258 Need To Adap

Remian had his hands full trying to figure out spatial magic and closing the Rift. He had family and friends to worry about, an invasion by high Tier ghosts, and a girlfriend who would most definitely worry about him if he disappeared on her.

Had this happened back when he was first starting out in the Frontier, Remian might actually have welcomed such a sudden adventure.

But now? Of all times, NOW?!

"I have to get back." Remian whispered. He summoned ambient mana…

Only to find that there wasn't any. There wasn't a single drop of mana in the air for as far as his senses could reach. Not even an inkling.

"What…?" Remian glanced up at the men flying on swords. "Then how…?"

Maybe it was some different form of magic? Something other than the Law Magic and the Chaos Magic that Remian had encountered before? Or maybe a different sort of power, like Psionics or Martial Energy.

Well, it didn't seem like Psionics. Remian couldn't sense a Psionic ripple for miles around. He could sense several minds, some of which seemed semi-conscious, others of which actually appeared hyper-conscious, if there was such a thing… but not actual Psionic power. At least, not in the vicinity.

Which meant… there were no Wilds around.

Was that in any way connected to the absence of mana?

A loud roar challenged his presumptions. There was shouting and a flurry of activity. Remian saw a group over in the distance drawing weapons and charging towards the roar.

Well, they certainly had some form of powerful beasts here, at any rate. Just not the Psionic-talented kind.

Also, this place smelled of herbs. Remian was quite familiar with herbs. George and Phoebe kept shoving the stuff down his throat. Out here, the smell of herbs was everywhere.

[Still not asking?] Death prompted.

[Fine. What world am I in?] Remian asked at last.

Death shrugged. [I'll give you a hint: it definitely isn't yours. There's a whole lot more Qi here. This is a world rich in martial energy.]

[But no mana, and no wilds…] Remian glanced about, seeing lots of swords and horses and the like, but little in way of technology. [And apparently not quite that advanced in science.]

There in the distance, five men were killing a young guy. They seized something from his waist pouch and then started fighting over the prize. Over the other hill, a band of uniformed soldiers watched with arms folded, doing nothing. n.o.body seemed to care. Their expressions said this was nothing unusual.

[Also not that advanced as a society, if killing people to rob them is the go-to means of gain.] Remian scratched his head. [I guess this is an archaic community. But at least there's people. Maybe someone knows a way I can go home.]

He glanced about, looking for a sign of a spatial crack or something similar to a Rift, but there was nothing like that in the air. There were a lot of symbols and circles and lines carved deeply into the floor under his feet, though. Some of those symbols looked like Sigils. Maybe they had a different form of magic around here?

First things first. He should try to communicate. Going over to the woman who was apparently sleeping, Remian called, "h.e.l.lo?"

There was no response. Not even a twitch.

Heavy sleeper, huh? Remian went over and tried to tap her shoulder.

Strangely, he came up against some sort of invisible barrier. "Huh?"

Frowning, he tried pus.h.i.+ng at it. It was like pus.h.i.+ng at a rock cliff. Not even a dent.

He tried kicking it. Still nothing.

With a sigh, Remian reached out to the woman using telepathy. [h.e.l.lo?]

The woman jumped up gasping, eyes wide. Then, she opened her mouth…

And splurted blood almost onto Remian's s.h.i.+rt.

"Uh… you okay?!" Remian blinked.

She glared at him, suddenly and inexplicably furious. Drawing a sword from her side, she lunged at him, screaming, "DIE!!"

"Okay, not a good start…" Remian yelped. "NOT a good start…!"

He ran for his life with the woman chasing him waving her sword while Death folded his arms by the side and laughed and laughed and laughed.

After The Incident, Mindy was in great distress. Her emotional state was so intense, even the Flame Emperor was affected.

For about half an hour afterward, Mindy in her Flame Shroud and Fiery Wings went into full blown panic mode with the Flame Emperor. All the Wilds and the Spectres gaped at the two 'fire birds', one big, one small, running around like headless chickens, much to the detriment of the unsuspecting lower-tier Spectres.

But this distraction gave the Tier 8 Spectre a golden opportunity to slip past the Flame Emperor's guard. It made a break for it…

[OH NO YOU DON'T!] an earth-shaking roar sounded and a ridiculously huge white tiger appeared in the sky, running over the clouds like it was solid ground.

[Wind Emperor!] the Wilds cheered at his arrival.

[FIGHT!] the Wind Emperor roared, and the battle raged on, heedless of Mindy and Chirpy running around.

But eventually, she had to tell them.

"Remian's gone!" Mindy blurted out. It was perhaps not the best way to barge in to the emergency council of war at KarGoth, but that was all that she could think of.

"Gone? What do you mean, gone?" George asked, blankly.

"He's dead?" Song Chen gasped.

"He's disappeared!" Mindy shook her head. "I don't know what happened to him!"

"Maybe he got vaporized. Annihilated to the point where there's nothing left." Marcus squinted. "I always did say his heroics were going to get him killed someday."

Mindy shook her head. "That's not it! It's like… he just vanished! POOF!"

"That's not good. We were counting on him to figure out how to seal the Rift. With him gone… we have a problem!" Song Chen grimaced.

"You think?" George asked, tearing at his hair. "How is he gone? People don't just POOF and vanis.h.!.+"

"Remian did!" Mindy insisted.

"If anyone could do it, he could." Song Chen mused. "Maybe it's on purpose. Maybe he's up to something."

"Or maybe he's dead." Marcus added.

"No way! He wouldn't die! Not like this!" George blurted.

"In any case, his disappearance changes things. Other than Remian, none of us have any clue how to solve the Spectre invasion. All we're doing now is defending while they attack from a place we can't reach. If this goes on long enough, sooner or later, we'll be worn down and destroyed."

"Remian said something about s.p.a.ce magic." Mindy remembered. "We have friends in Ecclesia's Magic School. Maybe they could ask their teachers and find out something."

"Or we can just ask the Priests to get help from the Church of Light." Max added.

"Let's do both." George grunted. "Keep asking around for help. I have a feeling we're going to need all we can get."
