31 Dancing Within The Aftermath

We had just finished our performance in front of everyone and were in our regular cla.s.sroom to finish writing up a report about the performance, it's nothing too difficult just a little what went wrong, sort of thing. Personally, apart from Ethan's sudden improv, it went alright.

Ruby had told me and Ethan to go to the cla.s.sroom first whilst she went to look for Kaylee who ran away after the performance.

I could tell Ethan was serious during the performance and seeing Kaylee suddenly run off like that made things worse for him, I have to try my best to comfort him.

"So. No regrets, huh?" I said awkwardly. I mean what else am I supposed to say?

"Yeah, I think I made the right choice." Ethan sat in his chair playing with his thumbs. His voice was monotone but he had a glimpse of a forced smile.

"I think you did the right thing. If it just kept going on like this then you wouldn't have gotten anywhere. I'm proud of you."

"Thanks."

Compared to the previous times when he was having bad luck with Kaylee, this was definitely the worst.

I don't know how to cheer him up.

"What do you think will happen?" Ethan asked "Do you think she won't talk to me anymore. What if she blocks my number. What if she quits her job to get away from me."

"That sounds a little extreme, she isn't the type of person to do that sort of thing. You can only hope that things work out how you want them to."

"Hmm. I guess you're right."

I have no idea what to do to cheer him up. maybe it's best if he just goes home?

"What are you two idiots doing?" Ruby was standing in the doorway, how much she heard of our conversation I don't know.

"Did you find Kaylee?" I asked.

"She's fine, she was in the toilets. She said she'll be up in a minute."

"What?" Ethan shot up.

"I should be going!" Ethan was prepared to walk out and leave but Kaylee was already standing at the door.

"No regrets, right, Ethan?" I whispered to him.

He was terrified as if he was trapped in a cage with lions that hadn't eaten in weeks. He refused to look at Kaylee, and she refused to look at him.

It may seem harsh what I'm doing to him but it's for the best.

"Have you two done your reports?" Kaylee asked.

"I'm going to do it at home," I said.

"S-same." Ethan wanted as little to do with her, back to square one.

"Are you guys ready to go home then?" Kaylee's voice was as emotionless as Ethan's. Ruby didn't say, but I could tell that Kaylee's eyes were covered in makeup. If Ethan found out he'd probably blame himself.

"Shall we go then?"

"Ah! I'm sorry." I said "You guys are going to have to go home without me, I need to get something from the music rooms. My bad guys. Ruby, you are part of the band can you let me into the music rooms? Please?"

I wasn't lying about needing something from the music rooms, I needed to collect some sheet music. I think It's for the best that Ethan and Kaylee walk home together, so this time I'll get Ruby off their backs without asking for a drink in return.

"Huh? Sure I have a key, but I'd rather go home."

"Pleeeeeeaaaaaa.s.sssseeeeee. I'd owe you one?"

Ruby was tempted, I'd hate to owe her anything but I guess for Ethan I'd do it.

"Fine! Sorry, Kaylee looks like you'll have to go home without me this time."

"O-oh. Ok…"

I looked over to Ethan and gave him a hidden thumbs up. His eyes were blank and his face was pale, he looked as if he could pa.s.s out at any moment. Maybe it was a bad idea to do this.

"Come on. You're so slow."

"Ow… Ruby… Stop pulling." Ruby dragged me away by pinching the skin on my arm, like a vicious animal.

Inside the Music room, I searched for the sheet music I was after. I didn't really know where I was looking and Ruby stood by the door guarding me, she had a serious look on her face. As usual, I could tell she wanted to talk about something dangerous.

"She was crying, right? Kaylee that is?" I asked.

"How could you tell. You can hardly look at girls in the eye."

"Ethan would have noticed if he looked at her. Good thing he didn't."

I continued to look for the sheet music amongst a giant pile of unorganised papers.

"That was real, wasn't it? What he said during the performance. He didn't move on did he?" Ruby asked.

"Sigh. I'm afraid not. I understand that you want to protect Kaylee, but even you know that they should talk. That's why you came to help me, am I wrong? I even noticed that you tried to make our performance as similar to their situation as possible. I'm surprised they didn't catch on."

"Hmpf. Whatever. I want Kaylee to be happy. I know she has a boyfriend already, I met him the other day. He seemed on edge the whole time. I just hope Ethan can make her happy."

I was interested in the words Ruby had just said, I don't know why but something about them made my weird feeling in my heart; maybe she has cursed me?

"I'm glad we both agree on something. First time in a while." I said.

"What do you mean?"

"Oh, nothing." I guess she doesn't remember.

"Ah, found it." After searching for a good 5 minutes I found the piece I was after.

"What is it?"

"Chopin. Nocturne no.2"

"What a beautiful piece. Unlike you." Ruby just had to ruin the moment.

"You just can't be cute can you?"

"WHAT??" Ruby turned away from me. "Hmpf." Ruby pouted "Sorry, I'm not cute."

Great now I've upset her. Well done me.

"Come on." I gently hit her on the head with the pieces of paper. "Let's go. It's cold and dark out so I'll walk you home."

"Thanks. Oh, but remember we can't be seen outsi-"

"Yeah yeah, I know, Let's just go already."
