Caitlin's Guardian Angel Part 73

Henry yawned again, thinking longingly of his bed.

"All right."

He sliced through the air with a long, skinny index finger.

"Slip the ring on her finger and repeat after me.

With this ring, I thee wed.

I'm sony, Caitlin.

I'm really sorry.

Graham's eyes held hers as he echoed the words.

"With this ring, I thee wed."

Yes, Gray.

Yes, you do.

She pressed her lips together t keep the tears back.

Now everything was up to her.

Henry smiled.

This was the part he always liked.

"By the power vested in me by the state of Nevada, I now pronounce you

husband and wife."

He closed the thick blac bound book and removed his glasses.

"You may kiss the bride."

"Well, go on," Flora urged when Graham made no move to follow Henry's instruction.

"Nothing to be embarras about. We've seen kissing before."

She chuckled.

"Had o couple here about a month ago that looked as if they were going to start their honeymoon right here in our living room. Practically had to turn a hose on them."

She sighed and Caitlin had the definite impression that Flora wouldn't have minded all that much if they had b gun their marriage right there.

Because the woman didn't look as if she was going to I them go until he complied, Graham raised Caitlin's veil an brushed his lips quickly over hers.

Flora looked displeased.

"Better do better than that if y don't want to avail yourself of Henry's other package deal.

Caitlin raised a brow in silent question.

"He also does divorces, though we don't like to broadcast the fact," s

confided as she took back her bouquet and veil from Caitlin.

"Puts a damper on the ceremony."

But that was exactly where the ceremony would lea Caitlin thought.

It was only a matter of time.

A divorce w what was waiting for her at the end.

It was what she agreed to and what would happen, unless something

changed it.

Flora clutched her husband's arm and all but dragged him along as she accompanied Caitlin and Graham to the front door.

"Have a wonderful life," Flora urged, calling after them as they left.

"Be very, very happy."

"She sounds as if she really means that," Graham mmuttered, walking down

the steep front steps to the sidewalk.

"Maybe she does."

Caitlin stopped at the passenger si of Graham's car.

Their car, she amended silently.

At lea for now.

"Maybe she just loves watching weddings."

He laughed under his breath as he opened the door for her.

"Even tacky ones?"

Caitlin smiled.

The wedding wasn't the last word in elegance, but it was still precious

to her.

"Even tacky ones."

She settled in beside Graham in the huge pink vehicle.

Somehow, between now and then, whenever "then" might be, she was going

to have to convince him that their marriage would work.

How, she hadn't the slightest idea.

In any event, they had their work cut out for them.

There was, still the hearing in the iud e's chambers.

And at least a - 9 year of being husband and wife after that.

Plenty of time to convince Gray that he couldn't live without her.

She turned and looked at him, wondering what he was thinking.

They were still sitting parked at the curb before the bright pink sign

that proclaimed the chapel's name along with the number of ceremonies performed there.

And now they would be among the number, Caitlin mused.

"Where to now?"

He placed the key into the ignition and paused before turning it on.

He tried not to think about what he had just done.

"Home."

She stared.

"Gray, it's after eleven o'clock. It's not. - as if you can just click your heels, mutter 'there's no place like home' and get there."

She could see by his expression that he wasn't following her.

He was probably the only living human being who'd never seen The Wizard

of Oz or believed in places existing' over the rainbow at least once in

his life.

She tried again.

"Home is another six-hour drive. You're exhausted. Why don't we just get a room for the night and get an early start in the morning?"

He didn't want to stay here in some small hotel room with her.

With Caitlin filling up every available space.

Once it wouldn't have mattered.

Once he had loved her enough to block out things like reason.
