Chapter 22 - Law

Qian Meigui's father was a lawyer back in the day. Song Rui only told her that her father—Qian Shanyuan—worked as a representative for scientists and was well-known for editing contracts and consulting with patients, families, and speaking with corporate.

He was someone that paralegals and judges trembled around because he was good at defending people, and bringing justice.

Qian Meigui felt excited. She could not believe that she had the opportunity to follow in her father's footsteps. When she went into University, Song Rui encouraged her to study in Business and Marketing, but she could not help but gravitate towards law. Without him knowing, she took several cla.s.ses in business law and criminology.

She spent the entire afternoon taking conference calls with lawyers and with biotechnicians about the product to obtain as much information to use for the case.

When employees began to turn the lights off their cubicles, Qian Meigui decided it was time to go home.

Qian Meigui decided to walk home as she wanted to feel the ice-cold breeze bite her skin. She felt more awake. I am following my father's footsteps, she thought.

She smiled to herself as she walked pa.s.sed Song Entertainment. The company was a building full of advertising posters of models, actors, and up-coming influencers. They promoted their films with ma.s.sive monitors that displayed trailers and teasers about future releases.

Qian Meigui exhaled, a breath of cold wind escaped her body against the night. She glanced up at the monitors and wondered what Song Sheng was doing, hoping that no one was giving him a rough time settling in.

The family disowned Song Rui, and out of retaliation, he established a company of his own. But Song Rui was meant to be a scientist, whereas his family only focused on the Entertainment Industry.

Qian Meigui walked for twenty minutes absent-mindedly as she thought about Song Sheng. Just yesterday, she was helping him in his apartment. And just this morning, she gave her a ride to work. Her face flushed at the image of his sculpted body. His body appeared to be crafted by some diety that blessed him with good-looks.

She recalled the lines and curves of muscle. Qian Meigui gasped at her thoughts and proceeded her walk home. She knew that their relations.h.i.+p still needed more work, but she could not help but wonder how they could go back to the days when they were inseparable.

Song Sheng arrived home late at night and welcomed by darkness; he could not help but take out a cigarette. He turned on the lights and found the apartment to look more homey and lively than it looked over the past two weeks, but he felt alone.

He had grown accustomed to keeping himself busy for the last two years, but now that he was back in his country, his city, he could not help but feel like he was missing something.

He glanced at his Italian leather sofa, remembering that Qian Meigui slept the night before. He sat and ran his fingers through the soft leather, his hand meeting cold. He decided to call an old friend, Rong Ming. After a few moments, the call answered.

"Who the f.u.c.k is this?" answered Rong Ming. He put his daughter to bed and was about to sleep with his wife when his phone rang.

"h.e.l.lo, Rong Ming," Song Sheng greeted.

The other line was silent. "Sheng?" he questioned.

"Yes," he answered gravely.

"It's been two years. Why now?"

"Let's get some drinks."

"No," Rong Ming said; a part of him was angry.

"All right," Song Sheng said almost hanging up the call.

"Wait—" Rong Ming began, "Should I come over, or will we go out?" he asked.

"Go out," Song Sheng.

"All right, then meet me at Bar XX," Rong Ming said.

"Mhm," Song Sheng hung up the call.

Song Sheng drove his black Maybach to the bar that Rong Ming suggested. It looked similar to a nightclub, as there was a floor for dancing, and different levels to play games, gamble, and drink. Song Sheng approached the VIP section, which he was let in by security after showing his I.D.
