2 The Treatmen

Completely worried, Nora's mother, Laurene, cried with all her might while the doctor facing her stayed silent. With a complicated gaze, he watched this middle-aged woman without knowing the proper words he should say. It's not that he never faced this kind of situation, but it' s never easy to crush the hopes of the family. Arriving at the scene, a man with a face void of any expression saw his wife totally panicked and went straight to her side. Embracing her, he turned his cold eyes towards the doctor.

"How is she ?"

s.h.i.+vering slightly at the chilling voice, the pract.i.tioner could feel the cold sweat on his back, and he couldn't help but step back a bit. Organizing his thoughts, he gulped awkwardly.

"She... is badly hurt and still under surgery. Right now we..."

"How badly ?"

The doctor didn't dare to look at the scary face of the man before him.

"She has multiple fractures on her thorax, pelvis, and her left leg. There is internal bleeding and some of her organs are failing. But... Her head is the most affected. She's in a coma."

Laurene became deathly pale while starring fixedly at her husband, Arthur. This typical workaholic who always keep this strong armour in front of the other politicians clenched his teeth and took a deep breath.

"When can she wake up ?"

"We don't know if she will... be able to wake up."

Feeling weak in her legs, Laurene stared at the doctor with wide eyes filled with tears.

"Is she dying ?"

The doctor stayed silent again. Suddenly, In this desperate atmosphere, Arthur made his wife sit on a nearby chair and went out of the hospital. Right at the entrance, he took his phone out and composed a number.

"The serum 027, is it efficient ?"

"If I knew the great Rainfrew would feel interested in medical research, I would've prepared a little speech."

The voice was filled with irony, making the politician more perturbated.

"Is it working or not ?"

"We just stopped the tests on animals and we are starting the test on humans. For now, the lives of the five patients aren't in danger anymore. Their organs and bones are healing. Slowly, but at least there is hope for them."

"Put a sixth patient in that research."

"Oh, asking for a favor ? And who might that be ?"

"Eleonora Rainfrew, my daughter."
