35 Learning Pythagoras Theorem, Is Kind Of A Pain: That I Deserve

When I had woken up the next day, it was practically impossible for me to move my legs. Any slight at attempt at movement resulted in immense pain, as I cursed myself. I was thankful to Kaita for providing me with the opportunity to chase Sora, so I didn't have anything to complain about. As that thought struck my mind, I got the desire to meet Kaita again.

I had nothing better to do, and it had been a while since I'd met Kaita. I looked around my room, landing my attention for a couple of moments on each anime poster. My eyes ultimately landed on a poster of My Villain Academia as my mind was reminded of the series.

- That sure was a good series. Useless risked so much to grow, he even destroyed his body. He really hurt himself to move forward.

Wait…

Hurt yourself to move forward…?

That's some great information, I know what to do. -

I stared at my fist for a second, with a blank and longing facial expression. I shrugged as my logic convinced me to do it.

I raised it to the air and quickly threw it towards myself.

"OUCH"

-Pain, Pain, Pain, PAIN. That hurt so much! I thought I would pa.s.s out immediately, I forgot how weak I was! -

The faces on the posters I stared at earlier suddenly felt a lot more condescending, I looked around and suddenly realized the most obvious thing. The four b.u.t.tons that rested on each corner of my vision stared blankly. I, with my mind, hovered over the top-right one that said "Snooze". Like how it often was when you were stupid and oblivious, the answer to my problem had been staring at me right under my nose, literally. The result seemed obvious to me, so I ignored pressing it immediately and looked over at the two remaining ones that I didn't know the function of.

I hovered over the bottom-right b.u.t.ton and a label saying "WIP" popped up, I scratched my head and looked over to the other b.u.t.ton, which gave me the same label.

- Work In Progress, huh?

That doesn't make any sense… This is an ancient 'system', how haven't they completed it!? Are they just lazy!? -

I was dedicated to finding answers, so I quickly pressed the 'Snooze' b.u.t.ton which prompted a notice to show up saying

------------------------------------------------------------

Are you sure you want to snooze right now?

You will be transported to Grandia and put in contact with your system.

Also, you will never be able to smell cheese again, do you wish to proceed?

--------- ---------

YES

NO

--------- ---------

------------------------------------------------------------

After reading the odd side-effect, I shrugged slightly as I wasn't the hugest fan of cheese and especially the smell that accompanied it. I pressed "YES" quickly without thinking about it, and as I felt more sleepy and my brain had gotten a couple of more seconds to think about it, I burst out

"Wait, Pizzz..."

but it was for naught as I fell back to my pillow in an unconscious state.

…

I sat in a chair next to a desk, with a completely white background to everything. A seemingly young girl in a shrine maiden outfit with brown hair stood a couple of meters in front of the desk, silently glaring at me. I said

"Ah, Kaita! Looking as young as ever, I see. Despite that not being the case, scarily enough."

Kaita approached me and slammed her hands on the desk, causing me to jump in fright. I scratched my head, wondering if she finally realized that I was trash. But, I asked quickly anyway

"W-What?"

Kaita looked at me with disappointed eyes and summoned some pieces of paper from nowhere and placed them on the desk quickly and yelled

"What are these grades in Math!? You're doing so well in other subjects, but you're almost failing math!"

I laughed wryly as I nervously stared at the grade. I started frantically looking around and commented

"Where's the staircase, where's the cube? Where's the Konami code!? Like completing Contra wasn't hard enough, I really need it right now!"

Kaita shook her head as she backed up a bit, and summoned a blackboard out of nowhere. She also put on some gla.s.ses, to try and make it more official. She said

"As your servant, I have to make sure my Master fully masters his potential. So, we're doing some Math lessons. Also, you can say goodbye to that staircase with beautiful Ancient Era architecture until you learn some Math."

I rolled my head back in dissatisfaction, even though I knew that I deserved to be punished like that and that I needed it, I didn't feel like doing Math that day. I said

"Why, and How did you find out about that?"

Kaita responded

"Well, since time moves thrice as slow here, I thought that I'd find out some more about you. Now I know, for example, why you don't like to write with your hand."

I nodded and calmly said

"Because my wrists get tired, and--"

"And you believe that writing is something for n.o.bility, since people of the upper echelons used to be the only ones who were literate a long time ago."

"Precisely, I'm surprised you found out so many details."

Kaita shook her head in disapproval and said

"I'm the one who's supposed to be old-fas.h.i.+oned since I'm 2000 years old, but even you seem ancient to me."

I shook my head and fell silent for a minute, until I got a frightened face and asked carefully

"Then, do you know about me---"

Kaita interrupted and tried to finish the sentence

"You peeing in the shower occasionally? Yeah, I know"

I just shook my head and continued

"About me watching anime at 2 am despite having to sleep for school the next day."

Kaita was left quiet, but nodded slowly as it was true that she knew.

I dropped my jaw and jumped up from the chair and up to the desk, leaving me at a higher alt.i.tude, staring down at Kaita for a second. I then put a foot on the chair's back and put weight on it while saying

"No way..."

The chair fell towards the ground, with me riding downwards on the back part, ultimately starting to sprint as it laid still on the ground. Kaita quickly teleported to my vicinity and exclaimed

"Why is that the worse one!? It's bad to stay up late, sure. But the first one is way more scandalous, isn't it!?"

I got brought back to the fake cla.s.sroom with a single snap of the finger, seating me back to the desk I'd recently escaped from. Kaita adjusted her loose shrine maiden outfit to reveal a little more of her neck subconsciously, putting up her gla.s.ses and turning towards the blackboard with faint writing on it, introducing the subject to be tortured by. As she smiled widely, Kaita wrote out some complex-looking formulas on the blackboard and the boredom already started to seep into my mind.

As she tapped her white crayon on the blackboard and said

"Alright, write this down and answer it."

I already knew that the hours of torture had started.

As I stared down at the paper and started writing the annoying letters and numbers, the already slowed down time perception only slowed down.

…

~ Several hours later ~

"3,14159265358979---

Wait, Why do I need to know this!?"

Kaita turned around from writing on the blackboard and answered

"We're moving on to Geometry now, you need to be prepared."

I quickly retorted with

"No way! It's not even relevant and it's just going to make me forget all of the Algebra I've forced into my head! Still, there's no reason for me to know so many decimals, on tests, they just tell you to use the simple "3,14" if you have a calculator and "3" if you don't!"

Kaita shook her head as she started writing something, I was unable to see what it was so I waited with a neutral face, hidden with quiet dread. It took several, quiet and painful, minutes for her to finish and the little glimpse I could get did not give me any good vibes. Even Kaita's arm started faltering a little bit after writing for such a long time. Kaita suddenly turned around and revealed the awaited formula

"A^2 + B^2 = C^2"

I stared at the equation quietly as I couldn't believe my eyes, and I prepared to talk.

I said

"Is that… Pythagoras Theorem…?"

A simple "Uh-huh" from Kaita was heard as she smiled lightly in my direction, tilting her head ever so slightly to her right. I paused as I stared up to the limitless, white sky. I quietly pushed out

"I… don't know that one."

Eyes almost popping out of their sockets, Kaita stared in quiet as she thought about what was just said. She lifted a finger, as to try and pause the world, and exclaimed

"What…?"

I closed my eyes as I pictured the equation in my head, and said

"I mean, why are the 2s floating above the letters? I'm sorry for being so bad at math, but I don't really understand what that is. Maybe I've used it before, but that information is completely gone now."

Kaita looked over to the blackboard to make sure it was the correct equation she was thinking of, and then looked back to me in surprise. She said

"You…

Don't know…

This equation…

Which you learn in, like, 8th grade…

This simple equation…

THAT'S IT!

You're going to spend a lot of time with me here, studying mathematics. So you'd better prepare yourself, Master!

First of all, you're going to write this down 30 times to remember it!"

I lifelessly put myself down in the chair again and said

"Of course it would turn out like this----"

But all of a sudden, a door appeared out of nothing and interrupted the entire scene. I, once again, jumped up on the table and let myself slide down the chair as a half-amused half-disapproving face observed him. The door opened with pink smoke dramatically blasting to the sides as a person entered the s.p.a.ce. Clad in an all-black robe-like jacket, and sporting a tall scarf covering half of his face, he confidently walked forward as he eyed the room quickly.

As the door slowly dissipated behind him, he stood shocked as to what he was witnessing.

The silence prevailed as everybody just stared at each other, me avoiding eye contact with anyone. I took a look at his outfit and asked

"Why do you have a jacket on, and a scarf for that matter?"

He looked over and quickly said

"No specific reason, thought it looked stylish"

I scratched my head as I thought about his sudden appearance, interrupting the mathematics lesson, and said

"Makes sense, sorry for asking. Also, are you G.o.d?"

He answered, with a similar flat tone to his previous answer

"Not really."

Kaita joined the conversation, drawing herself closer by a couple of meters, and said

"The Lazy King…? What are you doing here?"

I just repeated his t.i.tle in shock, saying

"The… Lazy King?"

The supposed Lazy King readjusted his scarf slightly and answered

"I'm here to give this… Kenjuri kid, or whatever his name is, a mission."

Kaita acted even more shocked than she was before, even managing to drop her crayon, as she said

"YOU came out here to give him a mission!?"

-Woah, Woah, What!? Is there something going on now? Should I try and leave? Maybe not, he did just save me from hours and hours of mathematics. Guess I'll listen, not that I have a choice. But pretending I do certainly makes me feel better, but I'm not allowed to feel good. Talk about a predicament. -
