Allan Nevins, The War for the Union (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1960), vol. 2, offers the most comprehensive survey of the period between the preliminary and the final Emanc.i.p.ation Proclamations. Though this account is fictional, it is abundantly doc.u.mented in Safire's "Underbook" of notes.
