The next day was August 15th. As a tradition, trainees would be given their moon cakes during this occasion, and that year was not an exception. All of them, after receiving their cakes, quickly cast a glance in Xia Yao's direction, examining if someone's brother-in-law were treated any more favorably than them.

There was even some who liked to play with fire and grabbed Xia Yao's box of cakes before letting go in disappointment seeing that it was not any different from others'.

Little did the ignorant guy know, inside that identical container were truly distinguishable cakes.

Xia Yao, having packed all of his belongings, looked for his bag of lotus roots before finding it to be nowhere in sight. Still frustrated, he noticed Yuan Zong walking out with a large thermal bag in his hand. Inside of it was savory, freshly-cooked lotus roots in cinnamon sugar (1), with a strong fragrant recognizable from a great distance.

"Tell your mother to give it a try," said Yuan Zong.

"Why did you ask the chef to make this for me? I prefer sweet and sour mixed salad lotus roots."

The chef, on his way out, stopped when hearing this.

"It was not me who made the dish but Director Yuan, himself. I've been here for more than a year, yet this is the first time I've seen him going to the kitchen. That sort of goodwill, you can't say no to!"

Xia Yao glanced at Yuan Zong with unconcealed suspicion. That unmannerly, badass is capable of cooking? Then eating the stuff he makes was probably beyond the realms of possibility!

During dinnertime, the sliced lotus roots was served on the dining table.

Mrs Xia, as soon as she took the very first bite of the dish, rolled her eyes in amazement.

"Hmm, these lotus roots in cinnamon sugar is superb! Even better than that of Ms Lee, our former helper"

Was it really that good? Xia Yao, who couldn't believe his ears, tried it as well.

Immediately, a redolent aroma of cinnamon flowers filled his nose, simultaneously the sweetish, flavorsome root melted on his tongue, fused with smooth, sticky glutinous rice. It was, by his own admission, overly fantastic. This was a southern traditional dish, which demanded a highly complicated recipe, contrary to northeastern food processed only in pressure cookers. Xia Yao had thought a rugged northeastern guy like Yuan Zong couldn't made such a dish, or the product could only deserve the judgment 'edible'. It was striking that the dish doubtlessly reached an expert level!

Xia Yao before hasn't had much liking for this type of dish, but at the moment, his chopsticks couldn't stop hastily picking up more.

Ms Xia could not help but ask, "Where did you buy it?"

"At...at a stall on the sidewalk"

"Go get some more tomorrow."

Xia Yao was on the point of choking, "Th... that thing... It's mid autumn tomorrow mom! They need to take a day off!"

"Oh, I forgot. Then we'll wait till after the moon festival."

Xia Yao expected that after several days, his honorable mother would forget this. Dishearteningly, at the very first day after their holiday, he was gripped by Mrs. Xia on the way out to his office.

"Remember to buy a few lotus roots in cinnamon sugar, of course from that stall you mentioned."

That evening, Xia Yao looked for a random food stall, buying the same type of lotus roots. Unfortunately, his mother saw through the trick just after the first bite. Not just her, even Xia Yao himself realized it was not of the same level as other day's extreme flavor.

"Are you kidding me?!" Mrs Xia glared at her son.

Xia Yao sighed, "Their stall only opens on eekends."

"Then come back to it this weekend!"

That weekend, as Xia Yao arrived at Yuan Zong's company, he received a message from his mother.

"Son, remember to come home tonight with lotus roots of that stall."

Xia Yao's lips twitched. Addicted after only one time, but...the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Xia Yao himself didn't feel he had had enough either, as throughout these days, the charming image of those sweet cinnamon flavored lotus roots occupied his mind every time hunger emerged.

But how would he open his mouth? He just couldn't tell the man "My mom and I are addicted to it, please make some more". No, it would be embarrassing. Missing just a dish that badly, after all was that all the gluttony he and mom could show off?

Xia Yao took in a heavy breath, heading to the change-room.

Yuan Zong didn't fail to notice Xia Yao's mindless constant glances at the lotus lake. Two during his early morning run, two more when feeding the birds, two other in the wrestling practice, even two after leaving the toilet, halfway in pulling his pants up...(=_=...he's going to the toilet and you still watch on with those eagle eyes of yours?)

That afternoon, during the short break after second and third period, Xia Yao, following his usual habit, glancing over the lotus lake before his eyes suddenly froze.

In the large lake was a moving silhouette of a body. Despite the distance, Xia Yao still recognized Yuan Zong. Indeed, it was no other than him who could step barefoot into the water during this season without any signs of shivering or shaking; slow, firm steps beneath the mud kept up with outstanding perseverance. He leaned down on his waist, the well-toned chest nearly reached the water surface as ten fingers submerged into the mud layer, neatly pulling up a lotus root. With that repeated skillful movement, a great heap of roots soon piled up on the ground, varying in size and length.

Yuan Zong jumped out of the lake, his bare muscular legs covered with a thin layer of mud. Carrying the roots, he walked barefoot on the asphalted road, imprinting on the ground large, firm footsteps.

An autumn breeze blew into the room before snuggling into Xia Yao's lap, making him quietly shiver.

The best way into a man's heart is through his stomach ;). Hehe...

Awe! I love that Yuan Zong is so caring towards Xia Yao!
