3 Chapter 3:

He stared back at me, looking completely exhausted but a little curious about me and what I had just said.

"Do you know me?" He asks with a hint of amus.e.m.e.nt, his entire mood lightening up in a second when my grip on the door tightened.

His dark red hair was short and crisp, looking almost like a businessman but at the same times dangerous. The green in his eyes seemed so gentle and kind that it made me wonder who in G.o.d's name wanted this man to die.

The loose white t-s.h.i.+rt he was wearing hide all his muscles and broad shoulders, but you could see that he wasn't a tiny man. He was wearing a dark pair of jeans looking clean and sharp making my nails lengthen a little bit, digging them into the wall.

Why was I reacting like this? What the h.e.l.l?

"No," I answer after a minute, embarra.s.sed for not answering quicker, hoping he didn't expect me of any ill intentions.

His lips twitched a little bit, rising into a c.o.c.ky smirk that all men seemed to have when something was going well. Which was a little shocking.

Was this the same man I was supposed to kill?

"I am in charge of this small town and thought I would introduce myself to the new people. I'm Zaiver Vera. I hope we can get to know each other better." He held his hand out to me as I stared at it for a second then looked back up at his face, utterly confused.

Some female phobia, boss.

I s.h.i.+fted my facial expression, giving him a sympathetic smile and leaning against the door frame.

"Sorry. I don't shake random strangers hands." I deny outright causing him to c.o.c.k his eyebrow at me, a little taken aback. Don't look suspicious. Don't look suspicious.

"But we are friends now aren't we? We know each other's names-"

"No, we don't." I flatly said, picking at my nails while he rested his hand on the exterior right beside my head.

"What's your name, sweetheart?" He asked as if I wasn't ignoring him.

"Well, it's not sweetheart, to begin with," I comment not bothering to answer his question when he smirked at me with a curious glance. His stare almost seeming mysterious but in a bad way.

"Alright then, sweetheart." His smirk seemed to only anger me more while he peeked at his watch and sighed. "Is your brother here? I wanted to offer the both of you to the cookout next week." Zavier offers with a genuine look making me roll my eyes and cross my arms over my chest.

How did he know about Ajax?

"Sorry but Ajax is not here right at the moment. He is... busy with women c.r.a.p." I wave my hand off in a nonchalant way as Zavier rose his eyebrow at me.

"Are you here alone?" He questions, suddenly very curious about my words.

"Why." I simply state rather asking, not bothering to be polite. Strangely my voice caused him to smile a little bit.

"I was just going to offer you some dinner. I haven't eaten yet and I a.s.sume you wouldn't mind a free meal if one arose." He points out as I shrugged a little bit, not sure whether to be offended or shocked by his accusation of free food.

I mean... If someone offers free food why not.

Plus this will gain his trust.

Though I'm not sure if this was a trick since he does, in fact, have a female phobia.

"Nice of you to offer. But I'm not in the mood to be poisoned. And sorry, but we have already agreed to go to the cookout with the elderly couple next door. Nice meeting you though." I smiled sweetly, closing the door in his face not even bothering to hear his next comment.

My mind wandered around for a second, thinking about how I could use this interaction to my advantage and how I could totally lure the man out of his hiding spot.

Ideas and thoughts roamed around my head while a s.a.d.i.s.tic smile grew and grew. Only leaving me thoughts of blood covering my hands.

His blood.

〰〰〰

Knock. Knock.

I dropped the file before closing the folder and placing it into the desk once again, with an exhausted sigh.

Finally, he was back.

I swear he needs to not always spend the night with a woman.

One of these days, I'm going to have to bury another body and I'm not in the mood to do that again. It wasn't fun the first time, but he never learns.

Plus I needed to go over the research that I've done on the victim and the interaction we had earlier.

I walked down the stairs calmly, s.n.a.t.c.hing a knife from the stand and holding it in my palm in case I felt the urge to stab that stupid kid in the shoulder. He needed to learn a lesson anyway.

"Ajax. I am going to literally kick your "

"Hey, sweetheart." Zavier grinned down at me as if I didn't outright reject him earlier when I hide the knife in my back pocket and narrowing my eyes at him.

"What are you doing back here?" I ask, my voice low with a snarl that was supposed to threaten him but his smile only seemed to grow at my harshness.

"I brought take out." He lifted his hand and revealed a few bags from various restaurants as I lightened my glare.

I am a little hungry...

"What is it you want?" I question to him, not used to others treating me this way and if they did. They wanted something from me. That's how this world is.

"Can't I just welcome a pretty lady like yourself?" He answers with another question when I went back to narrowing my eyes at him with a low scoff.

"Pretty lady my a.s.s," I mutter under my breath, for a second forgetting he was a werewolf.

"You are. Don't tell yourself anything but that." He growls seriously as I stared at him a little stunned by the sudden forcefulness in his voice. When I didn't say anything, he relaxed his shoulders and gave me a small gentle smile. "Can I come in sweetheart? This food will get cold." He said in a lighter tone as I blinked once.

Then twice.

What were his real intentions?

Clearly, he wanted something from me since he had come back after I practically told him to f.u.c.k off.

I wasn't sure whether it would be a good idea or not to allow him to come inside or not, but the one thing that was pus.h.i.+ng me to let him inside was the fact that I had to get close to him.

For my master and partner.

I gave him a small, strained smile and opened the door wide enough for him to enter.

"Fine. But the only reason I'm letting you in is because I smell some Chinese food." And the fact I had to kill you in cold blood and I had to get close to you.

He smirked, giving me a genuine smile as I noticed his green eyes sparkling at me. I s.h.i.+fted my eyes away from him and turned away to walk back into my home.

"Don't let the heat get inside. It's to d.a.m.n humid and I have the ac running." I waved my hand, moving into the kitchen to grab a few plates while he closed the front door behind him.

"I like your home, sweetheart. Though I sense you don't care for this feminine style." He comments, following slowly but admiring all of Ajax's knickknacks that I vow to throw away one day.

"Very true. I'm not a fan of the novelties, they're my brother's. He's very obsessed with his toys. I feel like I've been babysitting him non-stop." I point out with an exhausted sigh before he chuckled and set the food on the counter beside me.

"Seems like you are a good sister." He says when I dropped the plate making a loud crash against the counter. "Are you alright?" His voice seemed more cautious while I sucked in a breath of air and nodded stiffly.

"Yeah. Just... No one has said that." No one's ever said anything like that to me even with everything I've ever done. Yet this man who I didn't even know said that to me even though Ajax and I weren't true siblings.

I wasn't sure how to react to his genuine kindness.

If only I didn't have to kill him...

"Well, sweetheart. You better get used to it since I have a fantastic charm that makes all the ladies fall for me." He winks at me with a goofy smile nearly making me burst into laughter at the sight.

"So stupid." I scoff and gave him a plate, digging through the bags to pull out a few of the boxes of food. "The name is Faye. Faye Walker." I finally told him, knowing he wouldn't gain anything from knowing my true name since there would be no information on my true past except for my 'teaching history.'

Though my surname is not Walker.

That's such a boring surname.

His smile brought me out of my thoughts when I reached into a draw for a few utensils.

"Faye... That's a lovely name, sweetheart." He smirks c.o.c.kily at me as my att.i.tude s.h.i.+fted from the kindness to the annoyed one from before.

"Just grab some food. I'm going to grab us a few beers." I growl at him though it only seemed to make him laugh, aggravating me more.

I will take delight in killing this a.s.shole.

〰〰〰

I heard the car pulling into the driveway and lifted my head to glance at my phone that revealed a few calls from Ajax.

Zaiver was using the restroom for a moment as I made sure he wasn't snooping around my home as normal people would usually do. I will have to do a thorough check in that restroom once he leaves so I don't get surprised by anything he could have put in there.

"Hey! Who's in the driveway?!" Ajax hollered from the door, closing it behind him and coming through the kitchen and seeing the food on the counter. "Are you on your period and order out a lot? You even have two plates at the table. d.a.m.n woman." He curses making me narrow my eyes at him in a deadly way.

"We have a gu-"

"Hi. Nice to meet you. I am Zaiver Vera, the mayor of this small town. I brought some food over for the pretty woman. You are welcome to join us if you like." Zaiver stepped out at the wrong time when Ajax's eyes s.h.i.+fted a dark black while I jumped to my feet and shoved him out of the kitchen out of sight.

"Sorry. Give me a second with him. He's very..." I thought for an excuse for his behavior. "He is very sensitive around men if you get what I am saying," I said, noting that he was scared of men as he nodded in understanding.

"I'll give you some s.p.a.ce. I could leave if you l-"

"No!" I shout in instinct, shocked at the volume of my voice. "I mean... No. It's fine let me speak with him just for a moment." Zavier nodded, a little pleased with my answer when I pushed Ajax out the door and outside.

"What the f.u.c.k?! You do realize what-"

"Shut it. You are going to deal with this irrational fear of yours or you can go back to the bar." I quoted his fear with the job, knowing that the Alpha would be able to hear our conversation.

"Are you serious right now?! This is not the time for me to 'get over my f.u.c.king fear'!" He used his hands to quote his fear making me smirk devilishly and grab his collar forcing him to look me in the eye.

"You are living in my home and if I want someone over then you better not interfere. You understand me, dear brother?" I snarled under my breath, daring him to challenge my words when he gritted his teeth and looked away from my burning stare.

"Fine sister." He said sister with so much disdain that it nearly made me laugh. With a satisfied smirk, I released his s.h.i.+rt and straightened the t-s.h.i.+rt and yoga pants I was in.

"I'm going back inside. Do not interrupt me unless it is something important. Got it." I snapped my finger, walking back inside after giving him one last s.a.d.i.s.tic look and saying, "This for both of us." I told him seriously, leaving him outside with a gaping look.

Done bothering with a moody Ajax, I stepped back into the kitchen and noticed that Zavier was admiring a picture from Lita and Tommy. Both of them were on good terms that day so they both worked together on the little picture of the three of us.

I wouldn't admit it, but I enjoyed having something that someone has given me. Most of the time I am the one that has to get things for myself but this was one of the only gifts I've received ever since I joined the a.s.sa.s.sins.

"You like that?" I question, forcing myself to sound friendly and gentle so he was broken out of his thoughts completely.

"Yeah. Where'd you get this from?" He asks truly curious about the work of a five-year-old when I stood beside him.

"I got it from one of my students. They made it for me." I told him sounding like the perfect and ideal woman he would want in his life. Perfect for my cover.

"You're a teacher?" He says a little surprised when I chuckled humorlessly and nodded.

"Yeah. A kindergarten teacher. If you ask me they are a bunch of brats sometimes." I said truthfully, not really caring since we all knew it was true.

"I bet they aren't that bad." He a.s.sures while I glanced over at him with an unamused look.

"I was talking about the parents," I inform making him burst into laughter at my insult towards the parents. Pretty much the insult towards his family.

The corner of my eye caught Ajax sneaking upstairs with an angry look on his face but at the moment, I couldn't go check on him. He just needs to be a big boy right now.

After a moment, Zavier collected himself and looked down at me with unknown emotion that I wasn't sure how to label it with. We stared at each other for a moment before a loud slam resonated from upstairs.

I groaned loudly, threading my hand through my hair as Zaiver chuckled and finally blinked breaking our stare.

"I guess I should start heading out." He told me when I went to say something but he stopped me. "Deal with your brother. I'm sure we'll be meeting again Faye." Zavier said awkwardly before brus.h.i.+ng past me and leaving me in the kitchen.

"Hey." I turned around to face him as his hand rested on the doork.n.o.b. His lightening green seemed pleased about something but I ignored his reaction. "Thanks for the meal. I'll buy next time." I said, for a smile and watching him leave the house with a grateful nod.

Not a moment later, a knife from above came down towards me.
