Born at Washington, D.C., 1853. B.S., Earlham College, 1871. Has many honorary higher degrees and decorations. Joined the staff of the _Century_, 1873; a.s.sociate editor, 1881-1909; editor, 1909-13. Father of Owen McMahon Johnson (q.v.).
