Chapter 97: Autumnfell

T/N: Hi, y'all, I just decided to pick up this novel for multiple reasons. To start with, my boss asked me to and secondly I love my boss! Haha, all jokes aside, I appreciate how the storyline was unfolding smoothly, and it's a great mix of Dungeons And Dragons, Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, to just name a few, it comes to a point that I'm intrigued to see how the author is going to balance all these crazy elements.

Anyway, please read it, rate it and let me know about it.

And wait, let's give a shoutout to Salty Tank Translation, the previous chapters were translated beautifully by them. I know I have some big shoes to fill, especially considering this is the first time that I deal with adventure/fantasy novel, as exciting as it gets, the struggle was real, lol. Wish me luck. All comments and suggestions are highly appreciated.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Bonfire was crackling.

Aladdin was preparing late night snacks, which was some sliced meet roasted with seasoned spice. Halflings were a species who lived life abundantly, they would enjoy life with at least half of their wealth acc.u.mulated from adventures, and their adventuring life wouldn't be awfully long, they tended to retire and settle in their hometown once they secured certain amount of wealth.

Vivian was so stuffed at this point, even Gloria was burping from eating too much, then she entered the carriage with a blush. Soran, on the other hand, was having a very good appet.i.te. The stronger he became, the more food he could consume, at this point he could eat as twice as he used to.

Now he carried jerkies around with him, just in case he got no time to make fire and cook in fights. That was when jerkies came in handy, things would be so much better once he hit the fourth Grade, his perseverance would take a great leap, he could get by without food or water for as long as seven or even eight days. He knew one thing or two about barbecue, the two were happily make kebabs by the bonfire, Soran mastered cooking skills most likely because the gourmet Halfling was keeping him company along the journey.

Little did they expect it was already 20 o'clock now.

Basic techniques include multiple genres. Apart from those deciding fighting abilities, it even included forging, cooking, tailoring, etc., which were not of great importance, and they were rarely trained specially. Weapons forging and armor forging were a limited business, for equipment of phenomenal power, alchemy was in need to put into along with forging techniques. A typical example would be Sorcerer Robes, special material was a must for high cla.s.s robes, such as tensile nephila silk from Gloomy Land, however, it took more than average tailoring skills to manufacture a fine robe with such a superb material.

As for the sorcerer himself, mastering the skill of advanced tailoring besides the heavy practicing tasks would be a stretch.

Therefore, superior high cla.s.s items were rarely seen.

Aladdin was now puffing his pipe by the carriage, handing a sachet of tobacco to Soran, "Try the tobacco from Romdodd Clan, the finest in north Hael this is."

Soran didn't turn him off, he got some out and lit. Soran barely drank, he turned to tobacco to alleviate pain when necessary. Tobaccos planted by Halflings had always been hard to obtain, sometimes hard to purchase with gold coins. They were so popular among sorcerers, such a fine aroma once it was lit, so refres.h.i.+ng, just like the incense burned by Gloria. Male sorcerers preferred tobacco though.

Night was getting darker.

The Halfling unfold a blanket, and ready to sleep tucking in the blanket, hmm, who knew whether he could have a good sleep. Rouges tended to have a hard time falling asleep after all.

Rouges were entrusted with the heaviest task among the adventuring bunch, they needed to stay alert.

They were the first under interrogation at situations of surprised attacks, that was the reason at one time rouges tended to be loners. The tasked they were entrusted with were simply too overburden, they needed to pioneer in dangerous places, deal with traps as pathfinders. They were supposed to be on sentry duty at night while soldiers were fast asleep and leaders were meditating. It would help greatly when there were rouges of high cla.s.s available, soldiers were useless in dangerous spots, and chances were they have no clue when and how they were attacked by the enemies.

Being a loner was no bad business. So much freedom.

Wolves were howling from afar.

Hearing that, Vivian pulled Soran on his s.h.i.+rt tip gently, who was resting on the carriage, Soran patted her on the head with a smile as a comfort. Halflings were meek in nature, it didn't necessary mean they tended to treat any potential hazard lightly, even when they were protected by witch's formations. Soran always felt safer when he himself was the one who kept watch at night. Cold was setting in, probably winter would come earlier this year, it was going to be colder than previous years.

Aladdin was fast asleep. What he longed for the most was a good night sleep rather than a hitchhike.

He would not sleep like a baby if he was adventuring by himself.

Soran was sitting erect with a blanket on, occasionally he would get up and pace around. The sound from afar was the wolves had sensed their existence, but they didn't come to hara.s.s. Wolves live on beasts primarily, they wouldn't hara.s.s travellers unless they were starving and they had no other option. Any hara.s.sment would cost their own lives as well, they avoided hara.s.sing travellers to keep a balance within their species.

Soran was covered in frost the next morning.

It was indeed getting cold.

Soran didn't mind the cold in particular. While Vivian's heart ached when she saw the frost on his eyebrows the next morning, she wiped the frost out, and breathed warm breath to warm him up, "My dear brother, are you feeling cold?"

Soran kissed her on the forehead with a smile, "No, I'm all right. It is not that cold."

When Gloria woke up, she noticed her breath became cold mist, she said in a low voice, "Winter comes one month in advance."

Soran simply nodded as a reply.

Aladdin moved around a bit when he woke up, then he went to collect firewood for cooking soup, he was well prepared on cookeries, so they resumed their adventure right after a humble meal. They didn't encounter beasts probably because the merchant troop just travelled this way not long ago before them. It went on like that for two days or so, they finally arrived Autumnfell five days later.

Autumnfell was guarded by Half-elves.

It had a large population of Half-elves, their ears pointy, slender and agile figure, and handsome appearance, most Half-elves were mixed, they held more human heritage than elf. Their villages were similar to human's, with more guerites built in though.

Soran didn't linger on, he kept on waking on the direction of Autumnfell, finally they arrived the town on the sixth day.

"All right, everyone, I'm going to meet Iron Dwarves." said the Halfling.

He jumped from the carriage, waved goodbye at Vivian, and away he went, saying "Goodbye, you lovely girl. Goodbye, dear witch. Goodbye, my friend."

"Visit Hael sometime please, I'll treat you guys to sturgeon."

Parting was such a normal thing.

Even for travellers who have kept each other for a long time.

Vivian felt a sense of loss seeing the Halfling left, but soon she felt better, she organized the gifts she received with a smile, full of joy. The Halfling friend was quite to her liking, she treated him more like a peer due to his height. She was just too smart and mature compared to other kids. So the Halfling who had the wisdom of an adult but had the same height like herself was more like a peer to her.

The town was built in Elf Race style.

The population in the town believed in Elf G.o.ds, with a small part of them believing in other G.o.ds. Firmiana simplex trees were planted across the whole town, it looked quite poetic in autumn with all the fallen leaves lying on the ground. Half-elves in this town wors.h.i.+pped phoenix in myths. So they were fond of firmiana simplex trees.

Phoenix had many names.

Monks called them the immortal birds, priests called them firebirds, sorcerers call them ashes of mysteries.

Phoenix lived in the dynasty of Mystery Empire.

It could be hardly seen after that, rarer than G.o.d, more powerful than dragon. It was said the undying fire around them would only die out when they deceased, and the sacred fire on them would turn everything into ashes.

Beautiful yet unapproachable they were.

Two landmarks were built in Autumnfell. One was the statue of phoenix spreading the wings erecting high on the square, as high as 30 meters, as wide as 20 meters. The other one was a skyrocketing dome tower as high as 300 meters, where the annually Autumn Leaves Convention being held, namely the convention held for Practiced Spellcasters among the race. The most striking scene was neither one of the two but a pillar standing on the dome, which s.h.i.+ned silver glow brilliantly.

The pillar shaped like surge diverter was actually Magical Crystal Cannon.

Mediocre minds would a.s.sume Magical Crystal Cannon to be a hefty object built on the city wall by the name, just like the cannons used by the Dwarf Race, they would a.s.sume sorcerers putting Magical Crystal into the cannons and start the machine by casting a spell, and followed a boom, a dragon was. .h.i.t by the cannon.

Yup, adrenaline would surge through their bodies on thinking of it.

That was far from the fact, Magical Crystal Cannon shot in straight-line attack rather than parabolic curve. It was no practical use at all, it most likely would backfire. It was born at the time when Mystery Empire ruled, supposed to be put in use with Floating City Tactic, with an attack range of 1000km. A weapon could initiate a crus.h.i.+ng blow from up high.

Its full name was Magical Crystal Pulsating Cannon.
