59 The Shy Flower Part 4

"Come on! Hurry up! Stop moving so slowly!"

"Ah… Ow… Ok… Ok… Ruby… Stop… Ow… Kicking me."

"It's your punishment for picking me up late. You said yesterday we were meeting at 8 in the morning as the match starts at 9. It is now 8:45 and we are going to be late."

"Do you have any idea how hard it is for me to meet up with anyone! When we leave school everyone takes a left from the gate. I'm the only person who takes a right! You all live on the other side of the school to me! Why didn't you just meet me at school! You've just added on an extra 25 minutes to my already long walk! CURSE YOU!"

Ruby and Owen walked back to the school for Sean's football match, for Owen this was the second time he would have walked pa.s.sed the school today.

The two walked together throwing insults back and forth for the whole journey. The looks they received from pa.s.sersby weren't enough to stop them from getting creative with their insults.

"So, cherry head. What exactly are we going to be doing? It's not like we are known for being sporty. Us musicians aren't sporty people."

"Fufufu. You underestimate me, Owen" Ruby said arrogantly. "I'm not even sure I know the rules of football!"

"Is that something you really should be happy about? How can you not know the rules?"

"I know that you run and kick a ball!"

The two of them continued walking whilst Owen questioned how Ruby was unaware of the rules. He was paranoid that Ruby was messing with him and spoke carefully as to not accidentally step on a landmine.

"So, anyway, about this Lily girl." Ruby began to speak.

"What about her?"

"What's she like?"

"Apart from the issues, she's a normal girl. I'd say she's cute. The thing she does with her jumper sleeves is cute. OUCH! Please stop kicking me!"

Ruby stared at Owen as he slowly increased his speed as to not be kicked again. She watched his back closely and run to catch up to him.

"Alright, alright. I'll stop kicking you."

The two continued to walk in silence for the remainder of the journey. Ruby watched the ground as she walked whilst Owen stood beside her, thinking about if it was his fault.

"Good to see you guys aren't late!" Ethan stood outside the school gate waiting for people to arrive.

"We still have 5 minutes. Where are the others?" Owen asked.

"Kaylee is saving us seats, Don't know where Lily is. Oh! And Sean is here, in case you cared."

"I don't but thanks anyway!" Owen replied.

"Well, I'm going to find Kaylee." Ruby ran off into the school field, leaving Ethan and Owen behind.

"She seems angry." Ethan said. "What did you do this time?"

"Why do you always a.s.sume I did something?"

"Because who else will upset her? Idiot."

Owen looked at Ethan attempting to think of a reply. It took him several seconds of blankly staring at his face before he gave up and decided to apologise for no reason.

"Whatever." Owen said "Have you heard from Sean? Where is Lily?"

"No idea, what if she doesn't come? Will Sean be ok?"

"Let's just hope that she shows up. The games always start late so I'd say we have 10 minutes."

The two of them waited by the school gates like bouncers to a nightclub. The least threatening bouncers the world had ever seen a.n.a.lysed each car that drove pa.s.sed. Imagining themselves as some sort of super being that can slow down time so they could try and spot Lily in a pa.s.sing car.

Several minutes and a few odd looks pa.s.sed before Ethan decided to give up.

"I don't think she is coming."

"Sigh. As much as I hate to admit it. I think you are right."

The two of them were about to return to the field to watch the game but quickly noticed a small pink blob run towards them from down the road.

The blob stood in front of them attempting to catch their breath. Ethan looked at Owen as if knew what was supposed to be happening.

"L-lily?" Owen asked

"Ah!" The blob pulled down their hood as their black hair fell onto their shoulders and looked up to Owen and Ethan with a smile.

"Oh thank G.o.d, She's here." Ethan said with a sigh of relief.

"I-i made it. S-sorry I'm late." Lily said

"No need to worry. Let's get going now that we are all here."

"Awwwwwwww. SHE'S SOOOOO CUTE!!!!!" Kaylee projected as loud as she could a screech which paralysed most. She grabbed Lily's cheeks and hugged her tightly, never wanting to let go. Ruby shyly attempted to pat Lily's head but pulled away as she didn't want to embarra.s.s herself.

Owen watched in fear as he saw the true horror that girls could emit. He hoped that he would never find himself in a situation as embarra.s.sing as the one that Lily was in right now.

Ethan's eyes couldn't look away as blood slowly began to fall from his nose.

"H-hey Owen," Ethan said.

"Y-yeah?"

"Aren't girls great?"

Owen didn't know how to reply, he wasn't sure if it was rhetorical or if Ethan was being his usual stupid self.

The match started several minutes later and they all found a spot in the open field to sit down on. The weather was warm so they decided to sit on the gra.s.s and watch from a 'respectable' distance.

Not long into the match, Kaylee screamed at the top of her lungs trying to support Sean whilst also teaching Ruby the rules of the game. Ethan had trouble focusing on the game as he cared more about Kaylee wearing her usual ponytail combined with a football s.h.i.+rt and shorts.

Owen and Lily sat quietly behind them, as the two anti-social ones in the group they attempted to get to know each other better.

"So, how you been?" Owen said awkwardly.

"Errr, I've been ok. At first, I was worried about this. Coming to see this match. I attempted to see one in the past but I got scared and couldn't go."

"Oh? Do you like football then?"

"I've always been interested. My dad used to like football."

"Used to?" Owen asked.

"I-i don't see him anymore."

'Ah… I've stepped on a landmine.' Owen thought to himself.

"I-i see." Owen said, trying his best to reply in the awkward situation he put himself in.

"YEAHHH!! GO SEAN!!!" Kaylee screamed as loud as she could as Sean scored a goal.

Lily moved forward to see if she could spot Sean and watched as he smiled like a child with his teammates.

"GIVE ME AN S!" Cheerleader Kaylee chanted.

"S!" Ethan chanted back.

"Please don't do that." Owen replied full of embarra.s.sment from the stares of the other people watching.

"Is this what it's always like?" Lily asked as she moved back into place next to Owen.

"What do you mean?"

"With you lot. You always seem like you are having a lot of fun. Sean said you guys were like this."

Owen looked at her as she stared at the game.

"It's not always like this, you know. Although we all seem to be really good friends and happy, it's only because we've been through a lot together. Although, compared to what you've been through. Our problems are nothing."

Lily stared at Owen blankly, her expression was unnoticeable to whether or not she enjoyed Owen's joke.

"S-sorry...W-was that joke in poor taste?" Owen said hoping he could climb out of the hole he had dug.

"N-no. I was just wondering if I could be like that?"

"Like what?" Owen asked.

"Have friends."

"Friends? You've already got us, haven't you? I'd say we were friends."

Lily looked at those around her. Kaylee who was cheering and Ethan who was trying to spend time with her by cheering along. Ruby sat next to them laughing along, whilst Sean ran about the field, never losing his smile.

"F-friends." Lily said to herself.

'Please don't cry. Please don't cry.' Owen kept thinking to himself expecting things to go wrong for him again.

"If you don't mind me asking?" Owen said. "Why were you bullied?"

Lily sat and thought to herself. She pulled up her hood and started to pull and the ends of her hoodie.

"I-i… messed up… back in year 4. I ruined the school's sports festival for everyone."

"That long ago? Don't most schools do a sports festival of some kind every year anyway? Why would people bring it up for that long?"

"I-i don't know."

Owen sat and looked at Lily who seemed as if she didn't want to talk about it. Although he wanted to find out more he didn't want to ruin a day she had looked forward to for years.

"You're named after a flower, right?" Owen said.

"Y-yeah?"

"My favourite flower is Anemone. The reason for that being that it can either mean bad luck and loss of a loved one, or it can mean antic.i.p.ation and excitement for the future. I don't always think of the future, it's something I found scary. I don't even know if I'll be in this school next year, I may not even be alive. But I know that I'll always have these people. These people around me are helping me get excited about the future. As scary as it sounds, these people are the ones that want me to embrace it."

To Lily, the future was always something she dreaded. She always saw her future the same as the past. Full of pain and loneliness.

"I like Amaryllis." She whispered.

"Oh… Amaryllis. A shy and timid nymph that fell in love with a shepherd, said to have Hercule's strength and Apollo's beauty. I think that's a good choice."

"You sure know a lot about flowers. Shame everything else about you sucks." Ruby had wondered over after getting bored from dealing with the enthusiasm that Kaylee was leaking into Ethan.

"I just happen to know a bunch of random knowledge, that's all."

"Sure thing, flower boy." Ruby sat down next to Owen in silence, stopping Lily and Owen from continuing their conversation. She moved as close as she could to Owen without him noticing.

"YEAAAAA SEAN!!!!" Kaylee howled into the crowd.

"GOOOO SEAN!!!!" Ethan repeated.

"Seems like Ethan is trying his hardest today." Owen said.

Ethan proceeded to take his hands and point them towards Kaylee shaped like a gun.

"Oh, Dear," Owen said. "It's all fun and games until someone whips out the finger guns." Owen watched fully disappointed in Ethan, trying not to remember all the times he has also awkwardly responded with finger guns.

Sweat poured down Ethan's face as he realized what he had just done. He shyly attempted to put both guns back in their holsters, but not before blowing at the end of them.

Owen watched as Ethan's spirit crumbled and attempted to leave Ethan's body.

"I'm glad I'm not the only awkward one today." Owen said patting Ethan on the back.

"Go, Sean!" Lily attempted to shout. She looked over to notice the others looking at her, retreating to her hood.

Owen smirked to himself before standing up and joining Ethan and Kaylee.

"GOOOO SEAN! KILL THEM!"

"GO SEAN!" Ruby cheered.

Lily stood up next to them and attempted to cheer along.

"GOOO SEAN!" she screamed.

The five of them cheered louder than anyone else there. Sean heard every cheer and tried as hard as he could to score, breaking the school's record for most goals scored and winning the game. After the game ended, they all got together and spent the rest of the day celebrating Sean's win.
