2 The letter and the Mythical Beast

The next day, some time before the café opened.

I asked the Rotos to call over a guest.

The door opened from a breeze of wind, and several numbers of white feathers flew in. Gradually the feathers cl.u.s.ter together, and from within it appeared a living creature alike human.

Taking a glimpse, it looked like a man covering himself with fluffy white clothing with black pants and boots. But looking much closer, he is actually not wearing any clothing, but rather, he is covered by white feathers hanging down from his head until his chest. The feathers at the back of his head is longer, and s.h.i.+nes from a color of light green to sky blue. The long feathers dangling down until the floor had the same color. Both his hands are big shaped wings, and the black pants-look alike was actually his lower half of the body. The creature then held high its right wing, and his black lips as if it was painted black then opened.

"A souvenir for you"

Within his mouth, sharp fangs could be seen.

The next moment, a gust of wind cl.u.s.tered a number of white feathers. But there is no worry that the wind would blow away the things inside the shop, for the wind is something alike an illusion.

The soft wind bring about the scent of a deep forest. I deeply breathe in the scent.

Gradually the white feathers cl.u.s.ter around the counter table, and disappeared in a s.h.i.+ne of light. Instead, 3 creatures called Gauu appeared there. They look like piglets, and seem to be already dead. I suppose it was hunted by the mythical beast in front of my eyes, Laclain.

Laclain is a mythical beast in a magic contract with me, and like the Rotos, he too inhabits the Spirit Forest. Mythical beasts have powers like those of G.o.ds, and are existence that are rarely seen by humans. The current Laclain is merely a vessel, and the real one is divinely like a phoenix.

Mythical beasts do not become attach to humans unless there is an important matter. But I was able to easily make a pact with Laclain, because I once helped a hurt Laclain in the Spirit Forest. After, Laclain has come to listen to my favors.

"Let the Demis have them or however" As Laclain pointing out to the Gauu on the counter and said so. It seems he have heard about how the Demis visit the shop from the Rotos.

"Thank you, Laclain"

I suppose I could whip up a Gauu Steak for the DemiMercSquad. The taste of Gauu meat is similar to those of chicken meat. Adding in tomato sauce, how about making it grilled chicken style? I resolved to make the dish after hearing the opinions of the 4 Demis.

"Those in the forest are worried about you. They're Demis, and mercenaries to boot. I hear that mercenaries are all rough beings"

Oh my… So the Rotos told the other spirits as well then.

"They are all kind people, so please tell the others to not worry"

Bringing in the Gauu to the kitchen, I faced towards Laclain. Then, Laclain who was looking around the shop narrowed down his eyes.

"The shop's barrier should be fine. Well, I guess I could feel relieved for now"

…Truth to be told, there is barrier spread within the shop. When activated, it easily chases away the targets.

Up till now, there was no situation that needs the barrier to be activated. If possible, I hope for the barrier to never be activated.

Well then, let us get to the main topic.

The reason I asked the Rotos to call for Laclain was none other than to help me send letters to Henzel and Lexy. I avoided depicting anything about my location in the letters, and unfortunately, I too did not write anything about the DemiMercSquad members. The content was about apologizing for making them worry, and that I have adapted to my new life and am doing well. Although I feel bad about how this is one-sided, but because I am afraid of my brother, I wrote about how I will inform them on how to contact me after the incident had calmed down.

Taking out the 2 letters, Laclain bluntly made a frowned face.

"….. Again, are you asking that I ** send the letter again?"

"Oh my, do you dislike it? I thought that if it is Laclain, the letter will be safely sent…."

I have had Laclain send over letters for me several times before. Although I asked Grandfather and Ramo a favor the last time I sent letters to Henzel and Lexy, thinking it through it was best to hand it to Laclain. Since he could fly anywhere freely, and move around without being seen by anyone.

"….. I shall hear your wishes, but don't make me do deliveries all the time"

Laclain slightly widened his wing, and skillfully held the letter in between his feathers. The letter then disappeared like an illusion. But in truth, it is properly cared for by Laclain so it is fine.

"Thank you, Laclain" saying so with a smile, Laclain nodded slightly reculantly.

"Then, I shall deliver these"

A gentle breeze rolled up and the door opened. Countless numbers of white feathers then flew about.

"Please, allow that I"

His back facing me, only Laclain's head was looking over towards me. His s.h.i.+ning pure white feathers slightly dazzled my eyes.

"If by any chance, I come across your brother, and he do tries to bring harm in any way……. Please allow that I fight back with all I have"

Laclain, with a grin on his face. His sharp fang protruded out which can be seen, and his light green eyes lit with fire.

….Looks like he heard about how my brother is still looking for me from the Rotos as well.

"No can do!" As I shout out amidst the feathers flying about.

But Laclain, still a fearless smile on his face, broadened his wings. And so, he disappeared like an illusion along with the countless numbers of feathers.

Laclain never seemed to take an interest/liking to n.o.bles. Among them, he harbors hostility towards my family…. I pray that he does not meet with my brother.

"Phew…" I take a breath, as if to relieve the uneasiness I have.

I then looked around the shop after, and checked on my appearance before putting out the open sign.

After some time, the customers for today start to come in.

"Good morning, welcome to Café Mattari."

As usual, I welcomed them with a smile.

**Laclain's use of first person term was 我(ware) which usually is defined as ‘we' or ‘us', like the Chinese emperors. Sometimes it is used in characters which has an affinity with divinity, like G.o.ds or spirits and such. It sometimes also implies an ent.i.ty which is a cl.u.s.ter of many, or when can be seen as seeing oneself objectively (?).

So I think i'll make Laclain's speech somewhat differently than the rest.
