38 The Mainframe

We took a second to reload our weapons and then moved to explore the area. It seemed like this area used to be some kind of lab but, when the Brotherhood left they took everything important so there wasn't much of use.

What I did find that was useful though were Pulse grenades two of them just sitting on a shelf as well as a couple Pulse mines and more grenades inside a safe. They would be extremely hand once we run into more robots.

The way only way forward was through a closed door on the other side of the catwalk. It led to another tunnel like the ones under Repconn and from listening carefully we could hear another Sentrybot rolling around inside.

We carefully made our way deeper into the tunnels being sure to avoid stepping on any of the junk lying around to avoid making noise. We came to the end of the tunnel and found an open door that was the source of the sounds we were hearing. I peaked around the corner and saw the Sentrybot about 50 feet down a hallway, so used VATS to accurately toss the grenade since I wasn't confident enough in my skills to do it without messing up. The grenade clattered by the Sentrybots treads as it rolled around to find the source of the noise.

"Warning, this is Private Property please leave now or be exterminated."

"Pzztz" it detonated into a blue bubble of sparks and electricity.

"W-warning, Violence detected" it sputtered "Self . . . Defense Protocol . . Initi . . . . . ated."

I hid back behind cover as it exploded and went into the hallway with Ratslayer drawn. Inside the hallways were several beds attached to the walls along with all kinds of personal effects like clothes, gla.s.ses, and books. It must have been where some of the Brotherhood members stay while they were here. The hall led to more cleared out labs and maintenance areas.

The hall led to another closed door, so we all got into cover while I opened it. Inside was another enormous room, It was criss crossed with more catwalks and was at least three stories deep.

"Down there" Boone said "as he moved to aim at something below us.

"There's a Mister Gutsy" Ca.s.s said as Boone fire a shot into it's eyestalks.

"Ahh! Foolish commie sc.u.m even blind you are no match for me!"

It was on the catwalks below us giving Ca.s.s a perfect shot with the Grenade Launcher. It was blown off the railing to the ground below as it fired a plasma blast that narrowly missed my head.

We decended to the bottom of the room and found even more lab equipment, as well as ma.s.sive pieces of machinery that I could'nt quite identify. Looking around I found some electronics sc.r.a.p I decided to take as well as a Repair magazine and some more Pulse grenades.

Moving on the next room we found was full of Protectrons deactivated inside their charging docks. I carefully deactivated the nearly invisible laser trip wire on the door leading out and we finally arrived at the elevator to take us to the top of the tower.

On the way up I laughed a little at the fact that elevator rides were just as awkward in a post apocolyptic future than they were in my world.

The elevator let us out into another giant room covered in equipment but, this one had a giant 1950's style supercomputer sitting in the middle of the room.

"I'm guessing that the mainframe" Ca.s.s deadpanned.

"Let's see what we're dealing with" I walked over and examined it. I was curious about this worlds computer technology and how they could create so many amazing things with computers that were basicaly bricks. I mean the ma.s.sive room sized computer in front of me barely had 2 gigs of ram, yet it was controlling a deathray that could fire from s.p.a.ce!

Even more insane was the fact that the entire thing was being powered by a tiny generator sitting on the floor. I knew it was broken and to get the mainframe working again I need to fix it. I started carefully taking it apart trying to find what the problem was. And the more of I saw the more I was astonished by just how advanced this little generator was, It was literaly the exact opposite of the giant piece of c.r.a.p the mainframe was.

It used lasers and miniturized super magnets to create enough pressure and heat to sustain nuclear fusion but, that wasn't what impressed me. The generatior actually absorbed the CO2 from the air and used the put the Carbon through a process called the carbon cycle which is basically an infinite loop the that turns Carbon into Nitrogen and then Oxygen and back again(This is a real thing). So the generator literally takes in Carbon Dioxide and lets out Nitrogen and Oxygen, instead of being bad for the environment it was actually good for it!

The problem ended up being much simpler than I expected it to be. The intake fan was clogged by a bunch of gunk, I wasn't sure exactly what it was but it only took a moment to clean it up and restart the generator which hummed to life.

"Alright" I said wiping the sludge from my hands "let's see if the mainframe is working now."
