Caitlin's Guardian Angel Part 40

So do you.

She insisted that they stop at the shop to tell Kerry what had

happened.

Caitlin was resigned to closing the shop for the day, but Kerry volunteered to remain until closing time and then close up herself.

"Youjustgohomeandrest," sheordeted,concerned.

By her expression, it was clear Kerry had no doubts that the detective

would see that Caitlin stayed put.

As they drove to her house, Graham called in the incident on his radio,

giving the dispatcher the license number.

He'd managed to remember all but the last digit.

The make and model of the car would make up for it.

It had been a California plate.

Silence rode with them after he replaced the radio receiver.

They both had things to think about.

Too much was being stuffed into too small a space.

He had too much going on in his life already to have this happening, he thought.

But it didn't change anything.

His feelings were still there, as futile as ever.

Except that this time, he knew how futile they were.

The address she had given him belonged to a modest one story house, nestled on the outskirts of the city.

He had pictured her living somewhere more opulent, expensive.

Wrong again.

It was a fairly new development.

Her house was on a major through street, its back to a right-of-way.

He didn't like it.

It made her too accessible.

Calling in again, he gave the address to the dispatcher and asked for a

patrol car to be assigned to drive periodically through the area.

Graham pulled up in her driveway and turned off the engine.

Another officer would bring her car home for her later.

He made no move to get out.

"Maybe you should stay at a hotel for the time being."

She'd had time to gather herself together on the ride home.

Some of her spirit had returned.

"He's not going to chase me out of my home, Gray."

He nodded, understanding her feelings.

Having something to hang on to was important.

It was one of the reasons his mother had gone back to the reservation

after his father had deserted them.

Roots.

Getting out of the car, he walked with Caitlin to the front door, quietly scanning the area as he did so.

There, was no one outside.

There was no keypad on the wall next to the door.

,' Graham raised a brow as he glanced at her.

"No security system?93 She shook her head.

She-hadn't really seen the need -for one.

"You should have one installed."

He held out his hand.

"Give me your key-" Her fingers still felt clumsy as she hunted for the key.

Finding it, she gave it to him, then shifted restlessly from foot to

foot, looking around.

Everything appeared to be just as it had been when she had left it this morning.

But it wasn't.

In the past few hours her feeling of being safe had been stolen away.

And the sky had fallen on her.

She stared at Graham's back as he went to check out the rooms.

Yes, the sky had fallen.

In more ways than one.

Graham moved methodically from room to room, checking behind drapes,

inside closets and along window frames.

There was no sign of forced entry.

Nothing had been tampered with.

Satisfied, he returned to the living room.

Caitlin was still standing where he had left her, as if being there

could somehow keep her safe.

He only hoped that he could do that for her.

"No one's been here."

She shivered and ran her hands along her arms as she let out a long,

shaky breath.
