Hearing the servant's explanation, the Furen's face turned white.

"Go! Search for her! No matter what, you must search for her!! That child!! How could she act mischievous right now? We are not in our Fu[1]! How could she leave and wander around Baili residence? Baili Furen walked forward and asked.

The Furen smiled and shook her head.

"It's nothing."

Baili Furen returned the smile.

"I thought that you have encountered some problem."

Ling Furen's eyes darkened but did not say anything.

"Ling Furen, where is Jing'er? I have not seen your daughter ever since she had come to age."

Hearing Baili Furen's question, Ling Furen sighed.

"That child, seems like she left the banquet and has wandered around the residence. I hope Baili Furen will not mind. Ai."

Without a choice, Ling Furen told Baili Furen the truth.

Hearing Ling Furen's ashamed tone, Baili Furen laughed.

"No worries. That is normal for a young child like her. Why won't we go and admire the moon too? We might encounter Jing'er on our way to the lotus pond."

Ling Furen nodded. Her heart calmed when she found out that Baili Furen was not offended.

The Furens and their daughters, with Baili Furen on the lead, went to the lotus pond at the center of the garden. While walking, the females were talking with each other merrily.

"Help!! Help!!"

A tender voice screamed and a pet.i.te young woman ran towards the group. She was wearing a pink Hanfu which was able to emphasize her innocent face. Unfortunately, her face was currently expressing a terrified expression.

"Jing'er! Where have you been?! And what's wrong?? Look at you! You are running like a commoner!! Mind your manners!! You are a proper young lady!!"

Ling Furen angrily rebuked her daughter. She felt ashamed due to her daughter's action and could not help but reprimand her in front of everyone. The young lady did not care that her mother was angry at her. She cried pitifully and said, "There's a murder!! Someone was screaming, cry for help over there!! Mother, this child heard it!"

Everyone's face s.h.i.+fted when they heard the young lady's words. Even Baili Furen's eyes darkened. She moved towards the young girl and asked, "Jing'er, are you sure?"

The young lady, Jing'er nodded her head.

"Baili Furen, this lady is sure. Tis lady has heard it! There must be someone plotting murder inside this residence!"

"Jing'er, shut it!"

Ling Furen immediately pulled her daughter's arm, pinching it to give warning. This matter was not about the life and death of a person but the face of the owner.

Baili residence was where Duke Baili resided. A duke's residence was infiltrated effortlessly by a.s.sa.s.sins. If a word goes out, one would think that the security inside the residence was useless. It would affect the Baili family's reputation.

If Duke Baili could not even protect his own estate, how could he protect the country?
