Rong Jian almost didn't recognize her with the layers of powder and makeup and the colorfully expensive yet hinder some, long robe . "Tian'er certainly looks different today . "

"Stuff it . I better not have to do this again, the robe is so bothersome and the makeup on my face is so stuffy, I feel like I'm already sweating . How do your n.o.ble women live? It's a miracle they haven't all suffocated and died from their own perfume and makeup . " She kept complaining as she walked past Rong Jian to the front of the residence, where the carriage was waiting to take them to the Imperial Palace . Right behind her was the old maid and one of the younger maids, most likely the former's a.s.sistant or something similar . Smelling the heavy dose of perfume on Shen Tianyu as she walked by, Rong Jian wrinkled his nose and frowned in distaste .

"Why did you put so much perfume on her? Are you trying to make her into an incense burner? Or you want to choke everyone with that heavy scent?" Rong Jian turned to the old maid and reprimanded .

The old maid cowered in front of Rong Jian, and bowed her head . Her a.s.sistant did the same, not speaking a word or making a sound . "This humble one only thought to incorporate the other n.o.ble ladies' fas.h.i.+on so the Miss would not be ridiculed . " The old maid tried to explain herself .

"What incorporate? Who needs to follow their fas.h.i.+on? Tian'er is her own person and, therefore, should display her own taste in clothing, not following some stupid trends . It's not that she's not beautiful, why did you make her up to look like some festival mask they sell on the street? You've seen me grow up and you know I hate these things the most . Are you trying to tell me not to be with her? Looking down on her standing because she has no family? I'm telling you, her background might be even more precious than me, so don't think just because she's young that she doesn't have any backing . You think this prince would pay so much attention to some common woman?" Rong Jian started to lecture her right then and there in front of the various servants of the w.a.n.gfu(1) .

Hearing his continuous stream of berating, Shen Tianyu turned her head to look over her shoulders and call out to him . "Hey! Are you coming or not? You can lecture her all you want in private once we get back . I don't want to be late on my first meeting with your family and give a bad impression . "

"Ah, I'm coming Tian'er, wait for me!" He yelled back at her . He turned to the old popo(2) . "I'll deal with you later, just come with us for now . " Without waiting for her reply, he turned on his heels and walked away, towards Shen Tianyu who was already halfway to the carriage .

The old woman and her helper straightened their backs and quickly walked after the two . In front of the gates of the w.a.n.gfu were actually two carriages . One was big and grandiose, with carvings of dragons amidst various flowers and silk ta.s.sels hanging from the roof . The door of the carriage was covered from view with a purple silk cloth as a drape, where many beasts were embroidered . The windows on the sides also had the same structure as the door, wooden windows with latches covered from view by silk drapes . Covering the silk drapes on the windows, though, were strings of beads to cover the face of the person inside even as they looked outside the windows . Attached to this carriage were two horses and a driver sitting in the seat in front of the carriage itself .

The second carriage was much smaller and inconspicuous, more like a palanquin with four walls since there were no wheels . There were no ornaments or designs, merely plain wood and nothing else, not even a drop of paint . Though the wood was smooth and it looked quite well-made . This one didn't have any horses but were instead surrounded by four burly men . Most likely, these were the ones that were going to carry the palanquin to the Palace .

Upon the two forms of transportation entering her eyesight, Shen Tianyu looked at Rong Jian . She didn't care about which one she rode, since she was never picky about those kinds of things . As long as they could move, she'd even ride a mule, clunky and inefficient as they were, if she needed to .

Seeing her look to him for guidance, Rong Jian felt a little proud but also a bit sad . 'Did she really think I'd ever tell her to ride the palanquin?' He guided her to the grand carriage, speaking . "We'll be riding this one, the palanquin behind us is for your maids . "

"Oh, then what about your servants?" Shen Tianyu followed him and asked .

"They'll double as guards, walking beside the carriage . "

Shen Tianyu uttered an "ok" since he wouldn't be able to see her nod her head when getting on the carriage . After he got on, he reached down to help her up the portable step and onto the carriage . Shen Tianyu also wasn't reserved as this was pretty much the first time she ever wore such a heavy and long dress . It was better to get help than to trip and fall onto the ground in a mess, and maybe accidentally flas.h.i.+ng your underwear . With some difficulty, she finally managed to get into the carriage with her dress intact, cursing in a low voice the whole time . Though her voice was low, the maids a.s.sisting her from the ground and Rong Jian heard it . The old woman frowned at her varied use of foul language while the younger maid kept shrinking her head into her shoulders . Maybe it was her fierceness or maybe it was because she felt guilty for putting the Miss in such a predicament in the first place, or perhaps both . As for the former, she probably didn't say anything because her Master had just lectured her because of this woman .
