7 『Walls』

The Village which to Jack's surprise was much closer than he thought it would be, seemed to be just as Teetle had described. It was on the very edge of the Forest, which he learned from listening to little tidbits conversations, was called the Great Forest of Tob.

However before they could leave the safety of cover from beneath the woodlands trees, Jack raised his right hand, bringing his followers to an immediate halt.

"There is no wall around this Village..." He muttered quietly to himself. As he knew that a wall would be necessary for a place far outside society's protection, he was rather skeptical of getting closer to the village.

This place was completely unguarded by the Kingdom. He saw no guards, soldiers or even Knights. Just peasants moving about their daily routines. As his eyes traced back over towards the back of Nemu's head, he raised a brow. Seeing how cheery she was being with her sister. It felt like this place would be one to protect and he hated this feeling.

Why? Because when one believes they should protect something, it makes its p.r.o.ne to be in danger.

Big brown or black eyes drew people in, made them want to protect them. Big blue eyes, made one stand back in awe. While Green eyes were entrancing and sometimes considerably rare, small black eyes were intimidating and capable of turning a person into an outcast.

Of course, the feeling didn't just come from eyes alone. It was that pseudo-innocence that child exhibited, how she had haphazardly referred to him as Dragon-san.

She hadn't even been all that much afraid of him, which amused him.

Someone who seemed so weak, so small and nimble was able to remain standing before him.

Jack's amethyst eyes were abnormal for a human, while violet eyes alone were also considerably rare, they could easily enchant others with just their beauty.

Just as the two girls were reaching the perimeter of the Village, Nemu glanced back one more time whilst holding her sisters hand. Her eyes widened, her mouth fallen agape, Jack had become visible by the edge of the forest, a smug look on his face.

He had made her look like a fool. Like a child who had an over reactive imagination, all in front of her sister just moments ago.

"Are you sure you should be showing yourself, Jack-sama?" Alfred asked with a brow raised, the three Guards remaining invisible as they watched on.

Jack nodded slightly as he watched the girl tug on her older sister from a distance. He turned away from the Village, his back to the peasantry as he began to walk away.

"Haha… What is it now, Nemu?" Enri turned her head to look down at her little sister, a smile across her lips as she felt the little tugs.

Wordlessly, Nemu who was jumping up and down slightly, pointed towards the forest.

Enri blinked several times and looked at the edge of the woodlands, just in time to see the back of a man's head. White hair, dark skin and monotone clothes with a strange sheen to them. Her lips parted, she didn't panic, but she was of course curious of who the individual was... But at the moment she was about to raise her voice to get his attention Jack vanished, as if he had never been.

"See! See I told you!" Nemu full of mirth laughed out loud, her little white boots pounding the gra.s.s beneath her feet, her lips refusing to stop grinning.

Enri giggled at her little sister and nodded, "I believe you, haha, lets go see mom and dad, okay?"

Sometime later Jack would be reentering the City through the Eastern Entrance, which while he had yet to be camouflaged and altered to hide it better. Of course however, it hardly needed to be hidden.

He just wanted to be meticulous and the last thing he needed was an army being able to fit through the mouth of the hole. Letting out a soft enthusiastic sigh, despite his previous feelings, the world outside was relatively peaceful at first glance. He was just hoping the thorough glance wasn't going to prove the first horribly wrong.

As he looked upon the Waste City, he was quick to notice that the trash and material polluting the city was being cleaned up. The Honor Guard, and the sp.a.w.ned beings, were all collecting the material and recycling it through the Exchange Box into golden coins within the Castle.

A small smile remained shallowly printed across his lips. It wasn't a true smile, but it was at least pleasant to look at.

Their invisibility had since worn off by the time they made it to the front steps leading towards the castle's plaza. A ma.s.sive, flat, empty area which could be used as a market place should this place become largely inhabited.

An idea coming across his mind almost immediately.

Why didn't he offer peasants from that Frontier Village a place to stay rather than out there? While it would take some time to garner trust between them, he was sure it'd work. It was definitely a greater idea than to risk being attacked by waves of monsters, right? Though thinking about it, he didn't see a single monster outside during his short walk.

Jack placing his thumb on his chin as his index finger rested curled beneath it, he let out a thoughtful hum.

The ideas to sift through were immense, complex. Yet he knew he had to evaluate the territory he was currently in. It didn't seem contested, that was good. No wars in the area would mean he could profit from gaining information and using it to his advantage.

First this village, he wanted to learn more about it and its people, their customs and their culture. Learning about the culture, their language, would allow him to manipulate them much easier.

To bring them to his side, he needed to treat them far better than their own sovereign. One idea in his mind which immediately surfaced when he had seen the village, was a wall. Being on the edge of the forest meant that they could be attacked from all sides. An ambush from coordinated monsters and beasts, or that of another Kingdom.

Though he had a good enough look to see a small path leaving the general area and leading farther south, which he could only a.s.sume went towards civilization.

If he checked in with Teetle and Doodle, that meant he'd learn more about the layout of whatever Kingdom this village may be from, but he already gave them a task.

Glancing up from his thoughts, he noticed that Anika and the other two were still walking with him. "Oh? You guys are still with me are you…?" He let out an eerily friendly chuckle.

"Ah… Yes, yes we." Anika visibly tried not to laugh, keeping her words tight and orderly.

Jack just shrugged softly. "You two can leave me, I am in need of only one escort while in the City." His eyes flickered to the two males than back to Anika.

Alfred and Jarod nodded, "As you say Jack-sama, we are at your disposal whenever needed." They gave their cliche speech and left the two alone, walking off talking to one another in low voices.

Once they were gone, he looked over Anika for a moment, taking in the form of her uniform before looking ahead towards the Mantis who entered the Plaza. "Ah, Daniki." his eyes traveled towards the Guards behind the insect. "I see everything has gone well?"

The large insect nodded its head, making clicking and clacking sounds in approval of his words.

"Good to know," Jack closed on eye looking up at him, "Is the Production Plant capable of being operational?" The insect once more nodded its head, this time only clicking its mandibles together.

Daniki was a very efficient individual, one who could take on multiple tasks and finish them quickly, one by one. Though he was curious, did he get the orders to fix up the entrance yet?

Jack glanced towards where there was once a wide entrance into the city, only to notice it had indeed gotten much smaller. Now an army couldn't fit through the opening, but just one person instead.

"Ah… You did the thing, didn't you." Jack muttered quietly under his breath before looking to the insect who appeared all to eager to please, nodding its head and flexing its mouth.

"You can a.s.sist the others in cleaning and appraising the resources found in the city. If there is anything unique, try to save it from being turned to gold." Jack ordered with a light nod and watched as the ma.s.sive insect scurried off as the Guards who had once joined them, begin marching inside the castle.

Anika remained standing beside Jack, her hands resting flatly at her sides. "Jack-sama, would you..."

She was suddenly cut off when Silva appeared abruptly, landing in from of Jack from a high position. "You have returned, Jack-sama!" She seemed to be excited, her hand on her face. It seemed she was still partially in a Chuuni-mode, as she had one red eye peering up at him through her two spread fingers.

However immediately she stood up and folded her hands behind her back, somewhat startling herself.

Laughing silently through his nose, Jack raised a brow at her. "Yes.. Yes I have, and I see you've been..." Jack tilted his head slightly, "Practicing… your acting skills?"

"Y-yes!" Silva tripped over her words for a moment as she was slowly calming down, becoming composed and reserved once more. Her chin tilted up as she grinned casually in his direction.

"Anything to report?"

"The North West Exit is closed, but there was no sign of collapse. Its as if the terrain just closed off on it naturally, Jack-sama. Is there anything more you'd like us to do?"

"Prospecting, while we are collecting resources and recycling the city's waste, I would like to ask that those not given a task look into any nearby mineral deposits." Jack nodded lightly as he took a step back from the girl, taking in the plaza once more. "And perhaps a study of this world's beastiary."

"Of.. Of course." Silva nodded her head frantically as she kept note of everything he had said.

"Until then, I'm going to rest my eyes for a while and think things through," his eyes drifted over towards Anika, who's eyes were s.h.i.+fting up and down his personage as he was the one and only ViP.

"As expected of our Master," Silva bowed and paced backward before heading off towards the Throne room in order to project further orders to those under her command.

After a few seconds had gone by, Jack would then follow in her footsteps, heading into the castle. However instead of going to the Throne Chambers, he decided to make his way up to the Player Quarters. An area of the castle on the same floor.

It took him a short period of time to make it there, as he used his Guild Ring to teleport himself and Anika to the Ninth Floor without any further complications.

Once he was in the corridor lined with over fifty doors several meters apart, he began to pad quietly without a sound. His eyes drifting over the names printed on each door.

He imagined their faces from offline meetings and online video-based chatrooms. They were all from different backgrounds. Some of them were withdrawn from society, whilst others were contributing members. He stopped however the moment he was about to pa.s.s Lala's door, and just stood there.

"Marry me..." Jack never thought of marrying someone because of who he was. He never saw himself in a relations.h.i.+p after he had lost so much and felt destroyed as a result.
