want that slipping out. Instead, she jumped up and kissed him again.
"Ay Dios mio," he teased, and it never got old.
The crowd started moving, and it dragged her attention to the door. "Let's go."
Surrounded by her family, hunting for their graduate, Caterina beamed. A minute later, they were in an open area and searching, searching- Jace.
She pointed, and the entire brood moved with the precision of a tactical team. Their daddy had taught them well. They moved swiftly through the crowd, and their target was surrounded. Her baby boy. All grown up. The boys slapped backs and punched chests. Roc jumped in too, but she hung back, watching all their proud excitement.
After all the testosterone emoting she could handle, Cat pushed into the knot of Savage men and grabbed her boy.
"I am so proud of you," she whispered but knew he already knew. It was her favorite thing to say. That boy might've been built like a cinder block wall like his daddy and was a feisty fighter like his mama, but he was something special on his own.
"I wouldn't be here without you and Dad." Jacin kissed her cheek. "I love you, Momma."
One of his brothers grabbed him, and before walking off with his brothers, he hugged Rocco. All their boys would follow similar paths, and the admiration they had for Jacin was a testament to how they lived their lives: strong and loved.
Rocco stood behind her, letting her lean against him as he always did. His hands cupped her hips, his chin fit down in the nook of her shoulder and neck. "You did good, Kitten."
"We did good."
They did perfect.
THE END.
