In Filipino, there are 5 vowel sounds.

*In American English, there are 20 vowel sounds.

**And 12 pure vowel sounds

**8 diphthongs (combination of 2 vowel sounds)

***Examples:

- cap (ae) - (eyah)

- cop (d.j.) - "drop jaw"

- father (d.j.) - "drop jaw"

- cup (schwa) - "uh!"

*There are some consonant sounds in English that are not present in Filipino.
